what's the best format to play in order to try and break even/play for free?
Most Constructed formats will allow good players to freeroll.
Even the pros generally have a hard time making tix off Drafts.

I'm gonna play my Runechanter's Pike giving this creature plus five and - NOPE DESTROY ARTIFACT
I'm gonna miracle Terminus and - NOPE I STILL HAVE BULLSHIT TO PLAY
I'm gonna play my Tyrant of Discord (one turn later than I planned because he destroyed one of my lands) and destroy random shit - NOPE YOU HIT A LAND
then I lost right before I could miracle Blessing of Nature and play two Joint Assaults on my 7/7, which would have dealt 15 damage and won me the game

FLYYYYYYYYING WEREWOLVESSSSSS
also i had like 7 lands and one creature of course you were going to hit a land
Pie, protip, you can easily deal with that deck through 4 Mana Leak, or by not going all-in on so much. If you put all your eggs on the Pike, then you're asking to be killed because of it.
Cracked an AVR Fat Pack today: 2 Demonlord of Ashmouth, Malignus, Champion of Lambholt (STEVE HOLT!), Reforge the Soul, Tyrant of Discord, Vexing Devil, Tibalt the Fiend-Blooded, and a Temporal Mastery. I'm pretty okay with this.
thoughts on this deck? I think the blue miracle finds a nice home here.
Both you and the article say that combo in legacy is meh right now, but every place I look I see Tendrils, Dredge, and Sneak Attack as Tier 1.
PEDIT: Looked through SCGs recent invitational results and have come to the conclusion that the reason those keep popping up is because it woudln't be very much fun to have the only decks listed be "Delver Tempo" and "Delver Aggro".
As far as Dream Halls is concerned, I had fun playing that deck before the blue miracle and it's just gonna be stronger and more fun with it. Do I think that makes it the best combo deck in the format? No, but that is probably irrelevant until something can win a tournament beside Delver+Countermagic.
Patting myself on the back to say that I called the Blue Miracle finding a home in legacy next to a playset of brainstorm.
Tendrils and dredge are not tier one. Sneak attack really isnt even that close to tier one, imo...
Tier one is pretty much the three he mentioned, esper blade, RUG and Maverick.
Obviously other decks come out of nowhere and steal a tournament where sideboards are not designed for them (dredge is particularly good at doing this) but over all, the legacy meta is as constricted as I think I have ever seen it. That's a pretty big shame, imo.
Oh um... so I signed up for my LGS's Avacyn Restored league. I opened Cavern of Souls, foil Terminus, and a Griselbrand in my packs. There is a slight problem, though -- I have pretty much exactly the same amount of each color, and only a handful of creatures in each color. Meaning I might just have to suck it up and go FIVE COLOR CONTROLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!
Im in my league too. You should be playing with the special rules, which will let you abuse your deck for the first week. The first weeks special rule is starting with a basic land in play. To abuse this, you can go 3 color, make sure one of your colors is all spells that only cost 1 of it, and only put the 1 land for it in your deck, always searching it out. It will let you run a 3 color deck but effectviely having a 2 color manabase. Hopefuly this makes things easier on your pool because of its even spread. You will need to change for week 2, but you'll have another pack then.

Played my first match yesterday against Pie and won 2-0. Decided to go for a red/white/black deck, heavily focused on my red vampires, black sorceries, and white fliers. Seemed to work pretty well.
Yeah you probably should of built for playing without the week rules, and then built for the week 2 rules once it was established you were using the rules.

Gonna dick around on MWS and see if I can get some worthwhile games with that Dream Halls list.
Edit: Played my first game with Dream Halls against Combo Elves. I think the other guy was bad, but I won both games without ever seeing Dream Halls. Didn't realize Show and Tell Progenitus beat elves...
