General Rules:

For you Munchkins out there:

Rules are subject to addition, deletion, or change any time. If you try to abuse some technicality, I will make that technicality cease to exist and retroactively punish if needed. There are several common sense rules that are implicitly here that I didn't bother writing. When in doubt, PM the mod. But remember, directly quoting PM's from the mod (including the role PM, any flavor or pictures from a PM, a rules adjucation quoted verbatim, etc) or impersonating the mod in game (by pretending I have "edited" a post I have not) is

strictly forbidden

. Paraphrasing is fine, as long as there's room for doubt. Again, common sense.

Play to your win condition:

I want you all to have fun, but you must always be trying to secure a win for your faction. Failure to do so might get you banned from all mafia games on-site, not just this one. Getting modkilled will turn you to a dead neutral survivor, so incurring a modkill is

always

playing against your factions wincon. Do not test my patience on this issue; I have none.

Roll with the punches, but don't be a shitlord

: This is a game where some people want you dead, and there's a certain degree of hostility inherent in the premise. “Attack the case, not the player” is a good guideline, but the line is thin and I'm not interested in playing baby-sitter.

However, there are certain boundaries you must respect. My general anti-harassment rule can be roughly stated as, “If it'd be illegal to fire someone for, it's forbidden to insult someone for.” To be more specific, insulting someone based on (or simply an insult including reference to) culture, gender, sexual orientation, income, or similar non-mafia related things is expressly prohibited, with punishments up to and including forced replacements/modkills on the FIRST OFFENSE. You guys probably know I'm pretty easy-going, and you probably don't know how absolutely small my tolerance is for this sort of behavior. This is me warning you.

Lynching:

It takes a full majority to lynch or to no-lynch. If there is no one with a majority at deadline, it's no-lynch. No lynch is a valid vote target, but does not take any fewer votes to achieve than a normal lynch.

First rule about ongoing games:

Don't talk about this game anywhere else, and don't talk about other ongoing games here. ESPECIALLY don't share QT links with anyone. Yes, talking about "[redacted]" is still talking about ongoing games.

Mistakes:

Everybody makes them. Call out vote count mistakes with a bolded note in thread. All other mistakes should be pointed out discreetly via PM.

Activity:

I will prod a player after 48 hours of inactivity. Prods can only be 'picked up' by actually posting in thread – a response to me will not cut it. Players will be replaced upon receiving their third prod, or if they take more than 48 hours to respond to a prod. (However, one prod on your record is removed for each full game Day you participate in.) Players are also free to request replacement at any time. I will not count Saturday hours for activity.

V/LA

: Declaring V/LA (Vacation/Limited Access) freezes your activity clock. It starts ticking on midnight the day AFTER the end date you've given.

Kills:

I will accept kills that are either bolded in the scum QT, or sent via PM. If I receive multiple kill orders, I will use the most recent one. You can only submit a kill order you yourself are carrying out. If I receive no kill orders all night, no kill will happen.

Deadlines:

Deadlines will be three weeks for the first Session, and two weeks for all subsequent Sessions. I will extend this only in extreme circumstances. Recesses will be 72 hours from when the lynch scene is posted.

Votes:

Votes must be bold, and be on the start of a new line. A vote inside a paragraph almost certainly won't count (unless I think you're deliberately abusing this policy – you should never PURPOSEFULLY place your vote in a paragraph). Unvotes are nice but not necessary. Don't play 'vote tricks' – whether you voted for someone or not is ultimately for me to decide, not you.

If the Mod said you're alive, you're alive:

I will not end the day if the number of votes stated in the last VC + the number of additional votes is not great enough to lynch - I won't penalize the town for a mod error.

To put this otherwise, if I make a mistake in the vote-count, point it out immediately, but UNTIL I fix it, someone will only be lynched if BOTH the actual vote total AND the vote counts agree they should be lynched. This ensures that someone doesn't get accidentally hammered because of bad mod information.

: No bah. When you die, you're dead, and dead dudes can't post. There will be a fun dead QT though. (Yes, I know I'm a hypocrite who loves bah posts himself but doesn't allow them. This is because I can trust myself and I can't trust you kids.¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )

Abarat: Days of Magic, Nights of War Mafia Rules:

Matias is my backup mod. Note that he is not a co-mod, so you don't need to do stuff like cc-ing him into every pm you send. I can run Abarat alone provided I'm here. Contact Matias only if an issue is hanging for more than 48 hours (a requested VC, a PM, etc.) or if I have a planned absence where I specifically announce to send things to Matias.

This game is a battle between 18 members of

Commexo

. There are no Jesters, Lynchers, Cultists, or Survivors. No player (except a modkilled one) will have their win condition change from what it was at the start of the game.

This game will involve a Council of the Mind attempting to find the members of Night and Commexo. As such, the game will be divided between Sessions of the Council of the Mind, and Recesses. These will function as "Day" and "Night" respectively.

This game has five classes of abilities - Active, Passive, Factional, Informational and Transcendent. There is a limit of one Active -or- Factional ability per Recess - however, something that affects Active abilties does

not

affect Factional abilities unless explicitly stated. Passive abilities are always in effect. Informational abilities are simply privileged information about the setup. Transcendent abilities are immune to all other actions and things that affect actions, and do not count towards any cap - if a Transcendent ability includes a component that must resolve in Action Resolution, it will resolve before any other abilities.

