They were near the mines now. The large stone mountains rose up in front of them, like a great wall of brown and grey teeth, waiting to devour them all whole. The sun was hidden behind the tallest peaks, draping the forest road in a cold twilight that coiled around the mob, slowly draining the life from their bodies as the silence suffocated them. Suddenly, there was a muffled crack off to the side, like a twig breaking. The captain whirled around to look, but it was already too late. The thing had already lunged at the group, pinning one of the volunteers down on the ground. It was human; or at least, once upon a time it had

been

human. Its skin was pale white and translucent, and most of its hair had fallen out. Thin scraps of leather, remnants of whatever clothing it had been wearing before it had turned, clung to its torso, obscuring its sex. With inhuman speed and strength, the fiend tore the man's head off, chucked it away, and lunged forward to attack the next nearest target.

The fiend's next target was a man wearing brown hooded robes. As it leaped towards him, the man, with a knowing smirk, pulled his arm out of his robes, and jabbed his palm forward at the airborne fiend. He was holding something small that glittered like metal in the torchlight, and as the fiend collided with it, the fiend collapsed to the ground, and gave off a bone-chilling shriek. The hooded man wasted no time, jumping on the fiend and pinning it down with his knees. He plunged the small metal object into the fiend's forehead, and a fine white smoke began to waft up as the fiend's shrieks of agony rose up in pitch. After a moment, the fiend stopped screaming, and went limp. The hooded man had killed it, but not before its death wails had attracted more of its kin.

Another fiend jumped out of the darkness, and the captain raised his sword, thinking it was coming after him. But the trajectory was all wrong, if it kept going the fiend would land off to his left... It was then that the captain realized who the real target was. One of his best men, the soldier he had had a farce duel with just hours ago, was facing the other way, peering into the darkness on the other side of the road. It was all happening so fast. The captain instinctively swung out at the inhuman monstrosity, and although the slash barely seemed to phase it, its momentum was enough to knock the fiend to the side, causing it to collide roughly with the soldier's shoulder, spinning him sideways and dropping him to his knee. Both the soldier and the fiend were up in a moment, but the soldier was ready for it this time, using his sword to block its advance.

"Here, use this!" The hooded man cried out, tossing the metallic object over the mob to the captain. He caught it, and examined it for a moment as it rested in the palm of his armoured leather glove. It was a small talisman of some sort, made of silver, and while the captain recognized it as a symbol he'd seen in the church once, he was not a religious man, and had no idea what it meant. Still, it was apparently an effective weapon against these things, and he needed all the help he could get. The soldier and the fiend were fighting at a phenomenally fast pace. The soldier's arms had bloody gashes in them from where the fiend had ripped his flesh away with its nails, and the fiend's hands were covered in its own blood, too, as the soldier's sword had cut into its palms, and managed to remove a finger or two. The captain had to move fast, before the two of them killed each other. The silver symbol had a small chain attached to it, and he quickly wrapped that around the knuckles of his left glove to keep it secure. He threw a punch at the fiend, but at that moment the soldier and fiend's fight caused the two of them to shift slightly, and the captain's punch hit nothing but air. At that point, the soldier's shoulder that had been hit by the fiend initially jarred, giving the fiend the opportunity it needed to shove the soldier's sword away and lunge straight for the neck. In a flash, the soldier's throat had been torn out, with his warm blood spewing forth onto the cold, damp forest road. The captain had had enough. With a roar of frustrated fury, he grabbed the hilt of his sword with two hands, and hefted it at the fiend. The fiend tried to dodge, but its arm was cleaved straight off by the captain's blow. It gave off a slight whimper before leaping back into the darkness of the forest. After that, the forest went deathly silent once more. It would appear they had won; but it had been a pyrrhic victory.
