I'm curious why Mecca and the Kaaba where grouped together, but St. Peter's Basilica and Vatican City weren't.

Primarily because the Sistine Chapel is also in the Vatican and is not the same thing as St. Peter's Basilica. I'm open to discussion as to whether all three should be grouped together, but it won't affect the lowest score.

I almost joined Ircher on Stonehenge using that reasoning.
(In the end I just declared Vatican City as a whole a landmark, although that same thought I refused to allow myself to submit Mecca)

I had almost the same thought process, down to considering answering Stonehenge and not wanting to say Mecca because isn't that like a whole damn city? In the end I had to remind myself that it's about what other people are gonna say, not what's highly accurate, and went with it.

If I could tell you were referring to Christ the Redeemer, then yes, I would have. Datisi wasn't sure of the English name of the Wailing Wall, so I used the Croatian name he gave me to figure out what he was trying to say.
