Re: The Newbie Queue

At 118 pages it's a little daunting thinking that you have to go and read every page.

Perhaps the thread could be closed and a new one started?

I'm gonna stick up (a bit) for Twito here. In 293 there wasn't much input and that was the game he didn't read the role PM.

I think he's doing much better in 303 (My current game). Of course, I am basing this on comparison with Blackberry who seems to be invisible atm.

There's no comparison with SV who was in 293 with me though! She's a goddess in a black hole!

We should put 2 IC's, 4 Newbies and 1 Idiot into every Newbie game.

Also, I'll agree that the Newbie list needs to get clearer. I would argue an announcement at the top of the queue forum redirecting to the newbie thread and big bold redirections at the top of every other queue thread.

Edit: Thanks for the compliment, Finchy.

It's very important that you don't discuss on-going games outside the thread. This is expressly stated in the RULES section in Newbie 303 and in every other game.

There's no harm done here, but you can normally expect to be modkilled if you do this in a non-Newbie game.

Mr Stoofer, Sir, I apologise. I realise that it could look that way but I haven't seen Blackberry on the forum for a couple of days, hence the comment. I would absolutely expect to be modkilled if I had, but I didn't think I had. Many thanks for your understanding. Sir. ;)

strongly disagree.

newbies are there to familiarise people with the game mechanics and etiquette, and give them a taste of a simplified version of the game.

we don't teach people about roleblockers, masons, cults etc in newbie games, because that's an unnecessary layer of complication and would get in the way of the purpose of the newbie game.

ics are there to help noobs understand these issues and to focus on what's relevant and what isn't - the entire purpose of ics is to demonstrate and educate on good mafia habits. idiotic or (worse) destructive play undermines the concept of the newbie game and as such, ics who aren't approaching the noob game from the right angle shouldn't be in noob games.

one idiotic play can totally ruin a game. check out newbie 298 for an example.
hey, a sig!

QFT.
I think that if newbies are serious about playing the game properly, they would go and look it up themselves - I got almost all I know of complicated roles thanks to mikeburnfire's flash things.

And yet to do. This world is just a horrible place.

I got introduced to mafia through another game. On my first games I were a natural. Then I game to this site and almost decided to quit playing mafia entirely or atleast on this page. :P

See I'm helpful!
CDB wrote:Idiocy as an IC is difficult to define. I mean, I'd classify both Twito and Fritzler as idiots, but Fritzler still looks like he's playing mafia. Twito, as he says himself, doesn't seem to care. If you're playing as an IC I think you've got to do it seriously.
I'd like to think I'm adding more content and putting more effort on playing than Fritz. I prolly also fool around more but that's beside the point.

I'd like to argue that IC's actually get attacked for helping out newbies.. :P

That's something that might be worth institutionalizing, as something for the mod and/or the ICs to do.

Yes, it's very much overdue, and that's an error on my part. I should probably even be doing it more often than for the other Queue threads.

And if people want to be nostalgic about their first Scum experience, I broke my first game by proposing what led to a mass claim Day 1. But that was a themed mini before there were themed minis back in the Bronze Age or so (2003).

My first Newbie game, I worked out the breaking strategy for day 2 that would give us a 90% chance of instant win, with 10% chance of, well, playing it out.

Day broke.

Mathcam posted the very same breaking strategy first.

My first newbie game was one of the early C9 games. I was scum and talked myself into being lynched day 1. Fortunately I managed to post enough to make town go after the doc and a townie day 2, and my partner was able to pull out a win day 3.

I believe it was also Yosarian2's first newbie.
I replaced into Chess Mafia for 6 months, and all I got was a win and this lousy sig.

Yup, that was my first newbie on the site. Newbie 101, I think.

(rereads) Ah, nostalgia.

I think that might also have been d_rouge's first game, too. That's really neat.

My first newbie, I was the cop, claimed, was counterclaimed by the doc, who was promptly lynched day 1. Needless to say, the game was a colossal failure for the town.

That's the one. Newbie '73 IIRC.
