Setup Review Committee

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Sun Apr 22, 2007 3:28 pm

Post by stark »

Alright comrades, of my year or two or so of experience on this site, perhaps THE most obnoxious thing I have found is the amount of time it takes to get ones setup reviewed. What I propose is the foundation of a Setup Review Committee. The Committee would be composed of experienced players who are willing to contribute their time to help their fellow comrades tweak their setups, as is necessary in order to create an enjoyable game of mafia. Naturally, in order to distribute labour, volunteers could be in charge of specific types of games, such as large themes, small themes, large normal, small normal, and other things to that effect. In this way, the MafiaScum community can experience more quality games sooner, and everything is good for everyone.

Would anyone be interested in volunteering?

Great idea!

In fact, we should make this thread a sticky! Then maybe bump it three slots up and give it a snappy name like "Setup review."

That would be amazing.

Comrade Pie, if that was not sarcasm in your tone, forgive me.

The purpose of the establishment of this thread would be to reduce the amount of time between review and implementation of setups. As the setup thread stands now, review simply occurs when someone happens to stumble upon the thread, and even then it comes down to whether they want to or no. Using the method I am suggestion, MS will have a base of willing volunteers to review setups.

If you want a set-up reviewed, send a PM to an experienced player whose views you respect, asking them to review it.

One problem with having a 'set' committee of people to review is that you can inadvertently receive the setup to a game that you'd actually like to play, which ruins your chances. I've turned down several game setups because I actually would prefer to play when time comes around (Wheel of Time was a good example).

That said, I'm always willing to receive PMs asking, with the name of a setup but no details, so I can refuse. If the first post of the sticky Setup Review thread had those names, that might help speed things along...

Good idea.

Why don't you lock the existing thread, and start a new thread which has a front post as you suggest, listing those generally willing to look at set-ups. [You have the power, yes?]

Maybe a better idea is a list of experienced players who state that they are willing to review setups in depth. That was, a mod can PM any number of them asking if they would review the setup.

I should have clarified that it is totally possible to replace the current 24-page thread with a new one that is better organized, but that I don't personally have the powers to lock/desticky the old one. So yes, if someone wants to do so (I don't have the time, personally), I'd like to see a new thread that tracks both anytime-reviewers and theme names/designers of games who would like to be reviewed.

Otherwise, I think the current format works well.

You are right on the point of prefering to play a game rather than to review it. But perhaps we could reformat the existing Setup Review thread to incorporate High Wizards of Setup Review which are in charge of reviewing a certain setup should no one else do it, say after three or so days? The ideas suggested in the post above by Flay are also very good. All I would like to see is just a more efficient, faster setup review, but that might just be me.
