Balderdash (the Dictionary Game)

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Fri Sep 19, 2003 3:30 pm

Post by Kelvin »

I shall use my favorite word of all time to start us:
ultracrepidarian
.

-----
random.org gives me the following list of player order in submitting votes, here in the thread:
  • Sugar
    Talitha
    shadyforce
    rite
    PBuG
    Kerplunk
    mathcam
    Dourgrim
    Norinel
    MeMe
The entries, random.org-ized, are:

Ultacrepidarian
, df:=

A. An animal that circulates blood through large ears to regulate body temperature.

B. One who compulsively studies and/or documents rainbows.

C. One who collects and reads books written in Latin or ancient Greek.

D. One who is over a hundred years of age.

E. One who practices conservation of physical movement.

F. One who speaks about subjects of which he does not know enough to speak.

G. One who is in possession of too much of a commodity.

H. One (usu. M.D.) who rates levels of supercreepiness.

I. Having the quality of quick decay; ageing more quickly than other objects.

J. One who twitches excessively while asleep.

K. One unable to walk due to insufficient bone strength.

-----
Everyone wishing to play should submit something to me via PM or email by Wednesday the 24th. The selection of answers will be posted the 25th.

Points: 1 point for choosing the correct one amongst the answers submitted, and 1 point for everyone who believes your definition.

DP wrote down some rules here, but note the difference in scoring.

(Almost) Needless to say, anyone knowing the definition of
ultracrepidarian
shouldn't play, and anyone playing shouldn't look up the definition.

Also I see little need to limit ourselves to one round. Therefore I shall designate my successor with a gold star when I announce points resolution; people wishing to be considered for this high and lonely honor ought to indicate that they do without coercion (I'm looking at you here, rite). Hopefully everyone will continue to play and we can all take a turn as ref, leaving us with a comparable (or not!) set of scores.

If you are familiar with ultracrepidarian, please inform me; if there are lots, we'll have a different and hopefully better word.

Thank you, rite and Norinel. Kerplunk, I've not received your entry as yet.

(I'm looking at you because of you sordid, manipulative, and bloodstained past rite; or maybe that's someone else. . . .)

The dictionary game version is a subgame of beyond balderdash, though with admittedly fewer words. It's fun to get some variety in there.

I definitely think we have to post in the thread, in a random order that Kelvin determines. Part fo the strategy is seeing who other people vote for and then changing your mind based on that. Along with that, voting for yourself is sometimes a strategy. It sucks to go first, but hopefully we'll play enough of these that it all balances out in the end.

As I see it, we have 10 players. In order of receipt of PM:
  • Sugar
    Dourgrim
    MeMe
    shadyforce
    PBuG
    Talitha
    rite
    Norinel
    mathcam
    Kerplunk

J. One who twitches excessively while asleep.

K. One unable to walk due to insufficient bone strength.

Please wait to submit your vote until the person before you on the list has submitted his.

An additional vote that I had forgotten we include is that one also votes for the definintion thought funniest, quirkiest, most interesting, or most clever (again for 1 pt per vote). I will not amend the rules at this late date without that my fellow players agree to the change; in lieu of barraging me with PMs or cluttering the thread unduly, if you wish to add this component, please include a second vote with your pick of which definition is correct.

The format for votes shall be to [
bold
]Vote: The letter you though correct[
/bold
], and (only if you wish to) [
italicize
]Nominate: The letter of the definition you thought funniest, cleverest, quirkiest, or most interesting[
/italicize
].

A word about the definitions: they have been edited slightly (for good or bad) to seem similar, but even the correct definition is not direct from the dictionary. Any mistakes are on my part, not those of the submission.

I should clarify that only if there in unanimity among players will the Amusement Election count.

to go first?! No?

I'm all for for the Amusement Election, but am wondering if we shouldn't use PMs for that one. And are we to nominate one definition for each of the suggested categories, or just pick one (funniest, cleverest, quirkiest, or most interesting)? Regardless, I'll wait until a few more people comment before posting my nomination(s) in the thread.

And Kelvin, you first had us define
ultra
crepidarian, but then changed it to
ulta
crepidarian! They are two
completely
different words.
I'm assuming you mean the former, though, so

I like the idea that the Election is private. It's something that's a bother IRL that isn't here. <Point to Sugar for a good idea>

None of them really stand out as being humourous as they are all quite good guesses.
