I wasn't aware culture buildings weren't worth the upkeep they took. Got ganked by America (ai) early >~< too

Culture buildings are good late but not early.

Monuments are still crucial though. Free Monuments is one of the big reasons to go Tradition.

(Sadly, in Vanilla Civ, Liberty is bonkers--lol settler is a tier 1)

tl;dr I'm wasting gold per turn by building non-monument culture buildings early.

I wasn't aiming for a culture victory at the time.

I suppose its not a waste if you are, but only if you are hardlining culture victory.

See, this is tricky, because I only started play Civ with any sort of competency with BNW where culture is unimportant to a culture victory(Tourism replaces it), and in BNW the culture buildings are just sort of blank--if you want to do a culture win well, you have to get the good theming wonders and stuff.

In Vanilla-G&K, they are the main route to a cultural victory. So you sorta have to build them. The issue becomes, though, that due to various other elements in the game(Liberty being bonkers, happiness being easier to handle, and no tech cost increase for more citizens), going wide is much better than going tall. Cultural victory in pre-BNW is so much slower and requires so many trade offs vs the benefits of going wide in regards to science/production(not to mention the economic drain that culture buildings provide) that just skipping the middleman and killing everyone or building spaceships is just easier, faster and more efficient.

Even in BNW, where they changed the culture wincon to tourism to help make it on level with the others, it's still slower without a few certain cheese strats(the Sacred Sites religious belief being the most prominent one) and should only be attempted in a serious game if your geographic location is exceptionally poor.

Now, if you're on your own and you want to pursue a culture win, that's obviously fine and all(I like winning by culture or diplomacy in single player because it takes less effort). But it's not efficient.

I'm curious, what Civ game is BE most similar to? I'd be interested in buying it if it was similar to Civ 3, but less so for Civ 5, since I've been less than impressed with how the series has progressed.

I've only glanced at streams of it, but it looks like a differently themed clone of civ 5 to me.

Um. It feels like neither, honestly. It's less focused on military, at least with this run. Everything is a bit slower but way more open ended. Also there's, like, no real path

Game is completely broken apparently--trade routes are OP and they, once again, forgot that giving free settlers really early(since you get culture at a quicker rate) is stupid.

Also health is completely ignorable so you just sit there and spam cities.

Play on a higher difficulty?

I won relatively easily on normal as the Slavic federation. Beelined a transcendent victory as quickly as I could thanks to the ungodly a mouth of xeno mass in my area. Finished around turn 331

I'm now gonna try for a purity win if possible

Trade routes aren't OP, they're just strictly
necessary
in order to keep your energy economy running at anything near feasible levels until later in the game, IME

and I disagree that health is ignorable

I was talking internal trade routes. +10 food/prod(Vs BNW's 4) per route per city is pretty much bonkers and completely outclasses tile or building-based yields.

ah yeah internal trade routes are pretty silly; if you can spare an internal for a new city then you can bring it up to speed much faster (especially since surplus economy is almost entirely used for purchasing buildings and units now, since you don't have to spend energy/gold to promote units)
