And welcome back to $ale of The Century, and I'm so glad that you're still with us, and we've got an exciting second round coming up, but let's recap the scores first of all.

StrangerCoug has $51, puzzledan has $32, and RedCoyote has $61. However, the scores are going to change even more, because in this round, regular questions are now worth $10 each. In fact, this is a 6 x 2 x $10 round. Meaning there are 2 sets of 6 questions, each worth $10.

We also got some special events coming up in this round as well, so let's get started by giving you the questions.

1. What famous highway has a branch that runs from Chicago all the way to Miami?
2. How do you spell a word meaning 'to express pleasure at someone's good luck or good fortune'?
3. You just got off the plane at Auckland Airport. One of the locals smiles at you and says, "Kia Ora!" What did she mean by that?
4. The alcoholic version of this drink contains tomato juice, vodka, horseradish and Worcestershire sauce, garnished with a stalk of celery. What is the name of the NON alcoholic version?
5. Moby Dick. Back to American literature - this time a novel -the White Whale calls forth images of pursuit and obsession. Who was the captain in pursuit?
6. For the fashionable Victorian lady in 1870-1880's, where was the bustle?

PM me your buzzcodes 1-50 with 0 for 'Pass', as well as your answers now.

All right, here we go with the questions.

What famous highway has a branch that runs from Chicago all the way to Miami?

Image

(Buzz In)

puzzledan.

puzzledan:
Route 66.

Believe it or not, you're wrong.

(buzzer)

I kid you not. The correct answer is the Dixie Highway. The Dixie Highway actually has two branches, the Eastern branch and Western Branch. The Eastern branch originates in Chicago and the Western branch originates in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan. Both branches meet in Indianapolis, Chattanooga, Atlanta and Miami. The Eastern branch of Dixie Highway runs through Louisville, KY.

That's a $10 loss for an incorrect answer.

Image

How do you spell a word meaning 'to express pleasure at someone's good luck or good fortune'?

Image

(Buzz In)

StrangerCoug.

StrangerCoug:
Schadenfreude.

Wrong!

(buzzer)

Schadenfreude is pleasure derived from the misfortunes of others. You went the wrong way. We're looking for an easier word: Congratulate.

You lose $10 for that.

Image

You just got off the plane at Auckland Airport. One of the locals smiles at you and says, "Kia Ora!" What did she mean by that?

Image

(Buzz In)

puzzledan.

puzzledan:
Welcome.

Hi or Hello is the answer, but Welcome is acceptable as well, so you get the $10 back.

Image

(ding)

The alcoholic version of this drink contains tomato juice, vodka, horseradish and Worcestershire sauce, garnished with a stalk of celery. What is the name of the NON alcoholic version?

Image

(Buzz In)

RedCoyote.

RedCoyote:
Virgin Bloody Mary.

The Virgin Mary, kin to the Bloody Mary, has all the same ingredients except the vodka. Correct for $10.

Image

(ding)

Moby Dick. Back to American literature - this time a novel -the White Whale calls forth images of pursuit and obsession. Who was the captain in pursuit?

Image

(Buzz In)

StrangerCoug.

StrangerCoug:
Ishmael.

Wrong character!

(buzzer)

Ishmael is the narrator of the story. Captain Ahab is the one in pursuit of Moby Dick. Which means we have to dock $10 off of your score.

Image

For the fashionable Victorian lady in 1870-1880's, where was the bustle?

Image

(Buzz In)

StrangerCoug.

StrangerCoug:
On her waist.

It's into the skirt rear and below the waist, but the judges are lenient enough to give you that for another $10, because you are right around that area.

Image

(ding)

And if you think "Baby Got Back" is the first time it was stylish to have a large derriere, you are wrong. The Victorians briefly had the same fascination. At its maximum size, the bustle consisted of a straw filled cushion sewn into the rear of the skirt, with a series of steel half hoops inserted in the skirt-lining down to the ground. This was bulky and heavy and had the effect of throwing the skirt out almost horizontally from waist-level in the back. Women appeared to have the cloth-encased hind legs of a horse. By the 1890's (thank goodness) fashion had moved on.

(Instant Bargain Time!)

Well, it's Instant Bargain time, and this time RedCoyote has the lead. A $30 lead, to be exact. Can we interest you in buying this?

Image

Serena:
Many of us can be lazy from time to time, but with this treadmill, you'll become more active and sharp than ever! The Body Solid T100 Endurance Cardio Commercial Walking Treadmill w/ LED Console. This is the heaviest duty treadmill ever to come from Endurance. Dealers and customers alike have asked for a bigger treadmill and we have listened. Built using a proven platform and technology, this treadmill will provide years of reliable and durable service. This is a perfect match for any light to medium usage commercial facility and can also be a great high end home piece.

It's normally priced at...

$3,895

but tonight on $ale of the Century, it could be yours for only...

$14

(audience applause)

DK: Ah, a nice treadmill. Certainly a one-of-a-kind. RedCoyote, this is a good prize, in my opinion. And also, consider this. Even if you buy this for $14, you'll still have a $16 lead over StrangerCoug, which is less than the value of 2 questions.

And, if you buy this treadmill, I'll throw in an extra
$850
in cash.

What do you say?

(Buzz-In)

And RedCoyote is going to buy!

(audience applause)

The treadmill and $850 in cash are both yours!

($ale Surprise!)

Oh! And a $ale Surprise!

(audience cheers)

RedCoyote, in additional to the Treadmill and the $850 cash, you're going to get an additional...

$ALE SURPRISE:
$5,950 CASH!!!

$5,950 in cold, hard cash!!

(audience cheers and applause)

That buy alone, is worth over $10,000 in cash and prizes! Well played, RedCoyote!

Image

And as promised, $14 is knocked off of your score, in which you now have a $16 lead over StrangerCoug.

Count your money later RedCoyote, because right now, it's time for your fantasies to be realized. You 3 players are joining a
ThreeWay.

Image

Image

OK, players. Here's how this Specialty Question works. You are going to see a ThreeWay like this one:

  • Game

    Set

    Match

Game Show: "_____ Game"

When you know what answer it is from the 3 words, buzz in and give me the word. The buzz-in will come in a first-come, first-served basis; no buzzcodes.

If it's the right match...

  • Game

    Set

    Match

You'll score $10.

Fix a Broken Bone

But watch out, because if you are wrong...

  • Game

    Set

    Match

You'll lose $10...

  • Game

    Set

    Match

EVERY time you're wrong!

And be careful: Individual answers don't necessarily have anything to do with the ThreeWay as a group.

And here we go.

The category for this ThreeWay is:

You're An Animal!

And that means you'll be joined by these bunch of animals:

Lions

Tigers

Bears

Oh my!

(audience laughs)

Now, let's start seeing the goods. Let's hope you're up to it. Remember, this is a first-come, first-served basis, so when you think you know it, buzz in and pick one of the words as your answer on the next post.
