Why is Melvil Dewey's first name spelled at it is, instead of the more common "Melville"? He had also for a while signed his last name "Dui"; why?

Born Melville Louis Kossuth Dewey, Dewey was very unhappy with American spelling rules. After creating the Dewey Decimal System, he turned his attention to reforming spelling, although with not nearly as much success. His ideas still have not been adopted, even until today.

That's why I said earlier that if there is no tangible benefit to the town in having him around (ie- he catches scum when he's town, so we ride the dragon a day or two and keep an eye on him), we lynch him. Or if his role has negative utility (governor), we off him.