You know that at least one element of the game depends on who "killed" the target. The killer of a player is either the person who used a killing ability on them, or the person who cast the final vote on them. In the event that neither of these players is alive, the last living person to vote for the target is considered the "killer". In the unlikely case that none of these players exist or are alive, the "killer" will be randomly chosen and informed as such.

Flips are guaranteed to be true but not guaranteed to be definitive. Suppose kiwieagle is an Informed Bulletproof Watcher Roleblocker. "Citizen" or "Goon" are invalid flips that NO role power will make happen. However, "Bulletproof Watcher Roleblocker", "Watcher Roleblocker", "Fantomaya Sisterhood" (with no explanation as to what that means) or "ability unknown" are all potentially valid flips.

I publicly announce the following condition at the start of each Session for each faction it's true for:

[Faction]'s victory is imminent

: There is at least one living player who, if lynched this Session, would cause [Faction] to win without needing to have Recess options submitted. This is true even if a Recess is required - eg, if scum must kill a player after mislynching, but there's no "wrong" choice. It is

not

true if a Recess may or may not end the game (eg, if Night wins killing the Commexo aligned player, but not a Day aligned player)

Role PM's are Abarat flavored. I have tried to make them fit thematically with the story – but note that I reserve the right to interpret the story differently / make some roles not align with the story if I believe doing so is crucial to the game balance. Also, while most of the flavor is from the second book, I may use flavor, characters, etc that are found only in the first book as well.

There are at least 5 fakeclaims for Night, and at least 1 for Commexo. These fakeclaims are full PMs and include all of the trappings of regular PMs (flavor, a picture if appropriate, etc.). They may either be vanilla town pm's, or pm's with a given power.

Some role PM's have pictures. I have used this process: I went to this website and searched the name of the character. If they had a picture, I used it. If they did not, no picture is included. Again, the pictures or lack thereof are not a scumhunting tool, since the fakeclaims get them if applicable.

Finally, remember that theme games are the spot for two things: games given the flavor of some non-mafia thing, or games with severe mechanics changes. The fact that I am obviously embracing the first does not necessarily preclude me from indulging in the second.

Some months previous. Scoriae, the Island of Lengthing Shadows, 7pm.

The ship moored itself on the dusky coastline of Scoriae. It was a dark thing, almost impossible to see, like a congealed ball of shadow.

A pair of masked figures crept off the ship and began walking along the decorated stone path. There was something distinctly

dark

about the way they carried themselves; midnight men from a midnight ship. They had no business being at the Twilight Palace of Scoriae. Well, no one did, these days - King Claus was nowhere to be found - but even when the palace had been full and bustling, it's unlikely the king would have courted such as these. But now, the palace was abandoned, and there was no one to stop the intruders from simply walking in to the front door.

For weeks, a masked messenger from Odom's Spire had been tentatively putting in requests to various printers for some orders. The midnight men didn't know the contents of these messages, but the fact that the Spire wanted it published was enough that that had taken to visiting these printers afterwards and explaining, in exacting detail, exactly what would happen to someone who dared to publish those documents. When the Spire's messenger had come here, they had assumed it to be a feint, at first. But looking in to the history of King Claus, they had learned he was a patron of the arts - going as far as to have a printing press installed in his own palace.

The midnight men slinked in to the palace. There was music coming from someone inside. While they were both wearing masks, they nonetheless stared at each other and seemed to reach some sort of understanding. Kill the musician first, then find the press.

They followed the low, mournful song until they found the musician. His eyes were closed as he played. One of the figures drew a knife and walked slowly, unconsciously keeping time with the music as he crept over. One of the snaking tendrils of matter that seemed to grow out of the musicians back touched the man, and the musicians eyes flew open. He leapt forward and stabbed. The entire blade of the knife was buried in the musicians heart.

He didn't say a last word. He just played one last bit of music. This wasn't a lament, like before. It was oddly defiant. And as the sound stopped and his body crumbled to the floor, the killers hand shook nervously. Too much hope in that song for him to be happy.

His partner gestured towards the staff in front of the now-empty chair. Instead of sheet music, there was a book. With gloved hands, the assassin picked it up and looked at the first page.

"I come from a future where Night defeated day. A future without balance.

I entrust to Day the responsibility of maintaining itself against the forces that would consume it. Not to destroy Night, but to drive it back, to endure.

The book begins with predictions of what will come to pass, and cannot be avoided. This is so you know I speak truth.

The book ends with a retelling of what came to pass, and must be avoided. This is so you know your duty.

The truths of a tomorrow avoided are the weapons of today. To all of the Abarat, I give these weapons."

Even in the Abarat, where every island kept to it's own Hour, it was still possible to arrive late.

They felt it first as a sort of exhaustion. Heavy limbs and weary eyes. One by one, they found somewhere comfortable to lay down.

But they didn't dream normal dreams. There was none of the usual fogginess of the mind that dreamers generally faced. They were...well, wide awake, even though they were asleep. Deep in their consciousness, they realized why they were here. The Codex has warned them, after all. The Council of the Mind would be called, and...how had it gone, again? "Sons and Daughters of Day, you will not be forced to attend the summons, but if you hold any love for the waking time, you are obligated. The enemy will be there - it cannot be prevented. You must outnumber them."

Here they were, a buzzing throng of minds, dimly aware of one another. And aware most of all of

her.

Everyone else had a dull sameness to them, but they could feel the strange cast of her mind. Her...and her? For they were, by some bizarre arts,

two thoughts in one

, speaking as separate beings but acting as a whole.

