Rules: (borrowed and modified from chkflip)

1. This game uses the Newbie 2of4 setup, which is a semi-open setup.

2. To vote for a player, bold the word "vote" followed by said player's name, e.g.
Vote: Jackal711
. As long as I can tell to whom you are referring, spelling does not count and I will accept abbreviated or otherwise shortened forms of the name of the vote's recipient. If you change your mind about whom you want lynched, you must bold an unvote, preferably in the format
Unvote: Jackal711
. You may also Vote: No Lynch, and Unvote: No Lynch. Use of the vote and unvote tags is also allowed, and preferred.

3. A majority of votes is required for a lynch, even at deadline. Once a lynch has been decided, it is final and further votes and unvotes do not count for the current day. If deadline is reached with no player having enough votes for a lynch, the day ends in an automatic No Lynch.

4. Once you're lynched, nightkilled, or modkilled (a modkill ends the day ONLY if the modkilled player is pro-town), I'll allow one "bah" post that doesn't contain any game-related content if you wish to make it, but you must thereafter stop posting in the game. Said "bah" post is the only post a dead player may make during twilight. Living players may continue to talk during twilight as long as they follow all of the rules.

5. You are not forced to like each other, but the fact that you badly want so and so offed does not give you the right to insult him or her. Please keep your hatred of people or groups thereof to yourself unless you want a warning. Three warnings (or an offensive enough post) and you will be ejected from the game and replaced with someone else.

6. Do not hide text or otherwise hinder its readability by using spoiler tags, invisible text, etc. THIS INCLUDES ENCRYPTED TEXT! You may, however, post in any color that can be easily read against the forum background other than
blue
or
bolded blue
. This is my mod color. Violators will be warned. Doing it again will result in replacement.

7. Impersonating the moderator WILL NOT HAPPEN. Doing so, you will be replaced.

8. If you somehow have the ability to edit or delete your posts in this forum, please DO NOT do so. If I catch you doing such, you will be replaced or modkilled.

9. You are not allowed to discuss this game outside of the thread unless I tell you otherwise, and then only with whom I have allowed you to do so and at your specified time. Breaking this rule WILL result in a modkill.

10. Discussing an ongoing game in this game's thread gets you a warning the first time and a MODKILL the second time.

11. Do not quote or pretend to quote any private communication, either from me or from anyone else you are allowed to talk with at night. This includes your role PM. Violators will be modkilled. You are allowed to paraphrase, but you are not allowed to plagiarize. If in doubt as to your paraphrase's legality, PM me with the wording you want to use.

12. Claiming to be scum with someone else will result in a modkill.

13. I will issue a prod to any player that does not post for
48
hours without notifying me of his or her absence. If you are prodded, you will have
24
hours from the time of submission to post in thread. Failure to do so may result in replacement. I will only prod the same player twice. If a third prod is required, they will be replaced.

14. I am not God (or a Lawyer). I am only human and prone to making mistakes like any of us. If I do make a mistake please bring it to my attention either via PM or in thread. If addressing me in thread please do so in bold
@Mod: (message)

15. All rules are subject to change. If there are changes I will point them out in the next posted vote count.

16. All lynches and actions are considered to be done instantly. Obviously I can't be on all the time, so they will be posted as soon as possible. Night actions are considered to all happen at the same time. The principles of NAR (Natural Action Resolution) as discussed in the Wiki will apply in any conflict.

17. Deadlines will be 3 weeks for Days, and 72 hours for Night.

18. If anyone gets modkilled, they will turn into a Neutral Survivor for all purposes and will lose the game. Day will also end immediately if they were town-aligned.

19. The most important rule of all, saved for last for what I think is a very good reason: HAVE FUN! Enjoy! And good luck!

