You have all been gathered here today for a very special reason. There is treachery afoot!

Just after having taken the world by storm with his hit single "Gangnam Style", the beloved Korean pop singer PSY was found dead in his vacation home. He was the victim of a gruesome murder. Local authorities found a message written in his blood scrawled across the wall next to his lifeless body:

OPPAN THIS!

There were no fingerprints found at the scene, but multiple sets of boot prints were found around the premises, presumably scouting entrances to the home. The Korean NPA has ascertained that even though one of the sets of prints was a close match to PSY's own moon boots, that this was undoubtedly not the work of a serial killer; a security camera at a nearby gas station distinctly observed two figures with obscured faces in an unmarked van (with a license plate holder reading 그 버튼남자들) driving towards the PSY estate at fourteen minutes before the time of death. The same van was observed driving recklessly away from the scene of the crime seventeen minutes after its first appearance.

There appeared to be signs of a struggle. The subject suffered multiple blunt force trauma attacks, had multiple lacerations, and several bullet wounds were apparent.

PSY, Beloved Prince of K-Pop has been murdered pre-game!

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to track down the bastards who did it! The prevailing rumors are that certain J-Pop stars became jealous of PSY's almost overnight success, and dispatched a pair of hit men to do their dirty work. Other rumors insist many different scenarios: that PSY forgot to pay off some Chinese triads who connected him with the right people for him to gain success; that certain Vietnamese gangs took offense to the mass commercialization of the word "Gangnam", as it bore too much resemblance to the "Gangs in 'Nam" moniker used for the annual violent crime expos which pre-dated PSY's use of the term in his song. The rest are even sillier than that, and don't bear mentioning.

The only thing that is for sure is that two of you need to be hunted down and brought to justice. And you only have a few days to accomplish this!

This game uses the

2of4

setup, an experimental setup designed to fix balance issues in previous Newbie setups. This is a semi-open setup, meaning that there are several options for what this setup could be, but the options are known to you. As with every Newbie game, random.org was used to determine both setup and role distribution.

There are six possible options for this setup:

Hello everyone, this is your IC speaking. While I'm a player who will be playing to my win condition, I am also a resource to help you learn how mafia is played here. I will answer anyone's questions about how the game is played, give copious amounts of advice, and evaluate everyone's play at the end.

First things first:
1) Always read your pm closely
2) Always read the mod's rules
3) Always understand what set-up you're playing. (We are now playing 2of4)

One of the worst things for town is to have a power role (PR) who doesn't understand how their role works. Town has at least one of 3 different PRs. You can read about those pr's on the wiki:

1)Doctor
2)Sane Cop
3)Jailkeeper

Scum have a Role Cop.

While you're generally allowed to play however you want within the site rules and game's specific rules, expect to be attacked if you violate one of the generally accepted principles of town play on this site:

1) Don't fake claim PRs

Fake claiming as a PR when you're a VT is likely to get you, and the town player who actually is that PR killed. Here's an example of why: I have enough votes that one more will result in my lynch. I claim that I'm the doctor. People start unvoting me, until the actual doctor says "wait, he's lying." Everyone lynches me, and then the mafia kill the actual doctor that night.

This scenario is a reason scum may want to fake claim a PR when they're about to be lynched. We can discuss the cost/benefit analysis of lynching a claimed PR if that comes up during the game.

2) Don't rolefish

As town, we don't want scum to find out our power roles are because scum will then kill them. So if somebody breadcrumbs their power role by, e.g., starting their first three posts with C...O...P, don't call them out on it. We want our PRs to stay hidden until they think it's worth revealing themselves. A corollary to this is to not claim unless you need to. We don't want a bunch of people volunteering that they're VT early on.

As scum, you want to role fish - but getting caught will get you lynched. Tread carefully.

3) Don't give up

Nothing is more annoying for your team than to see you refuse to try. Remember that you can be die and still win the game. So, if you're about to be mislynched as town, take advantage of the fact that everyone is about to know that you are town and put your current thoughts out there. Never self hammer as town.

Claiming to be scum and revealing the scum team is probably the fastest way to get perma-banned. Don't do it. Self-hammering as scum to cut off discussion is okay if you don't think you have a chance of preventing a lynch, e.g. a cop has claimed a guilty on you.



Finally, mafia is fundamentally a game where an uninformed minority tries to gain enough information to find the informed majority before it's too late. Taking stances on other players and taking chances by actually voting help your fellow townies to figure out who has a hidden motivation. Random voting is normally used to get a game going by making people do something to generate discussion.

Why a random voting stage(RVS)?

Because it pressures players in ways that a random question stage doesn't. Votes are a concrete action with consequences. I can act the exact same way in a random question stage regardless of my alignment. I really don't have any incentive to act differently. Most scum want both to avoid the spotlight and to keep the spotlight off their partner, thus they have an incentive to act differently than town in RVS. RVS will end when someone thinks that another person's "random" vote or other behavior is suspicious enough to warrant discussion.

There's a standardized format for voting on mafia scum:
