Better option: buy the Valve Complete Pack.

But if that's out of the question, then absolutely. L4D2 is probably one of my top ten favorite games of all time just because it's so much fun, but it's also highly skill-based. You'll learn to listen for little audio cues to watch for threats, you'll learn to conserve ammo better, you'll learn to find shortcuts to cut off large areas of large zombies... I could go on and on, but you get the idea. L4D2's versus mode is perhaps one of the most fun multiplayer modes ever, but yes it helps if you have friends who play it on Steam, or at least get into a game where everyone uses a microphone.

I used to play the game at least three hours a day, and I still find myself having loads of fun when I go back to it... granted, I'm not nearly as good now as I was back then, but I'd be down to play if you pick it up. We had a 3v3 versus match going the other night made up only of MS.net players.

$10 for RIFT - this game is fun if you like MMOs. It's blatantly stolen many things from WoW and added a few regularly occurring world events to keep you on your toes

Lara Croft is brilliant at that price, especially if you find someone to co-op with. Think Diablo-lite, with guns, and platforming/physical puzzles.
Everyone should own Audiosurf, if only as a pretty music visualiser with a bit of game added in.
If you're gonna pick up Company of Heroes, definitely get the full 3-pack. They're all brilliant, and the expansions both add something different enough to the base campaign to make it worthwhile.
Don't buy Tiberian Twilight.
Sanctum is a pretty fun FPS/Tower Defence hybrid. Best played in co-op.

Good luck finding anything of mine right now, though. I haven't written for them in a while due to university commitments (like, y'know, not failing), and we lost everything pre-2010 thanks to the editor being about as technically adept as a chimp on LSD.
