Orthel's first attempt to get a man into space was under way.

"T-minus 45 seconds."

Hajek Biederman wasn't nervous. He'd put in hundreds of hours of training for the mission. Perhaps even thousands.

"T-minus 30 seconds."

30 seconds until Hajek would take off into space. 30 seconds until Hajek would go rocketing into the sky, out of the atmosphere, going where no man has gone before.

"T-minus 15 seconds"

Haj was ready.

The G-forces hit Haj almost instantly. The roar of the engines below him were deafening. It was all so exhilarating.

"Biederman, this is mission control. It appears that some debris has punctured the final stage's fuel hose. We can get you up, but we wouldn't be able to get you down. Cut the engines when you reach 5 km, separate the command pod from the rocket, and parachute back down."

Hajek hesitated. He could still make it into space. He could still make history, at the cost of his life.

"Biederman, you've passed 5 km. You need to cut the engines immediately."

Haj still couldn't make up his mind. Was it worth it?

"Biederman, you need to cut the engines right now. Do you read me?"

Haj audibly sighed over the radio.

"Yes, I read you"

The engines were cut. The stack separators were activated. Hajek's command pod parachuted down to safety.


The rescue team met up with Hajek's pod where it touched down.

"It's okay Hajek. We heard that they're going to attempt the mission next week. You still have a shot to make history."

We do not think of it as, ahem, breeding more intelligent dogs. We think of it as, ah, um, bringing intelligence to the mole people. In forms that the surface world may think of as dogs. If they'd like. Yes.

It's all more than counterbalanced by the good done in the name of Armok, God of War, is it not?

I mean, if you take the long view, the sacrifice of a single dorf this year can have saved the live of tens of quintillion dorfs a million years down the line. Exponential equations, I am told. And if you are asking me the choice between one dorf and ten quintillion dorfs, I would have no choice but to side with the ten quintillion.

High Chancellor, would you be interested in working collaboratively to create the first true Artificial Intelligence?

It should also be noted that we here in Swizzerland are very interested in this field of research as well. Granted, our current computers are somewhat bulky and cumbersome, being water-and-pressure-plate-based, but we're working out the kinks as we go and find it simply a fascinating prospect. Just wanted to interject that into our little ethical debate.

Unfortunately in the Holy Empire we feel that the life of one is valuable enough that it's not worth the

potential

in the future. However if you would cease your testing on live dorfs and work towards assisting our Artificial Intelligence project, perhaps we could work towards later adapting the programming to creating a servant race through that without having to risk a single life.

Granted I am not well versed in that area of study, but Mhorkish researchers have assured me that with science and faith, most anything is possible.

In addition the Twin Houses approve for joint research and collaboration to be based in Sri'Lanka. Offices of the local F.A.S.H.I.O.N. headquarters will be made available for work and research and plenty of hotels should be available for researchers to stay comfortably.