The 2of4 setup is a test game format we're trying out in Newbie Games to get around balance issues with the F11 setup. To prevent the development of game-breaking strategies, these Newbie Games are semi-open, wherein the actual game setup is randomly chosen as detailed below:

  • 1
    mafia role cop
  • 1
    mafia goon
  • 5
    townies
  • 2 of the following with no duplicates possible:
    • 1
      town cop
    • 1
      town doctor
    • 1
      town jailkeeper
    • 1
      townie

Keep the following in mind:

  1. The role cop has the option of submitting both investigations and kills, even when the goon is still alive.
  2. Mafia must specify who is performing what Night action when the actions are submitted!

Below are all of the possible role PMs:

Mafia Goon wrote:

You are the Mafia Goon, along with PlayerX, who is a Mafia Rolecop.

During the night, both of you may talk amongst yourself here to devise your strategy for the next day. You may also talk prior to the beginning of the day, but all talk must cease once the day begins and until the next night comes.
You may only talk to each other during the pre-game and at night.

You both also have the ability to kill one player during the night.
You must designate who will do the night-kill

You win when the mafia exceed the number of town players left in the game, or when nothing is able to prevent that from happening.

If you have read and understood your role, please confirm by return PM stating your role.

Mafia Rolecop wrote:

You are the Mafia Rolecop, along with PlayerY, who is a Mafia Goon.

During the night, both of you may talk amongst yourself here to devise your strategy for the next day. You may also talk prior to the beginning of the day, but all talk must cease once the day begins and until the next night comes.
You may only talk to each other during the pre-game and at night.

You may also investigate another player each night to determine their role (whether they are a vanilla townie, doctor, cop, or jailkeeper)

You both also have the ability to kill one player during the night.
You must designate who will do the night-kill

You win when the mafia exceed the number of town players left in the game, or when nothing is able to prevent that from happening.

If you have read and understood your role, please confirm by return PM stating your role.

Vanilla Townie wrote:

You are just a regular townsperson. (aka Vanilla Townie)

Though you have no special abilities, you do have the ability to vote for one person each day. Use it wisely.

You win when all the mafia have been eliminated from the game.

If you have read and understood your role, please confirm by return PM stating your role.

Town Cop wrote:

You are the town cop, sent via the local law enforcement.

Every night you may investigate a player, and will receive notification as to whether or not they are town (aka "Not Guilty") or scum (aka "Guilty")

If your ability is blocked by the Jailkeeper, you will not receive any result.

You win when all the mafia have been eliminated from the game.

If you have read and understood your role, please confirm by return PM stating your role.

Town Doctor wrote:

You are the town doctor, able to protect others from harm.

Each night, you may choose someone who you will protect from the night-kill. this ONLY protects from the night-kill, and nothing else.
You can not target yourself.

If your ability is blocked by the jailkeeper, you will not be notified as to whether or not it has suceeded.

You win when all the mafia have been eliminated from the game.

If you have read and understood your role, please confirm by return PM stating your role.

Town Jailkeeper wrote:

You are the jailkeeper for the town, in charge of the local prisons.

Each night you may choose someone to keep in jail. This action will prevent any actions from being done to them, but will also prevent them from doing any actions.
You can not target yourself.

You win when all the mafia have been eliminated from the game.

If you have read and understood your role, please confirm by return PM stating your role.

The fact that the second post should vote against whoever posted in the thread first for some arbitrary reason. As for it being a joke, it is increasingly difficult to recognize joking and sarcasm on the internet, so if it truly is a joke, my apologizes, then.

Hello everyone!

I'm the IC for this game. For people who haven't played before, that means that I'm an experienced player who's been placed in the game in order to help you learn how we play Mafia here (and then inevitably die night 1). It also means that, contrary to correct play in pretty much every game ever, I'm going to be giving the scum advice publicly as well as the town. (Normally, this is a really bad idea, obviously. But my main priority is helping people to learn. I will, of course, be playing to win, because Mafia games are much less fun if people don't play to win.) So if you have questions about what's going on, I'm a good person to ask. (If the questions relate to secret information, it's probably better to ask the mod, though. "I'm scum and don't know what to do" is a potentially valid query, but asking it in thread is probably a bad idea.)

