So want to play magic. Falling in love with Card games at the moment. I just hate a lot of the people that play it. I played Friday Night Magic once and the people there were all the worst kind of nerd sterotypes. Not much space, and everyone was fat and smelly or 12 and obnoxious.
EDIT: NOT THAT I AM NOT FAT AND OBNOXIOUS BUT I TRY NOT TO BE.
It's unfortunate that good oral sex excuses bad chemistry. - Korts
Like any community you have to find the right part of it. There certainly are parts of the magic community that are as you describe. You can find the parts that aren't, though. Like MS vs. EpicMafia

I've only been to one FNM and I had two cool opponents and one fat, ponytail'd virgin type who, before I played his netdecked devotion to black (which was the most played deck at the time) he said something like, "huh huh I feel bad for you for having to play against this deck bro huhuhuhuh" or some variation of it three times during the match. I'll go back one day when I can afford a few decent cards and exact my revenge.
There's always douchebags, just some of them who are more visible than others
If you want to play the game, but don't want to deal with the dickbags who play, there's the Duels of the Planeswalkers series on Steam/Android, and Magic Online. I play on MTGO almost exclusively right now, because I'm living in the absolute middle of nowhere, and it's the methadone to my cardboard heroin addiction.
It depends on what format you're getting into. You can spend less than $100 on a deck that can consistently beat people at most FNMs in a standard tourney.
If you don't want to do that or dont know how much time you'll have to devote to it, you can just do drafts for $10-15 a pop and try to build a deck if you get good draws from those then fill in the spaces.
The deck I posted at the bottom of the last page would cost about $150ish to put together, and most of that is held up in Flooded Strand/Temple of Enlightenment. Strands aren't thoroughly needed either, though they help the deck a TON.
Edit: It's also a deck that one of the Pros took to the Pro Tour last weekend. It's definitely good enough for FNM/Standard Dailies online.
You can also have some friends put together a cube. Cube drafting is amazing, and once you build it there's no additional cost.
I went together with 7 other friends and we spent $25 each and we put together a cube that so far has been drafted maybe 50 times.
Cut the Blinding Flare for more Stoke the Flames/Lightning Strike. Flare isn't really a great card unless you're already ahead on board, and more removal would have the same effect.
I have the deep suspicion that any deck not playing Treasure Cruise or Dig Through Time is wrong.
One time, back in 'nam, Sudo was set upon by an entire squadron of charlies. He challenged them all to a game of Pictionary, which he won resoundingly. The charlies were forced to not only surrender the skirmish, but also their world-famous chili recipe, which Sudo sold to Texas for a hefty profit. Sudo is a master of diplomacy.
Dig through time is really really good. I'm less sold on treasure cruise. The effect seems weaker, and its a sorcery instead of an instant. The huge upside is that you can get it down to costing U instead of UU, but I don't think that's a thing in standard?

Speaking as a Melira Pod player, Treasure Cruise is the card I least want to see right now. The thing's just insanely good, to the point that I'm wondering what I can run that'll actually shut it down without being dead 90% of the time.
jdodge1019: hasjghsalghsakljghs is from vermont
jdodge1019: vermont is made of liberal freaks and cows

Hascow/Cow are acceptable shortened names, never "Has"
