My prerelease tonight went well. I chose Sultai because I'm on the hunt for UB control rares and I was not left disappointed. Went 3-1, only dropping games to this dude who somehow had Daghatar+Siege Rhino+Warden of the First Tree.
In the end, my spoils of the night were
2x Silumgar(checked off the list)
1x Crux of Fate(2 more to go!)
1x Polluted Delta(my sealed pool was amazing)
1x Brutal Hordechief(not for UB but notable)
The rest were either unremarkable or actively bad--in the nine packs I opened overall, I got 2 Scroll of the Masters and a Dragon Throne of Tarkir. :///
In any case, I'm just 2 Ashioks, Ugin and 3 Polluted Deltas away from having all the money cards for UB now, so I'm getting there.
Went Temur, wanted to play Jeskai based on my cards, but went with a slightly awkward green "splash" instead based on my fixing and played temur instead. Went 3-1, was fun. Largely the cards played as I expected. Notable exceptions - humble defector overperformed even though I never got to play any of the little synergies I had with him (the delve bounce spell and the green nutso uncommon indestructible bounce thing, not that that guy needs synergies to be nutty). Jeskai Sage I also wasn't sure would be good, but I was able to get value out of him an awful lot of the time, and sometimes he was just a straight up 2 for 1. Underperfomed was probably Write Into Being, which ended up being ok but I thought it would be better than that and it wasn't.

Picked temur, but found I had like 6 dual lands after opening all the packs.
Went 5 colour good stuff, including like 3 dragons and surrak.
5-0 and 1st.
i found the manifest stuff for 2 and 3 was pretty decent it's fine late because it cycles a bit. They shouldn't be able to go super trigger happy with removal on every manifest you play, so if you manifest a bomb late in the game it'll probably survive to flip up. About my only 2 or 3 drop I was unhappy drawing after turn 5 was like dragon bell monk and jeskai infiltrator. Speaking of which, Jeskai infiltrator was absolutely insane as the first minion on 3, because 2 manifest creatures is really good and if you can get through with it again you can flip to use its ability again. It also has pseudo vigilance.
I think with write into being if you get two lands and a big creature on 3, and you have enough lands in hand you should manifest the land.
How do Hardened Scales and Doubling Season interact?
One time, back in 'nam, Sudo was set upon by an entire squadron of charlies. He challenged them all to a game of Pictionary, which he won resoundingly. The charlies were forced to not only surrender the skirmish, but also their world-famous chili recipe, which Sudo sold to Texas for a hefty profit. Sudo is a master of diplomacy.
Went 3-1 in singles and 2-1-1 in 2HG today. My partner in 2HG opened Sidisi-Foil Windswept Heath in his Khans pack.

The biggest asshole I know in Magic plays Pod against 12 year olds at FNM at lightspeed and then gloats about his wins and makes sure everyone in the store knows what he gets in his prize packs. This gives me a warm fuzzy feeling.
Also, Dredgevine is back. And Jund. And basically every creature deck that wasn't Pod might have a chance. I'm happy to take that trade-off for "not being able to play out an entire hand of burn then Cruise and find the last 2 points of damage for virtually free".
Not sure about the DTT ban. It just made combo decks more consistent which isn't a bad thing for the format necessarily. No-one was playing it in Delver and I doubt they would play a full playset with the UU casting cost. I'd like to have seen it given another 3 months to see if it became as pervasive as Cruise.
So, Treasure Cruise is gone in Modern and Legacy, and restricted in Vintage. I suppose they finally figured out that Ancestral Recall is broken. Only took them 23 years of magic, but at least they eventually got there.

Birthing Pod is one of my favorite Magic cards. The first deck I ever bought was the DKA event deck with Birthing Pods, and one of my first 'competitive' decks was Mono-B Zombie Pod. I was considering slowly buying into Rhino Pod since all I really needed were enemy fetches, two Noble Hierarchs and some flagship one-ofs (Orzhov Pontiff etc.) as far as expensive cards went.
At least I didn't already buy them, but... this ban hurts.
Guess my options are EDH or building a cube with heavy Pod support.
If you don't know how to lie, then how do you know when you're being lied to?
No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible.
I just spent six months trading for Pod on PucaTrade. All of my Modern staples besides Pod stuff went out. I'm pretty much out of Magic in paper entirely now.
I'm not convinced this is going to make the format more diverse, but I'm sure as hell it's going to make the format more expensive. Prohibitively so, most likely. Also not looking forwards to infinite goyfs bashing into goyfs. We'll see, but I don't see anything to be happy about with the bans.
Edit: Oh, except that I like the ban of cruise in legacy. I actually think the card was more warping there than in modern. Just a quick look at SCG open results shows 3 of the last 5 were won by delver, another had delver in the finals, and overall delver decks made up about a quarter of top 8 slots. Which is extraordinary in a format normally as open as legacy.

Now what?
Surrender, imagine and of course wear something nice.

I think atm you have to move over to GW Hatebears. That shouldn't be ~too~ terrible on the budget all things considered(ie, yes it sucks).
I honestly don't mind the Pod ban, but it really is a middle finger to any player who doesn't have a store or company providing them with staples. I know six or seven people in your position right now. This ban, more than most others, shows that wizards really doesn't know how to provide for their players. Like, anyone who says 'economics shouldn't play a role in metagame development' should literally be pointed directly to this ban.
Also, the corellary: never invest in modern staples that don't see play in Legacy, because Wizards will ban your deck eventually.
In other news--with two of it's worst matchups gone, Mono G Devotion and Merfolk are back!
Well I sold all the online stuff I had and bought Affinity, so that's nice and solidly Tier 1.
For paper, I think I'm going to start making some flavour of Goyf-less Zoo with Knight of the Reliquary. I have everything I'd need for the manabase, so it's just a matter of getting Wooded Foothills and Nacatls.
