MAFIA SCUM TOOLS is finally released!!!

As promised, I have released Mafia Scum Tools version 1.0. This features all of the changes from the development versions, and a nicer layout of the code.

For those not familiar with this project, it provides the following features. It:
- Randomly allocates a name to a title, which are specified throught the input process
- Allows users to specify the names and titles immediately from a list of names, each on a new line, which makes it easy to copy from forums, such as this one.
- Displays data in a format suitable to copying back into a forum
- Alerts you of any errors that have occured, which makes it less likely for you to make a mistake.
- Is free, with a GPL license.
- Can be hosted on YOUR site as well, just follow the link at the bottom of this post, or the mafia scum tool's footer.

To try out this client, go here: http://users.quickfox.org/~nerd-network/mafia/
To download the source and run it on your own server, go here: http://users.quickfox.org/~nerd-network/
**These servers may be a little slow, due to quickfox's popularity.

NOTE TO ALL: If anyone is willing to mirror the download files on a reasonably fast server, please let me know.

NOTE TO JEZ, MITH AND ANY OTHER DEV'S: You are more than welcome to run this on your server, seeing as I made it for this forum in particular.

IF THERE ARE ANY PROBLEMS WITH IT, PLEASE POST THEM HERE ASAP!

Hmmm.... Sounds like QuickFox.org was down (again). It's working again now.

Has anyone else had any troubles with it?

Is anyone still interested?

Hey, pretty cool. I'll probably use for it modding chat games if nothing else.

Thanks... That's the first real bit of feedback I've had since I released version 1.0  .

Everyone please remember that I would like to hear of suggestions too.

Yeah, I always use it for chat games, but I haven't started a full game since it's completion. It's cool.

I used it for a couple of chat games actually. It worked very effectively.

Here's a suggestion. One way that I like to run games is to randomly distribute roles from a superset.

For example, I'd like to have a "deck" of 2 cop roles, 2 doc roles, 10 townie, and 4 mafia, or something like this. Then when I specify that there are 7 players, it should randomly pick 7 of these roles and assign them.

So my suggestion is that if there are more roles than players, randomly pick a subset of them (equal in size to the number of players) and then match up roles and players as usual.

It looks like it already does that, just not very prettily.

mathcam: If I understand what you want correctly, I see a problem. What happens if it doesn't specify any cops? Or mafia scum? It is feasible that it might exclude them. If you clarify your idea, I will be more than happy to attempt to incorporate it.

Thanks for all the feedback guys  .

how about making it so at least one of everything is included, then random distribution afterward.

Norinel, it tells me I have too many roles to be distributed, unless you found a neat way of bypassing this.

Nerd: No cops is fine, but the mafia would indeed be a problem. I guess this is more elaborate a suggestion that I originally, thought, then. If you wanted to do this full force, though, you could specify a range for each role...

Between 1 and 2 cops.
Between 1 and 1 docs.
Between 2 and 4 mafia.
Between 6 and 10 townies,
with a total of 12 people.

And then run an algorithm which randomly assigns the roles within those parameters.

Again, this isn't a huge deal, but if you're looking for something to do...

You can use sourceforge.net as a distribution point.

Lord Gurgi:

That is very easy to put in, but it could annoy a few people. By leaving it unset, it allows people an easier task of putting other values in. If you press "Validate and Submit Data", any number field that isn't entered into becomes 0. If the majority of people out there want it, I can make this 1.

When I put javascript validation into the code, it disallowed this. It will be a minor change to make it a query instead of an alert. If you want this, let me know.

If I made the change specified above, this would be obselete. The problem with this suggestion is that it allows for a greater human error. However, with the query above, it should then work fine.

You can use sourceforge.net as a distribution point.
Should I? It is up to you as the reader to decide. Is this project big enough to be hosted there? :?:

A project doesn't have to be big to be distributed from sourceforge.

Ok

The copy of the tools hosted on sf.net isn't working, it's complaining about missing files.

If you'd like a hand, drop me a pm or im, I've been on a few sf.net projects and know my way around there decently. And I'm a big, big PHP geek.

The front page loads up fine, but when I click "Mafia Scum Tools" from the list at the left, the main frame reloads to read:
Warning: Failed opening 'rand-gen/mafia.php' for inclusion (include_path='.:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/groups/a/ad/adv-random-gen/htdocs/index.php on line 52

Hey! :)

Sorry for my delayed message, but as you might have noticed (if you read the news on the site), I have lost the use of my computer for quite a while now, and have not been able to remedy the problem. Even now, I cannot - seeing as I am using my dad's computer, and my files are on my 200GB hd which was in my (now deceased) computer.

I will fix the problem ASAP (most likely shortly after New Year).

I'm glad you like the utilty too.

Regards,
Matthew (Nerd Nation Admin <- Notice change in name)