"We are all assembled." The words sang like a crystal chime, bouncing in their skull without ever passing through their ears. "The Council will begin. Justice must be served, and for that, anonymity is required." It paused. "When possible. We are the Moderator. We will ensure fairness."

Then, suddenly, there was a terrible

stretching.

The whole construct seemed to be thinner, somehow. Ethereal. For a moment, it seemed as though it would pull itself apart....and then, without fanfare, it was back to normal.

"The Council of the Mind is a new thing, still burning in the fires of it's creation. It is weak." The Moderators voice was mechanical and dispassionite, but there was still the faintest suggestion of fear in it's voice. "Caution should be exercised.

The Council of the Mind is now in session."

The First Session of the Council of the Mind has begun.

You know this to be the PM received by the Two-In-One:

"They carried the soul of the Princess across the Izabella to the shores of the Hereafter. There was a terrible storm that night—which I suppose is only right and proper, given that such a massive crime against nature had been committed. The women’s little boat was almost sunk. But they somehow got across to the other side. And do you know who they found when they got there?"

Candy already knew the answer. Knew it in her heart.

"My mother," she said.

"Yes," said Wolfswinkel. "Your mother: Melissa Quackenbush. She’d been sitting in a truck on an empty road. And of course she was very, very close to giving birth …"

"… to me."

"Yes indeed. It was quite a night. And of course the women of the Fantomaya assumed that all this was in the stars. It was meant to be this way, that they’d come ashore and find your mother sitting there in a broken-down vehicle."

"So what did they do?"

"What do you think?" Wolfswinkel said. "They gave Boa’s soul to your mother for safekeeping so you and she would be brought up together."

"But I don’t have a sister."

"She isn’t your sister, Candy. Her soul is inside you. Sharing the same body."

. One of you is a girl from the Hereafter, and the other is a Princess, but you must work together in this Council of the Mind if you want Day to have a chance. Luckily, the strange nature of your mind is immediately obvious in the Council of the Mind – no one else has two thoughts in one.

Transcendent Ability: The Two In One

And there was Mater Motley, coming down the stairs to join them in her gown of the damned. Though Candy was scarcely happy to see the woman, the Hag’s presence here was perfectly right and proper. Here they were, the four of them together for the first time. On one side, the Lord of Midnight and his grandmother. And on the other, the girl from the Hereafter with her Princess, joined in a single body:

the Two in One.

Your role PM, including the fact that you are the recipients, will be posted in the thread at the start of the First Session. You two may talk freely at any time in The Mind Chamber. You share a common vote – the most recent vote from either of you will override any previous one. You are lovers – when either one of you dies, the other will immediately die as well.

You also know that you have a guardian angel, although you don't know who. There exists in this game exactly one role aligned with Day that may, at least once, choose any target they like and prevent factional abilities from working on them. You do not know the exact details of this ability. There may be other roles that prevent factional abilities from working by other means.

The Council of the Mind is a new and weak thing. So, for the first session only, it is important not to post too much or your presence may distort the Council. Every day, roughly around 8pm, there will be a "Replenishment Votecount." Posting too often between Replenishment Votecounts will cause difficulities as you strain the matter of the Council:

If a player posts more than five times between Replenishment votecounts, they will have a "phantom vote" on them which does not increase threshold but will remain for the rest of the session. (This can happen multiple times, but only once per Replenishment votecount.)
If they post more than seven times between replenishment votecounts, they will be roleblocked during this Recess, prevented from using Active abilities (but not Factional).
If they post more than nine times between replenishment votecounts, they will be killed and the day will end.

The first Replenishment Votecount will be in roughly two hours, so you may post five times between now and then without repercussion. Fate and Regfan have separate post counts but do face the same penalties.

Forgot to mention: if you are in a hydra/alt and accidentally post outside of your account, you are REQUIRED to quote it with your hydra account. You must quote each post made with the wrong account in a separate post with the hydra. However, this will only count as one post each, not two. I'll count it as a post as soon as you post with the wrong account, not right when you quote, so there's absolutely no benefit to tactically posting on the wrong account - if you post 9 times on your hydra and once on your main, I'll kill you immediately without waiting for the quote. But if you screw up, you're not penalized for doing due diligence.

As a note, this will only be in effect for the first Session. After that, the Council will be at full strength and the global post restriction will be no more.

Several customers, many in states of inebriation as bad or worse than his own, were standing in a rough circle, pointing to something on the ground in their midst.

The Criss-Cross Man went to see. There in the dirt was one of the uglier occupants of Gorgossium: a large zethek. He had apparently collided with a tree and had fallen to earth, under which he was now standing, looking very confused, picking leaves out of his hair and spitting out dirt. The drunkards just kept laughing at him.

"Go on,

laugh at me!

" the creature said. "Kud seen a thing you be way afraid of. A terrible thing I seen."

"Oh yeah?" said one of the drunks. "And what was that?"

The more of the melody she heard, the more bittersweet it seemed to be. It was the kind of song her grandfather (her mom’s dad, Grandpa O’Donnell) used to sing when she was little. Laments, he called them.

"What’s a lament?" she had asked him one day.

"A song about the sad things in the world," he’d told her, his voice tinged with a little of his Irish roots. "Lovers parted, and ships lost at sea, and the world full of loneliness from one end to the other."

"Why’d you want to sing about sad things?" Candy had asked him.

"Because any fool can be happy," he’d said to her. "It takes a man with real heart" - he’d made a fist and laid it against his chest - "to make beauty out of the stuff that makes us weep."

