Okay, that was terrible. Are they an Olympic powerhouse as well?
A nice high red line for you, so I suspect if the discs start moving, you're through.

Sadly one person stopped you from having a Pointless answer. They've actually won more than both Australia and Sweden with 167—more than any other country that has never hosted the Games.
That brings your final score to
138
.
N
, it looks like we're sadly going to be saying goodbye to you at the end of the round, but give us an amazing answer to leave here in a blaze of glory.
Were they able to win enough medals before capitalism turned them into a bunch of -stans? Let's find out.
You aren't bad at Mish Mash, you just got an unlucky category. I'm sure there are all sorts of categories in which you could score less than 10 points; movies just happened to not be one of those.

28
is not a bad result at all! The Soviets only competed in 9 Games, but their domination was enough to put them second all-time with an astonishing 395. They still have more gold medals in gymnastics, wrestling, weightlifting, canoeing, volleyball and handball than any other country.
That brings your final score to
262
.
Cybele
, feel free to talk us through your mind as you're the last to go this round.
Okay, so I'm guaranteed to stay in the game, which is definitely a load of stress off of this question. And I can't possibly get a 'better' position for later questions by beating xofelf, but maybe, if I get below 18, I can avoid being last in the next round. So there's a goal for me. It seems to me that these questions were asked to a british audience, so they'll have the most awareness of european countries, and besides, a lot of the surer answers in that area are gone now. In fact, Italy was my go-to second option up to the point that someone else snatched it. So I think I'll try for something elsewhere.
Summer Olympics. It stands to reason that maybe some african countries could do really well here, especially in track categories, but on the other hand, I'm not sure if they've participated in enough games to have that kind of showing yet. I think I'll try for something in asia, so maybe China, India or Japan?
Ehhhhhhh..... let's try Japan.
They've hosted once before and will again in 2020, but did they get enough gold to make it on the list?
You're already through, so no red line for you.

, exactly one-tenth of the number of gold medals they've earned. Their best sport is judo, but they also have strong gymnastics and wrestling programmes.
That brings your final score to
133
, and by five points you do get the middle position next round.
Now let's see what some other possible answers were.
The three highest-scoring answers:
85
United States of America - They've won 976, a full two and a half times more than the Soviet Union in second place.
72
Russia - They've only been in 5 Games, but they've won 133 gold medals.
65
China - They had a great showing in Beijing, and have 209 medals in 9 appearances.
And on the other end, most of the low-scoring ones have been picked, but two that hadn't:
2
Finland - Sydney pushed them to exactly 100, and they won one in Beijing since then.
7
East Germany - Only five games before the Berlin Wall fell, but that was enough for 153 medals.
Strangely enough, the public didn't seem to have much faith in Team GB, as it would have scored you
Congratulations on making it to Round II!
All scores have been reset to zero, for good or for bad, you all have a fresh slate going into this round.
Our first category is
LITERARY TITLE CHARACTERS
.
We're going to give you two lists of six literary characters, and you have to tell us how they are described in a title of a famous book. Some of these characters have appeared in more than one book, we're just looking for the title of the
first
book they appeared in.
Harry Lime
Bilbo Baggins
Cedric Errol
Valentine and Proteus
Quasimodo
Lisbeth Salander
xofelf
, give us the first answer, please. (After you, the order is Cybele and then cuddlycaucasian).
Choose which of the six items you want to answer—and remember, we're looking for the
most obscure
, but if it's wrong, it scores the maximum 100 points!
Xalxe: this is xofelf sometimes we call each other names and other times we share emotions
MattyP: Ur an enigma tho when it comes to circadian rhythm and the traditions we hold dear when it comes to the sun and the moon Get to reknow a xofelf here

Bilbo Baggins is definitely from Lord of the Rings, meaning I'm pretty sure The Hobbit is the first book he appeared in. Quasimodo is Hunchback of Notre Dame. I've never heard of Harry Lime, but luckily my movie knowledge somewhat carries over to this round, so I believe Lisbeth Salander is from
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
.
Lifestyle of watching movies instead of reading books, don't fail me now!
"CC is very [whatever the equivalent of photogenic as it applies to videos]" - racefan12
"CC is an objectively attractive person." - Crazy
"You look like a happy version of Trent Reznor." - LicketyQuickety
"Do you practice sounding like you're high all the time?" - xofelf
isn't too bad, but I was expecting better from the Family. The Don is probably better known for his films than the books by Mario Puzo.
That puts your total for this round at 57.
Cybele
, your shot at the five remaining.
Athos, Porthos and Aramis
Michael Henchard
Oliver Mellors
Count Almasy
Homily, Arietty and Pod
Well, shoot. I was hoping to take the Borrowers.. hm.. okay..
I know more or less where all the 3 come from.. it's just picking the more obscure one.. hmmmm...
I think I'm going to go with...
Count Almasy: The English Patient
Xalxe: this is xofelf sometimes we call each other names and other times we share emotions
MattyP: Ur an enigma tho when it comes to circadian rhythm and the traditions we hold dear when it comes to the sun and the moon Get to reknow a xofelf here