Most games here start with an "RVS", or random voting stage. The idea is that at the start of the game, only the scum have any useful information, so there's no real basis on which to make a vote. As such, people normally make joke votes or the like. The idea is that eventually, someone will pick up on something that someone else has said and be able to make a serious vote, and then the game can get properly started.

Although I see the RVS has started already, I'm not personally such a fan of it. In every other game I've played, I've either replaced in after it had already ended, or lurked the first couple of days and avoided it that way. But I'm playing this game through from the start and not lurking, because it's my job to keep things moving.

As such, I'm going to try my best to work out who's scum based on the posts so far. It's not going to be very accurate, with no information on, but I believe everyone should always have a vote out on their top scumread (or who they want people to think is their top scumread, for if they're scum or reaction testing) in order to make them easier to read. The easiest route to a town victory is if the entire town tries to make themselves as easy to read as possible; it'll be hard for the scum to blend in in that case. So we all need votes out. (Also, to make sure Not Voting doesn't accidentally get hammered at the first vote count because there are five or more people not voting. I'm sure the mod won't confuse the two Not Voting lines in the vote count, but best to be prepared.)

So. How to draw conclusions from the RVS votes so far? I think it's marginally townier to make RVS votes which aren't obvious username jokes or objective claims or the like; a username joke can be made just as easily from either alignment, but if you're picking someone at "random", if you're scum, you have to think about whether you're picking your scumbuddy or not.

So I think the scummiest vote so far is Pizzadudes7's. Voting for the first poster is a safe RVS vote that you can easily get away with as any alignment, and thus it's making him a little scummier in my eyes, because it's making him a little harder to read.

Hey, IC, of judgementness.

I'm new to Mafiascum, but not to the mafia games. I've played a bit overall offline with family and friends, but most of my experience comes from epicmafia games, and since those games are considerably less lengthy than the ones here, this game will effectively serve as a transition between the two play styles.

As for your vote regarding Pizza, his vote doesn't hold much basis logically, even if it was a completely random vote, the justification was incredibly poor. Perhaps it was a joke, or something, but I'm far too serious to recognize such things. :P

Yeah, the basis is bunk, but for random votes, it pretty much has to be. The potential suspiciousness there is just that it's so uncreative (I've definitely seen it used before).

Also, newbie games are some of the longest on Mafiascum for their player count. The reason is that they have such a high number of players dropping out, and the game repeatedly has to be held up to find replacements. (Look at how long the game took to start. It was quite slow even for the new players, and took almost two months for me. This is one reason why I normally replace into games when not IC'ing; it helps to get games that may have already been badly disrupted back on track. For ICs, though, you want the same person all along in order to avoid additional disruption.)

Even so, Epicmafia games generally last 10-20 minutes, so to give you an idea of how MASSIVELY short their games are, though they are still fun, and I suppose one of the factors that makes this so is the short amount of time it takes; it's fast pace holds up well, in my opinion.

And yeah, this game took a bit long; I waited for what... one or two days, I believe. Although, from my browsing around during the wait time, a two month wait wouldn't surprise me much at all.

And yes, now I am just chatting nonsensically, but meh, nothing else to do until the one or more of the RVS candidates actually show up.

Yep. I've never played a game of Mafia before, on this or any other site, but I've been reading through some completed games so I should have a vague inkling of what I'm doing. Also, my user is usually shortened to Troubles if it's a handful to type.
Chatting nonsensically is good, posts are good, questions are good. But casting any doubt on me in the slightest is bad! So you get my RVS vote.

Thanks for at participating in the game, at least. On the contrary, my reasons for specifically addressing you is to spur some sort of discussion, until RVS candidates begin posting.

Do you have any thoughts or commentary on the aforementioned posts, so far?

Nothing in particular, though I suppose that's not exactly a rarity on this site given that we've had less than a page of posts and even less that actually contain any substance. The amount of replacements in this game already is a worry though. People not replying to their role PM's or replacing out before the game has even started might show that they weren't happy with their roles?