Grandpappy O’Donnell had cupped her face in his big, scarred hands. He’d worked on the railroad most of his life, and every scar had a story. By chance Otto Houlihan was on Gorgossium at that time, waiting for an audience with the Lord of Midnight. It was not an appetizing prospect. He was going to have to report that though he came very close to capturing the girl in Hap’s Vault he had failed, and that she and her geshrat companion had most likely thrown themselves to their deaths. The news would not make Carrion happy, he knew. This made Houlihan nervous. He remembered all too well the feeding of the nightmares he’d witnessed in the Twelfth Tower. He didn’t want to die the same way as the wretched miner had died. In an attempt to put these troubling thoughts from his mind, he slipped away to a little inn called The Fool in Chains where he could drink some Hobarookian vodka. Perhaps it was time - he thought as he drank - to cease his life as a hunter and find a less risky means of making money. As a bug-wrestling promoter, perhaps; or a knife juggler. Anything, as long as he never had to come back to Gorgossium and

Beneath them, the landscape was little more than a wilderness of reddish dirt dotted with a few solitary trees, all spindly and undernourished, which threw their long shadows eastward. Now and again she saw a farmhouse, with a couple of cultivated fields beside it, and cattle settling down after their evening milking. Though of course it was always dusk here, wasn’t it? The evening stars were always rising in the east; the flowers opening to meet the moon. It would be a very pleasant Hour to live in, with the day almost ending but the night not yet begun. It had been different, she thought, in the Carnival. There the lights had lent the sky a false brightness, and the din had driven out the aching hush that was all around her now. Perhaps that was why Six O’clock had been chosen as a place to put the razzmatology of the Carnival: it was a kind of defense against the darkening Hour, a way of delaying the darkness with laughter and games. But it couldn’t be put off forever. The farther north they traveled, the longer the shadows became, and the red of the earth darkened to purple and to black as the light steadily faded from the sky.

Overhead, the cloud of bats continued to swell, as events on the bridge disturbed more and more of them. A few of the largest, intending perhaps to drive out these trespassers, swooped down on Candy and Malingo, letting out shrill shrieks. Candy did her best to ignore them: she was much more concerned with the Criss-Cross Man, who was now no more than seven or eight feet away.

"You’re coming with me, girl," he said to her. "Carrion wants to see you in Gorgossium."

He suddenly tossed the torch over the railing, and with both hands free he raced at Candy. She had nowhere left to run. "What now?" he said.

She shrugged. Desperate, she looked around at Malingo. "We may as well see-"

"What is there to see?" he replied.

She smiled, the tiniest smile, and then, without even glancing up at their pursuers again, they both threw themselves headfirst over the rope railing.

Rumors had been spreading through town, whispers and warnings that Chickentown was in the most terrible danger. Nobody, except the stone deaf, had been untouched by this talk. Schoolchildren had passed the rumors back and forth as they played; dog walkers had chatted lightly about it when they stopped to let their charges say hello to one another’s bottoms; patients sitting in dentists’ waiting rooms had turned the conversation to something worse than the subject of the drill, just for comfort’s sake.

In the aisles of supermarkets, on the corners of streets, in the chicken factory, where there had been a record-breaking slaughter the previous day, even in the less friendly parts of town, where folks lingered suspiciously in doorways and there wasn’t a lot of casual chat, people talked today; talked in ways they had perhaps never talked in their lives, nor ever would again. Talked of things they’d dreamed in recent nights, things that overshadowed every hope of tomorrow, or the day after tomorrow. Things that made them think that perhaps they should put off whatever they were going to do with the rest of the day—however pressing it had once seemed to be—and leave town for a little while.

And the more the whispers were repeated, the more plausible they began to sound. Folks began to make plans. It was time to stop worrying about what the neighbors might say (let them seek their own salvation) and simply pack a small suitcase, gather up the family and pets and carry them off to some safe place.

The Council of the Mind warped and twisted. At times, you thought it might crack.

Certain minds grew distant and strained, at times threatening to be overwhelmed entirely. Others, perhaps worried of this outcome, kept to themselves. How were you supposed to figure anything out when the sickle of death loomed so ominously above you?

But, in fits and starts, the Council advanced. Finding minds, and hesitating, and then finding others - but then, all at once, a verdict was reached.

The forces of all of those minds working in unison - not just the Two-In-One, but

Thirteen-In-One

- was enough to expel the other out. But explusion from this Council was not simply being thrown out the door. To be lost here is to lose your mind forever, consigning the body to a slow, biological decay. Voting to remove a soul from a body - it was a terrible responsibility, but one that needed to be undertaken.

As the offending mind began to - there was no word for this in any language, but

be unmade

was a start - it's aspect slowly made itself known. It was a large, monstrous mind. A worm.

You could feel the thought of it snapping it's jaws, as though it could cleave your dreamflesh in two. But of course, no such thing was possible. Instead, it only howled pitiously as its soul dwindled away.

"Nythaganius Pejorius is no more." The image of the Council began to fade, and sleep, true sleep, overcame the others. "The energy of its life should sustain the Council for future Sessions."

The last thought most of them had was, "At least that dragon won't catch me sleeping."

The Roleblock action was a standard one that worked on both Active and Factional abiltiies. The effects of being a Dragon are unknown.

A murmur danced around the assembled minds.

In the center of the Council - well, the whole thing was too metaphysical to have spatial qualities, really, but center-ish - there was a bubble of vision, as though the air had thickened and congealed into a fortune-tellers ball. There was the sight of a woman. She had strong, muscular arms, and was essentially bald. "Galatea has left us."

Another vision. A young boy, face twisted into a rictus of pain. His body had a strange, unhuman hue, and there were hints of scales on his face. "As has Letheo."

Another. A strange, huddled up creature. It's small. Pitifully small. "As has Filth.

But we have not only lost. We have also gained. Our...construct has connected with another. I speak of the Dreaming Street. This is a highly unusual method of ingress, but we can send one consciousness there, barely. Their dreams will be examined.

Examined, and removed. Think carefully.

To be clear, only one player may be sent to Marapozsa Street. It is the first one to obtain a majority by normal voting rules. If either condition for a lynch triggers before someone is Sent, the chance to use Marapozsa Street is lost.

But she had nowhere to run to. There was a zethek to the left of her and one to the right, and behind her a solid wall. A skeletal smile spread over Kud’s face.

"Any last words?" he said as he lifted the hammer above his head.

"Come on," he growled. “You must have something in your head."

Curiously, she did have something in her head: a word she could not even remember hearing until this moment. Kud seemed to see the confusion in her eyes.

"Speak!" he said, striking the wall to the left of her head with the hammer. The reverberations echoed all around the hold. The dead smatterlings convulsed, as though they’d been given a spasm of life. "Talk to me!" Kud said, striking the wall to the right of Candy’s head. Showers of sparks erupted from the spot, and the fish jumped a second time.

Candy put her hand up to her throat. There was a word there. She could feel it, like something she’d eaten but not quite swallowed. It wanted to be spoken. That she was certain about. It wanted to be spoken.

And who was she to deny it its ambitions? She let the syllables rise up, unbidden. And spoke them.

Attending the Council is like sleeping. Your body lays unmoving, waiting for your return, while the mind projects. No one could move their body while their mind was away.

At least, no one can move their own body. But the body of Otto Houlihan was moving all the same.

It was the cause of the dread weapon in his hands - the Star-Striker. It possesed his body, moving him step by step, while his mind continued in the Council as though everything was fine. Tracing the thread of being from the Council of the Mind to the physical world, Houlihan found his target at last.

The Star-Striker shook in his hands. It wanted blood.

Houlihan gave in.

The strike was swift and brutal. Perhaps if she had been alive, she could have resisted. But her mind - her

minds

- knew nothing of this assault. They occupied the Council, and then, all at once, they didn't.

Houlihan smirked with a job well done. But only for a moment. Because the terrible, hateful tremor in his hand made it all too clear that the Star-Striker

wasn't done.

The girl had picked a safe place to hide. No one heard his scream.

You suspected it long before you could put a name to it. One of the minds wasn't right.

As the Session grew longer, people voiced their mutual suspicion and what individuals had put down to flights of fancy was openly discussed. Yes, there was something off, wasn't there? Some sort of strange longing. Some sort of

want.

The pressure came and went in fits and starts, but slowly, steadily grew over time. The feeling only grew stronger, and the minds of the Council could almost hear it speak, as though this desire was its own creature.

Eventually, a majority was reached. As the unmaking began and the mind lost it's restraints, the whisper grew to a scream -

The overwhelming craving overcame the whole Council. Even as the unmaking finished and the creature was nothing but a memory, everyone could feel the terrible pangs.

As the wave beneath Carrion’s ship continued to grow, the power that was creating it summoned up from the depths great multitudes of fish, many of which were not designed ever to meet the light. Some blew up like balloons as soon as they surfaced, then exploded. Others, conversely, met the light in a state of writhing pleasure, as though they were in ecstasy to have themselves finally revealed in every repugnant detail. And repugnant they were, many of them, their flesh bloated and gray-green, their eyes ghastly lanterns; their mouths gaping and lined with needle barbs. Some were so far from being recognizable creatures that they lacked eyes and mouths but were just writhing shreds of life, roiling in the tumult like the skins of damned souls.

And all this was just in the froth of that frenzied sea. Beneath the bubbling surf was a massive body of dark, glistening water, which lifted the immense bulk of the Wormwood. First the stern, then the shuddering mass of the ship itself, which threw its shadow down on the Lud Limbo.

Candy grabbed hold of the railing to keep herself from falling.

As she did so, she heard a noise behind her. A kind of chanted music was coming out of the Wormwood, its source, to judge by its shrillness, the women of Mater Motley’s sewing circle. The sound they made was complex and strangely distressing. It made her stomach churn. It made the Izabella churn too. As the rhythm of the chant quickened, the sea became more frenzied, surging even higher beneath the Wormwood as though it were a watery mountain that was being summoned in a great spiral motion from the depths. As below, so above. The same chant that raised the waters brought down a spiraling cloud of slate and lightning, which took as its focus the main mast of the Wormwood. Now everything was in motion, except the great warship itself, which by some tremendous force of its own audacious will held steady while the sea and sky described vast, implacable motions around it.

In the half minute or so that Candy had been meeting Carrion’s stare, a great swell of water had appeared from beneath the Wormwood, lifting her up on its foamy back.

"We’re in trouble," Captain McBean said grimly.

The wave was growing in size and speed by the moment. Clearly it would soon possess staggering power, not only to carry the monstrous vessel forward, but to destroy anything that lay in the wave’s path.

"I didn’t realize Carrion had elemental powers," John Mischief yelled as he watched the Izabella become more and more frenzied.

"I don’t think it’s him," said Finnegan, clinging to the rigging of the Lud Limbo with one hand and watching the warship through a telescope, which he held in the other. "It’s his grandmother! Mater Motley."

