I really doubt it's any more complicated than whoever places first gets their first pick, whoever places second gets the first pick of whatever is left, etc.

Well yes, but the timing was the absolute worst for it to happen.
Also, the odds of it happening twice is still 1/100.
(Crit chance is 1/16, not 1/10.)

The chance of it happening at least once out of 7 hits is 52% (1 - 0.9^7). Not sure of the math to calculate getting hit twice though (it's not 1/100)

Which might i add why their are even more Beta testers nowadays (Though it's also the reason a lot of games on PC go to beta first publicly, which i think is lazy and shit)

Costs a lot less money for the public to test then to hire thousands of QA. Can't test servers properly without it.

But muliplayer games are the games that use the open beta system the most which is why I mention it.

A game (single or multiplayer) is a lot easier to debug if you get solid repro cases, and a lot of competent testers help that. It's not lazy to want to get your game out there and try make it better.
