The Agency


A Mafia game for 13 players

Keeping the country safe from subversive foreign elements is the job of the Agency.

However, we all know that when they are not toppling dictators, assassinating peaceniks, or catching other spies, they spend their time listening in on your phone calls and following you around in their black helicopters and souped-up Escalades and watching you in the shower.

The time has come to end their black ops tyranny.

*In the shadowy world of espionage, trust no one. Including the mod. This is a bastard game to include

ONE: FUNDAMENTALS
I) All site-wide rules apply. Read and respect them.
II) There is no personal communication outside the forum postings (regarding this game) unless your role specifically allows it.
III) Do not quote your Role PM or any private communication (either real or fabricated) with the moderator, co-moderator, backup-moderator, or fellow players. Paraphrasing your Role PM is acceptable. If you are unsure that something is paraphrased enough, check with the mod.
IV) Be courteous and respectful to all your fellow players and the moderating team.
V) Play to your Win Condition.

TWO: DAY PHASE (DP)
I) Each DP shall have a two week deadline. Day 1 will have a 21 day deadline.
II)
Votes must be bolded or they shall not be counted
. This includes the word "Vote", along with the players name. Abbreviating someone's name is acceptable, so long as I can discern who you were voting for without trouble.
III) Unvoting is encouraged, but not required.
IV) Once you have reached a simple majority (half of all living players plus one) that person's fate is sealed and they shall be lynched. Unvoting cannot change their fate.
V) If a simple majority (half of all living players plus one) approve a No Lynch (Vote: No Lynch), then no player shall be lynched and the game shall enter Night Phase. If deadline is reached and no one has received a simple majority of the votes, no one shall be lynched.
VI) Once a player is lynched the game enters twilight until I arrive and post a death scene. All players may continue to post during Twilight.
VII) Prods: Day1-Day3 If you have failed to post for over 60 hours, I will send you a prod. Failure to respond to this prod within 60 hours will result in the replacement of that player.
Day4 on: If you have failed to post for over 48 hours, I will send you a prod. Failure to respond to this prod within 48 hours will result in the replacement of that player.
Force-replacing of flakers/rule-breakers will occur at my discretion.
VIII) If half of the living players post "
@Mod: Requesting Deadline Extension
", the request will be granted. The amount of time will vary at the mods disgression. This rule may only be used once per game. Other extensions, if any, will occur at my discretion.
IX) Votes and Unvotes shall not count in Twilight.

THREE: NIGHT PHASE (NP)
I) NP shall last 48-72 hours.
II) Any role or faction with night abilities may choose to use them by PM-ing the mod with their choice.
III) If no action is received, no action will be taken. All actions received after the deadline has passed will not be valid.
IV) If multiple actions are received, the last one received will be valid.
V) Night Action submissions will be accepted starting in the Twilight Phase.

FOUR: CAPITAL OFFENSES
I) Do not quote your Role PM or any private communication (either real or fabricated) with the moderator, co-moderator, or backup-moderator. Paraphrasing your Role PM is acceptable.
II) There is to be no personal communication outside the forum postings (regarding this game) unless your role specifically allows it.

III) I will use the color BLUE for mod stuff outside of my posts. Posts originally made by me will vary in color.

IV) The following is a list of outlawed shenanigans:

Using invisible text, codes, cryptography, etc.
Editing your posts (if you have the power to do so)
Insulting other players
Quoting any QTs you may have access to (paraphrasing is acceptable)
Breaking hydra-status if you are a hydra
Posting in-thread after you have died- one BAH allowed

If any of these offenses are committed, I have the right to force-replace you from the game or modkill you. A warning will usually come before replacement or modkilling, depending on the severity of the infraction.

FIVE: MISCELLANEOUS
I) Feel free to address me in-thread, but if there is a large egregious mistake please PM me. Small matters like errors in the votecount can be posted in-thread.
II) I have the final say on any issue. I reserve the right to force-replace and modkill at my will.
III) This is a game. Have fun, and keep the game fun for other people. Stay civilized, please.
IV) I have the right to edit this RuleSet at any time, alerting you when I do.
V) Any groups with quick topics may use them as indicated in their role PM. Please note that all QTs will be released at game end, so please leave out anything you don't want made public.

The governments of our world's nations run there country, and they have the military to provide the muscle they need when they need it.

But sometimes, a lighter touch is needed. That's where the intelligence agencies come in. They exert the force of the government's will without having to resort to all that force.

Lately, however, these agencies seem to be operating on their own, with no accountability that every other person has when it comes to their job. Especially given the sensitive nature of their roles in national security and the amount of harm they can do to our nation's relations to other countries, it's time they were were reined in, and their organization made more transparent. Murders and torture cannot be symbols of the relationship between our country and the next. As a matter of fact-

Abuses. Grabbing your various legal documents (guarantors of immunity to prosecution, Witness Protection application, etc.), you rush over to the address that was left in a scratchy voice on your voicemail.
You see your peers pull up at the same time you do, but none of you can get too close....