He had no sooner uttered the witch’s name than there was a surge of blistering energy that rose up out of the bowels of the Wormwood, and the woman who had unleashed the Izabella rose into view. Her stick-thin arms were raised, and her gray hair swirled around her head.

As she appeared, everybody on board the Lud Limbo heard her voice, and for every person it was as though she were speaking to them and them alone. Her message was grim and simple:

The Lud Limbo is about to sink. When it goes down, you will all drown. Make your peace with death. And be quick about it.

As she finished her speech, the boiling body of water beneath the warship suddenly rose up like a tower of water.

"DROWN THEM!" the old woman yelled.

You could feel the thinness of it towards the end, like being on a mountaintop and fighting for every breath. It was something like the strain of the First Session...but even as you said it, you didn't believe it. That was an infant rejecting elements that were too much for it. This was just too many people wanting too little air.

You didn't have physical bodies here, but nontheless, you could swear that the the metalltic tang of blood was always lingering on your tongue. You knew what it meant - could feel it with every fiber of your being, even if the Moderator hadn't told you. The Council was

alive

, in some way, and it wanted blood.

But who to feed to it? You knew too well the consequence of getting it wrong. One pure soul would be insufficient nutrition.

The Council lingered on as the matter was discussed, and the longer it delayed the more lightheaded you felt. Finally, the victim was chosen.

Silence. A last, desperate gasp, minds reaching out for sustenance that

wasn't there

There was a sharp cracking sound. The nightmares inside Carrion’s collar—too big to be contained any longer—were fracturing the glass. The dark fluid in which they’d swum ran hissing down over the Prince of Midnight’s robes. A flicker of concern came onto Carrion’s face as he realized that his beloved nightmares were about to break out. Then he seemed to change his mind. For an instant something resembling a smile flitted across his lipless mouth. Then the fracture in the collar gaped, and the fluids gushed out, hitting the boards at his feet with a wet slap. For the first time Candy saw Carrion’s nightmares in all their lurid glory: they hung around his neck with their pallid, twitching lengths knotted and intertwined.

But they didn’t hang there for very long. No sooner had the collar emptied of fluid than they began to swell again, seeming almost to turn themselves inside out in their eagerness to be greater than themselves, skin following skin following skin, mottled one moment, scarlet the next; white speckled with yellow the next. They had eyes, she saw. Clusters of long eyes, like the petals of shiny black flowers, and around the eyes there were trails of eggs, which were even now beginning their own horrific life cycle. They shook themselves free of the parent creature and went into freefall, but had only dropped a foot or so before they sent out a little hook which caught somewhere in the fabric of the robes. There the next generation rapidly swelled up and fattened, so that the Prince of Midnight became a kind of grotesque nursery, alive with all manner of mewling, spittling things; some made in an instant into the very image of venom and sudden death, others still sickly in their infant state.

You're adjusted to the Council in more ways than one. Not only are you becoming quicker to align yourself with it every Session, you're growing quicker to unmake. Or maybe it's simply the lower numbers. Whatever the reason, the Council was barely in session before a lynch was declared.

The fires of unmaking burned, as normal - and then, suddenly, there was a strange warping that seemed to overcome you. It was as though your stomach had been turned inside out- if you had a stomach, anyway. This was a new feeling.

And suddenly you realized - you had never unmade someone who was on your side before...

The first death hardly affected you.

Of course, it's always sad to come to the Council missing another mind. But this mind belonged to Diamanda, last sister of the Fantomaya. There were three of them, and now, the last living one joins her sisters. Surely there is some sort of order in that.

But you can feel her power absent, now - a light backround hum you didn't notice until it was gone. She had more strength in her than her sisters in this venue.

Still, it's right and proper that the Fantomaya is once again whole.

The other death, though...

Her link to the Abarat was tenuous. She visited only in her dreams. No alignment with this side or that side - only with keeping her daughter safe. And instead, she got to feel her daughter die long before she could join her.

How did they even get to Chickentown, where Melissa Quackenbush's body was? Did they call the sea? Or did they not even kill her body and instead just destroy her mind?

Someone from the Hereafter, killed over the affairs of the Abarat. The Council of the Mind has higher stakes than ever.

About ten days after they’d left Tazmagor, their travels brought them to the island of Orlando’s Cap. It was little more than a bare rock with an asylum for the insane built on its highest point. The asylum had been vacated many years before, but its interior bore the unmistakable signs of the madness of its occupants. The white walls were covered with strange scrawlings that here and there became a recognizable image—a lizard, a bird—only to dwindle into scrawlings again.

He was standing in the bow of the Wormwood, his hands behind his back but spread wide, gripping his winged-toad staff. The distance between the Wormwood and the boat containing his prey was getting bigger by the moment, but he wasn’t concerned. The Wormwood had immense speed: a crew of giants in the hold, working their oars, and on deck Mater Motley and her witch-women seamstresses, whose power over the elements allowed them to bend the Izabella to their will. His grandmother and her terrifying entourage could raise tempests and water spouts; they could call up out of the deeps the ghosts of men drowned over the millennia: fishermen, pirates, admirals and cabin boys. And of course the monstrous creatures that made meals of the dead could also be raised up: species that made vile schools which had appeared so far like inconsequential things. The giant black-backed scorpion crabs that could cut a man in half with their claws; the tiny scalpel fish, who had been known to perform entire surgeries on drowning men, operations so immaculate that their bodies had been retrieved and studied by the doctors in Commexo City; furnace fish, which by some unknown means kept fires stoked in their five stomachs, where they cooked their catch before devouring it in the normal way through a sixth stomach.

