I enjoy 3.5 and PF, but right now I'm in the mood for simpler gameplay. This summer I might join a PF or 3.5 campaign, but while school's going, I'm sticking with 5.

Summary of Christmas One-off

Party = Human Monk, Human Monk, Dwarf Ranger, Dwarf Barbarian/Ranger, Halfling Bard

The party went down the hallway past the ominous looking statues, deeper into the tomb of Mira. They found a spell circle, a set of glyphs on the floor. The bard realized that it was what the ancient tomb workers used to protect the tomb. It was currently inactive, but if something set it off, it would warn the denizens of the tomb of intruders. While they were examining, a number of lightning-using bats dropped down from the ceiling. Party chopped through them quickly, but more and more of them appeared from the corridors around them. The monk got separated, and got zapped into negatives. Fortunately, their Barbarian/Ranger was highly optimized to chop down small and large beasts alike, and he cleared the airspace fast enough for the bard to go stabilize the dying monk.

They found armories. Someone had already took the weapons from them. They traveled down and discovered the bodies of the people they were supposed to rescue. They dragged the bodies out and travel deeper into the tomb, where they fought off multiple skeleton archers and zombies. The newer players panicked and ran, but the Barbarian/Ranger and the Bard tank and spanked their way through the minions and chopped them down. At this juncture, they discovered the source of the negative energy they've been tasked to find, and realized that they needed to kill whatever the creature that opened the rift to close the portal. They travel further and fight off some fire elementals. Then they discover a library, where they realized how to get to the sarcophagus of Mira. They set the statues straight, and they head into the tomb, only to have the demon follow them in and kill Mira. The demon melted the barbarian's weapons, but the monk managed to punch out the demon before his fists melted and banish it back to the abyss where it came from.

tl dr. Party was composed of bunch of newbies at first, but a powergamer showed up to carry their heavy asses with his double dwarven waraxe rhino hide charge build, along with a selfless girl who picked a Bard healbot to fill every other role needed by the party and help the party survive. Newbies shit their pants while the powergamer chopped shit down and bard kept them alive. Classic tank and spank all the way to the endgame.

Seconded. Assuming yer man pops up at the Ball and we dimdoor in, do you think guards at the Ball will cause us trouble? I suppose once there, we could grab the second scroll and dimdoor back out or whatever. Also, we need some way to signal to either party segment to use their scroll.

If the guards cause us trouble we can always just leave normally once we're done.

And I assume that there's some way of viewing the ball from the lighthouse, like, a good telescope or something meaning that all we need is a way for the airborne division to signal the ground division, we probably don't need the reverse.

Hana casts alarm on a certain spot of the lighthouse before going to the ball. If Izzie shows up, one of us moves into that spot.

If there isn't a nice telescope I can learn+cast clairvoyance.

Wait no I can't, casting time of 10 minutes and duration of 1 min/level. And level 3 so I can't burn through it.

Enduring Scrutiny. Could be used just like Alarm.

Few things:

Just because a random NPC said it was a good idea doesn't mean split party is a good idea. It's the most common way PCs die.
Dim. door off a scroll can only take the caster and 2 other people.
There is a direct, uninterrupted line of sight between the Ball and the Lighthouse. They are about 1000 ft apart.
The Ball and the hill it's on are Rainsberg property; the Lighthouse is city-owned.
All of the police captains were invited to the Ball. Gundabog declined. Cedar Islow is going. Jin has not decided.
Izzy is targeting someone at the Ball. Halle does not know who.

If we have two dim doors, the party's only split for one round.

Also, does uninterrupted line of sight mean we can see? Like, do we have good enough eyesight to make out Izzie 1000 feet away?

Presumably he'd take measures to disguise himself so I'd doubt it

Alternatively, we all go to the lighthouse and still have two dim door scrolls so that we can go to the ball if he goes there but the party will never be split.

I like that actually, since I'm pretty sure he'll be there. Only issue is, if he does go to the ball, can we get in in time to prevent the assassination?

Normal time is 3-6 EST. you sure you didn't mean some other time zone? I definitely can't make the time you gave, not sure if I can make half an hour before usual time there are some things I need to figure out. If I can't make half an hour before usual time I won't get there until half an hour after usual time.
