Oh, and to anyone who doesn't use OptiFine: you should. Even if your computer is more than capable of handling vanilla, optifine gives you a ton of options to make minecraft look much better (mipmaps, in particular), utilises multi-core processors properly, and will let you use much higher quality textures. My laptop used to crash at 64x, but with OptiFine it can handle 256x with mostly fancy graphics settings. Get it today for the low, low price of $0.00!

It basically smooths the textures that render further from the camera. The further away, the more they're smoothed. It means mountains and stuff don't look all grainy, and it stops the lava oceans in the nether from torturing my eyes.

Also, OptiFine has a cool zoom feature.