This Session was one of the longest. Maybe it was fatigue. Maybe your minds just needed a break from the parade of killing. It certaintly wasn't a case of too many voices delaying the procedure - minds are getting a bit thin on the ground, these days. Well, not the ground. It's harder to remember that, now. Like it or not, the Council of the Mind is beginning to feeling more and more like the only reality. More than once you catch yourself forgetting you have a body somewhere, waiting. You hope the neglect isn't causing too much harm.

And then the Moderator announces the new death - another citizen, another poor citizen who didn't know anything and couldn't do anything - and to your surprise and disgust you can't find the energy to grieve. Too long. Much too long.

You're back. Did you leave? Things are beginning to get muddled and linked. The gaps between your experience are starting to get harder to notice. Who's to say you haven't spent your whole life here in this Council?

If you strain, you can just remember the waking world. The sun on your face and the smell of the ocean. But living in it...you can't stop the feeling of dread. Living in a cage made of flesh? A giant, unwieldly vessel for your soul? How did you ever think that was okay? That it was

good?

How can you ever go back?

You try to convince yourself that as soon as you're in your body, you won't notice. That it will be like it's always been. But you can't make yourself believe it.

I will officially confirm that imminent victory, as defined in the rules here:

[Faction]'s victory is imminent: There is at least one living player who, if lynched this Session, would cause [Faction] to win without needing to have Recess options submitted. This is true even if a Recess is required - eg, if scum must kill a player after mislynching, but there's no "wrong" choice. It is not true if a Recess may or may not end the game (eg, if Night wins killing the Commexo aligned player, but not a Day aligned player)

is not true for any of the three factions this Session.

Rojo Pixler died in his sleep.

That was how it looked on the other end, when someone was unmade. Someone would be lying there peacefully, and then one morning you'd be unable to rouse them. There was no real external sign, unless you were examaining their heartbeat, which of course Dr. Voorzangler was.

It was not a gradual winding down. His heart had been pumping, and then, it wasn't. His fate was completely unambigious.

The other staff members exchanged awkward glances. What to say, at the death of the Empire?

Finally, a young woman managed to break the silence. "So...what do you suppose happened?" The talk was inane and trivial, but that's all they could handle, when the alternative was to really think about what it meant.

Voorzlanger thought carefully before answering. "Something out of his control, I'd imagine. It always is, with a genius."

And the artificial lights of Commexo City burned on. That was the

point

, Rojo had always argued. Magic dies with the magician, but technology doesn't care about the fate of the tinkerer.

Voorzlanger did not shed a single tear - not that could have, anyway. Without pretense of delicacy, he reached in to Rojo's suit pocket (he didn't normally sleep in a suit, but for the Council he had found it fitting) and pulled out the small key that made him the God of the City. Voorzlanger was heir designate, at least until

he

came of age.

So, Pixler was dead. They had planned for this. They had planned for everything.

Bloat stumbled out of bed, his head swimming.

The boat stank like death. Only now did Bloat think why. The others were all dead, weren't they? And that great damn big dragon the longest. Cleaning up the bodies, well, that was the sort of thing other people did, right? But there weren't any other people here. Only a skeleton crew of stitchlings, looking at him with dull, blank eyes.

He ran to the open deck of the ship, hoping for some fresh air. But the smell seemed to follow him. "Go away!" he screamed pointlessly into the wind, as though the stench was some specter he could drive away. As though in reply, a sudden squall cut across his face, so strong he nearly lost his footing, but

still there was that damn smell--

Bloat had never been one for justice, or karma, or any of that. But when faced with the evidence, he knew exactly what he had to do.

The zethik first. It was light. A hateful little creature, but innocent - well, as innocent as you can be in this trade. He had just wanted something to EAT, hadn't he, but they had kept him hungry and mean to get him to cooperate. Bloat threw the body overboard. No other way to bury it, and the fish of the Izabella were as hungry as he had been.

Leeman Vol next. The insects on his body had mysteriously avoided eating him, and in fact seemed to have driven away the normal insects that would lay eggs in his body. Funny how only the lice-ridden Vol smelled anything close to clean, now. As his body went in to the water, a few of his protector insects flew off, but the vast majority were still hanging on as he sank beneath the waves.

Houlihan wasn't on board - his body has walked away on it's own, the damn Star-Striker thirsty for blood. But Bloat was a superstitious man, now at least, and he carved Houlihan's signature tattoos into a plank of wood and threw it off the ship.

And finally Nythaganius. He had to get the stichlings to help. It had been hell, fitting that huge worm into the lower decks, and it was twice as hard to pull it out when it wasn't awake to help. All for what? So it could be there to plan with them? For some stupid Empire of Night? As he slowly, painfully slowly, brought the worm to the surface, he tried to remember what of this endeavor had seemed so appealing that he had gone along with it all.

When the dragon went over, the wave was enormous. The ship rocked, and Bloat went flying. He could see the railing in front of him. It would be easy enough to grab.

And then he'd go back under into the Council, and

then what?

A slim chance of the Midnight Empire? A victory for Christopher Carrion, the prince who wasn't even here? The Prince who didn't have to smell the damn smell that the water wasn't even covering up?

Bloat didn't grab the railing. Why bother?

It was clear to everyone in the Abarat that the Council had ended in favor of Day. Of course, it had been nothing more than a mental construct in a few minds, but no one could mistake the feeling of a great weight being lifted. Their dreams were free again. It was a win, and that was enough.

