I know Modern relatively well. What type of deck do you enjoy the most? Combo/Control/Aggro/Tempo/something between these? What about Standard decks, what was your favourite recently? In post 4124, InflatablePie wrote:GR Tron runs Relic of Progenitus, some decks will run Scooze, and there's tons of other stuff like Rest in Peace/Tormod's Crypt/Nihil Spellbomb to stop graveyard shenanigans.
GY Strategies in general will be a bit more popular for a bit, I bet.
Also I should play Modern. Still dunno what deck I want to run; GR Tron looks fun but is pricey, MonoU Tron seems okay, Ninja Bear Delver looks fun and gives me some blue staples if I move out of the deck, Birthing Pod is my favorite card but fetches are expensive... I saw an Esper Gifts list on CFB that looks kinda fun, and then there's this deck... *shrug*
@Reck, U-Tron is wicked fun, but be aware that it's a HUGE grindfest. Mindslaver lock doesn't technically kill them right away, so if they're a dick then you have to manually deck them/beat them to death with a Wurmcoil.-

FWIW, everything I've read points to fetches being pretty much necessary, so you're gonna need to buy them eventually if you end up playing modern seriously, Pie.
This also reminds me I need to look into that Melira Pod list again.Ski mask? Check! Sawed off? Check! Guilty conscience, fear of death? Check! Check! Check!

Which I think shows the power of the card. DRS has nothing to do with Melira Pod's main combo, but it made the deck viable by just being strong in the 1 drop.
Though now I think that DRS ban is probably going to result in a Snap ban, as well, since they just ousted it's main counter. One time, back in 'nam, Sudo was set upon by an entire squadron of charlies. He challenged them all to a game of Pictionary, which he won resoundingly. The charlies were forced to not only surrender the skirmish, but also their world-famous chili recipe, which Sudo sold to Texas for a hefty profit. Sudo is a master of diplomacy.-

The fetches are a fairly subtle power level, and it's hard to point to anything they do that's banworthy, but the fetches do enable a lot of these deck- 3 color+ decks would be much, much harder without fetches to fix for them. One time, back in 'nam, Sudo was set upon by an entire squadron of charlies. You don't ban something because it is rare or expensive. Wizards assumes competitive players have the entire card pool to play with.In post 4136, Fate wrote:reprint fetches in 2015 problem solved?Show"I'm from Indiana. I know what you're thinking: Indiana... Mafia." - Jim Gaffigan

Not sure that Wizards cares to do that/actively doesn't want to do that. One time, back in 'nam, Sudo was set upon by an entire squadron of charlies. They like to reprint cards that will sell sets without harming the secondary market too badly. One time, back in 'nam, Sudo was set upon by an entire squadron of charlies. Wizards actually doesn't have a problem with reprinting Modern staples to help get people into the format. Hence Modern Masters, reprints of Mutavault, Scooze, Thoughtseize etc. It just has the side effect ofsometimesdropping the price (didn't Goyf go up, for instance?).
@bv: Tempo > Combo > Aggro >> Control >> Midrange. Usually. I loved Pod decks when I first started, as well as decks that just go 'oops, I win' (so Combo is pretty fun for me). I do find that sequencing the right plays and knowing when to attack/defend (basically tempo) is more enjoyable for me because it's more skill-rewarding. I enjoy playing control occasionally, but I like aggro moreso.
This Standard I've played lots of RW Devotion and 'PyroRed' (Chandra, Young Pyromancer, Chandra's Phoenix; aggro-tempo). Last standard I played RG aggro for a bit. I would have played monoU Devotion had I gotten in on Masters before they spiked, because the synergies and the feel of the deck post-sideboards looked really fun.If you don't know how to lie, then how do you know when you're being lied to?

Incidentally I would be surprised if fetches weren't reprinted at some point. But wizards has said they dont like people sitting around shuffling their deck all day long cause thats time not spent BATTLING so that hurts fetches somewhat - regardless even if they're now a no-go for a standard legal set I'd be surprised if they were never reprinted in some supplementary set, because reprinting expensive stuff is a fantastic way of monetising the secondary market for wizards.(10:50:24 PM) xcaykex: GODDAMNIT I DONT WANNA GET RID OF MY TENTACLE RAPE PORN

So I went 4-1 last night with BUG. I'm having fun with it.
Spoiler: BUG Control
I won against UWR control, RB minotaurs, BW midrange and BUG Midrange(Almost a straight 75 of Hoogland's last list). Lost to Jund Monsters. I also played friendlies vs UW control and RG Monsters, which came as expected(I utterly dominated the UW matchup, and went ~3-4 vs GR). I'm liking the list now--Drown In Sorrow really helps out the previously-terrible aggro matchup(which stopped this deck from being competitive pre-BotG).
Needle in the main was a joke--I had the second Devour main before. The Eye Gouge was a test for the night, and the card came out as I expected: it sucked! best thing it did was -1/-1 a stormbreath for my Prognostic to block all night.
Going forward, I need to find a Kiora, but here's my planned changes for next week.
-1 Eye Gouge
-1 Pithing Needle
+1 Ultimate Price
+1 Kiora, the Crashing Wave
and -1 Devour Flesh
-1 Duress
+1 Bile Blight
+1 Pithing Needle
(Needle is very important in the board to beat random AEtherlings)Natirasha is just a vestige, it's Contessa now.-

I think you'd really enjoy DredgeVine: http://www.mtgo-stats.com/decks/95305 or maybe Gifts Control: http://www.mtgo-stats.com/decks/95510 both of which have gotten much better with Dickbag Shaman out of the formatIn post 4127, xRECKONERx wrote:I basically want to play something that isn't incredibly prone to error (since I make errors a lot) but isn't a mindless "turn things sideways and win". Yeah, but you only have to buy them once, and they're never going to fall in price, short of a reprint (which will drop it by $20 or so, temporarily) or some other disgustingly good 3-drop black walker that pushes Lily out. Buy them one at a time over the next few weeks, it makes it easier to deal with.In post 4148, xRECKONERx wrote:mmm... 3x Lilly wasn't what I had in mind by cheap/affordable