Dateline: Washington, DCTragedy struck today as an airliner carrying 178 passengers came down over Brazil today. The plane was on fire when it landed, and there was no radio contact prior to the emergency landing.

It was a short but eventful day. At the end, everyone gathered together at the designated meeting spot.

Using his connections in the worldwide military and recreational arms supply network, shos finds a safe location and holes up for the night. There is some ruckus, but the guards quickly take care of it, and shos doesn't even wake up.

The next day, shos and EmpKing plan their Grand Reveal. All of the intelligence agencies have been thwarted, and with the information they've gathered, the people can take over control of their governments once again.

They hole up in a hardened, double-titanium reinforced bomb shelter, strong enough to withstand a direct nuclear warhead hit by a 50 megaton nuclear missile.

It's got enough food for them for weeks, and the oxygen supply is a double redundant system with filtered air from hidden vents miles from the entrance.

The water supply is underground, and secret, and also generates all the electricity they would ever need.

They work on their masterpiece, a full report on all of the ills and crimes perpetrated by the criminal agencies in the name of "freedom".

As it nears completion, and the food is running low, and their patience with each other is stretched to the breaking point, the plan their final day, and their moment of glory.

shos wakes up and thankfully downs the coffee EmpKing made for him. He hears EmpKing moving around on the other side of the shelter, and glad for the alone time, gets up to pack his own stuff for their grand exit.

As he heads to the front entrance, he hears a low metallic clang as the entrance to the shelter closes up. Jogging to the door, he finds it locked from the outside.

The low feeling of dread inside him turns to full-fledged panic as the lights dim and go out. The air blasting from the vents slows to a trickle and dies with a final hiss. In the darkness, he starts pounding in the dark on the double-titanium door. But, as his screams become more ragged, and his gulping breathing more labored, he realizes -

Special Rules:
The communications specialist went to the post count for the day in question.
Day1=highest
Day2=2nd highest
Day3=3rd highest
Day4=4th highest

They could submit a word or phrase and receive the usage in the QTs

If they were lynched, they were immune to NK the following night.

The Insert ability from the Dead Thread allowed dead players to post a message in either the thread or their team QT up to 25 words, as long as it was sufficiently "cryptic".

Good game in any case, sorry I was getting really tired of playing Mafia at the end there, I'll admit the last day probably could've been played out better.

If shos was lynched Day 6, then Day7 would have been shos, Emp, and you. If he was lynched again, then it would go into night, and presumably you two would shoot each other. If you did, then town would have won. If one shot shos n6, and the other shot the other, we'd have a day with shos+1, and the same endgame would occur.

As it finished out with Super-shos, who would be killed by EmpKing night7 turning into regular shos, but neither side would vote themselves, leaving the next NK belonging to EmpKing.

My original thought was to do a secret agent theme, but I also like the concept of the uninformed majority. But, I wanted to try an uniformed minority, but felt 2 scum teams would be enough.

However, there has to be a town. Each town was named and had a role name, so they weren't VT, but didn't want a mass claim/exodus of confirmed town when a lynch failed. I think town did a good job of coming to that conclusion, but enough element of doubt remained so it wouldn't break the game.

And the town kill protection I thought would even out all of the bullets flying around.

Secret agents recruit, and the best stories are about double agents, or playing both sides, so I added recruitment as an option. I was surprised that all 3 groups didn't take advantage of it, but they did have to give up a NK for it.

Paranoia being a key factor in all good Ludlum novels, I wanted the teams to experience some of the paranoia, so included the line about trusting no one (this was also a reference to the fact if a teammate was recruited, they would have divided loyalties). I upped the paranoia a little when I only gave the rolenames in the QTs.

However, I think I overcranked that aspect, as QT activity was extremely light, and communication became sparse. The result was that the players didn't even know each other in the the QTs. Was not expecting that, but I';m glad it created the tension I was looking for.

The Communications specialist role would be the first time any player would find out more than one QT existed. Incredible luck that it happened to fall to Matt. Twice.
The following days, talk was light, so no results were gotten.
I do like the attempts at thwarting the eavesdropping attempts. I guess that's why secret codes were invented in the first place. :lol:

Props to saulres at becoming the only double agent in the game. The fact he was CIA director and became an FBI agent made me laugh, but he made a good attempt at keeping both sides going. His Miley Cyrus effect was to stop him from dominating the game by killing off teammates and keeping the factional kill abilities, but this was tempered by the fact individual agents could submit night actions.

I think that's the bulk, I'll check my notes if I have more.