The only people who knew the details were sitting quietly on the Nonce. There had been time for a fragment of speech as the Council had passed final judgement. This is where they had agreed to meet. For so long, they had known nothing about each other, but now Finneagan Hob and Malingo were face to face.

Malingo broke the silence. "We won."

"I suppose we did."

"So that's...good."

"I suppose it is."

"They're like CAGES, Finneagan," and it was clear this is what they had both been thinking of, ever since the Council ended. "How do you suppose everyone does it?"

"I don't know."

"I mean, we did once, right?" Malingo bravely put on a smile. "It'll...it'll stop being so hard, eventually, right?"

"It will end, yes."

And then there was nothing more to say.

Note that the 3 Citizen PMs were RANDOMLY chosen out of the list of all of the citizen PMs. Deaux-Deaux was there because I was worried I was crafting PRs too close too flavor and that every PR claim could be guaranteed true. And, before I unlock the thread and let you kids go to town, I'm grabbing first word to debrief...

Well, the end of the game there was a nightmare. First off, I need to sincerely apologize to Flash. I had ended up not posting a VC in this game for over a week because there were no votes, not a problem itself but then deadline was very close. Without really considering the situation, I just threw on a day because I was tired and felt guilty. It was absolutely sloppy modding, and while Flash's gambit was a "Hail Merry" (chamber's spelling, not mine

), he had every right to have it play out as planned. It especially sucks because a bad design decision (not giving Shmugen the endgame clause the Abarat 1 BP had) also made Shmugen confirmed town which hurt Flash even more.

Bella's ongoing games violation actually happened about a week and a half ago. Basically, she just made a throwaway comment to chamber in scumchat about "congratulations on your impending victory" because she figured her RedCoyote hammer had thrown it for town. Since no information really changed hands, this actually didn't affect the gamestate, which is why you heard nothing about it. Asked a mod or two and it was agreed to just keep it mum until the endgame. The modkill is just because, well,

don't talk about ongoing goddamn games

- but Izzy's actions didn't influence gamestate.

Tammy, I just need to say: remember this rule?

Play to your win condition: I want you all to have fun, but you must always be trying to secure a win for your faction. Failure to do so might get you banned from all mafia games on-site, not just this one. Getting modkilled will turn you to a dead neutral survivor, so incurring a modkill is always playing against your factions wincon. Do not test my patience on this issue; I have none.

I'm sorry, but the one thing you really cannot say is "I don't want to win like this". You need to scratch and claw for any chance to win because that's how the setups are balanced and without that it falls down. Forcing town into being kingmaker between you and the sk has a non-zero chance of giving you a pity win, what you did had no chance. In the end, no punishment, if only because kingmaker is vile poison that I did my very best to keep out of the setup and still failed. But you did have a chance and you didn't pursue it and in almost any other situation it would have violated my play to wincon rule, especially in multiball where it took away Flash's chance to win because instead of throwing around the title of kingmaker until one person can't get rid of it, you just choose to become kingmaker before you had to.

MoI, your gambit was atrocious, and it is single-handedly going to make me write a more expansive anti-grudge rule for future games. There's a reason literally everyone is telling you it was bad, and that's because it was bad. You had every chance to recant and never did, and town suffered for it. You lied, and got caught lying, and everything was terrible. Not to mention all of the bad setup speculation town had to deal with with things like the Third Session event. Please, take your lumps, accept you made a mistake, and

apologize

to the town. They deserve it.

Don't think anyone likes games ending like this, but well, it's what it is. I think I'm gonna avoid anything more than 2 faction in the future. I'm taking a break from modding for a while (aside from my other currently running game).

Is that everything? Hmm. Well I wanted to talk a lot about the setup and the design, but I don't have it in me now. I guess ask me about specific bits and I can answer them, maybe a bigger one later.

Oh yeh, I'm super happy of how Gamma used his role. The funny thing is it technically seems to have next to no power, since it detects scum fakeclaims as normal PMs, but I figured it was an interesting twist on investigation and Gamma really did work with it. Of all of the weird roles and mechanics I put in I'm happiest with how Gamma used his.

I don't know who I'd call town MVP in general, it's been so long I've forgotten how people's reads have went. But gamma is role MVP. Also teamwork props to AGar and SoO for getting a successful double roleblock off, although I think you two could have done more to covertly try to reach each other.

yeah, houlihan was mostly there for flavor at the end. he was way more important in an original draft, where marapozsa street worked on the key, so there was the game of the key holder wants to be vanillized d2, but scum can suicide for the key, need to judge right then and there if it's worth it. in the end I felt that a mischief player with the key 2 would see no reason NOT to claim it explictly, so the game would only be interesting if I warned them of the scum dayvig, and I decided the whole subset had to go, while keeping houlihan in because it's incredibly low power and it's can't do the thing I hate about scum dayvigs (lylo being bumped up by surprise). I understand from the perspective of a dude who agonized over protecting it seems a little trollish, but it's one of those things that adheres so cleanly to flavor I wanted to keep it in.

Given the huge trouble there was filling this, I'm probably saving Absolute Midnight until some announcement that generates hype (maybe the fourth book comes out, maybe there's a tv series, maybe it just gets popularly discovered, etc.)

I can't reconstruct that situation in my mind right now but I'm reasonably sure it worked out that Bella was only saying "you're not of my faction" which Flash knew she knew because of the conf. towns. Or something.
