The messenger has an amount of backtracking similar to Metroid 1 or early Castlevania. Hollow knight has an large, over the top amount of backtracking. I guess the way I wrote my post suggested the messenger was deviating from expectations and yeah it is I think a lot of modern metroidvania design goes heavier on backtracking.

I feel like the backtracking is kinda what makes the quintessential metroidvania experience
most people kinda look to Super Metroid and SotN as the fundamental metroidvanias rather than the first of each series
also for a Metroidvania that doesn't really focus on backtracking like others, Samus Returns is a good example as it and the original are more linear in nature in terms of traversing each area
