Trying to figure out which one to buy. I ran Linux-only for years, am now back on a dual-boot system with enough RAM to do CRPGs justice.

Arena is good if you want to hack and slash your way through an endless supply of enemies and don't care about graphics or awkward controls. Takes some getting used to, but the combat is really fun and it's easy to just waste some time killing things without worrying about quests and stuff.

Finally bought into the cosmetic microtransactions for Path of Exile. I've certainly gotten my $20 of enjoyment out of the game, flawed as it is, and now my Witch has a Poison Frog to follow her around.

Above all the other awful stuff in this system, the most perplexing thing is that they're focusing on cable TV so much. Cable is dying a slow and painful death as people begin to use Netflix, Hulu Plus, or network websites to watch their shows for far cheaper than cable TV. So why make it such a strong focus of the system? Netflix and Hulu Plus are good things to have on the Xbox One, but certainly not the main thing there. No one is going to buy a $400+ console to watch TV. If anyone does, they're downright stupid. They could watch the same content on their existing computers or, if they prefer cable, using a cable box that they already pay for and would still have to pay for even if they get the Xbox One.

To be fair, nobody has ever accused Microsoft of being forward-thinking.

More to the point, I don't feel like a feminist-friendly game requires a female protagonist.

Absolutely true. But having more than just FemShep (who by most accounts is a pretty solid/equal character, with reasonable clothing options) would be nice. Identifying with the protagonist is nice. People recognizing that women also play video games (and no, not just Bejeweled) is nice.

And yes, having non-sex-object NPCs is also important. I do like how Path of Exile more or less seems to have determined who gets pants at random, regardless of gender.

But also because she used Kickstarter funds intended for "reasearch and equipment" to buy a shitload of video games, some of which she purchased multiple copies of, and many more that had absolutely nothing to do with her thesis, and she already owned studio recording equipment and every console. She then released a video that proved she actually did 0 research, several months after her Kickstarter deadline. Then she disables comments on all her Youtube videos until she releases one that she knows will be controversial, enables them on all her videos, reports people for being sexist, then disables comments again once her hits begin to climb back up.

Who gives a ^*(*%$* if she had multiple copies of the games (assuming that's even true)? The point was to raise $6,000 to increase the quality of her videos. She's done that, and expanded the series. It's Kickstarter, not a bank loan. You're not owed an explanation of what she's using the overage funds for; as long as she satisfies the requirements of her backers (including stretch goals) and pays her taxes, she's good.

Even IF what you say is true, every word of it, it in no way justifies the level of hate and vitriol she receives for her project.

And all of those internet precogs who just KNEW the Kickstarter campaign was a scam, and that's why they had to make rape/death threats and a game about punching her and and and... yeah I'm done with you here.

Stereotypes and gender roles of women and stereotypes and gender roles of men are two sides of the same coin. One can't exist without the other, and you can't effectively point out one while entirely ignoring the other.

All true (Google "kyriarchy" for more information). But that's not the same thing as saying that gender stereotypes and tropes are equally harmful for both sides, ESPECIALLY in video games. The male tropes empower the (presumably male) player. The female tropes objectify or belittle the female player, character, NPC, etc.

To be fair, I think a large amount of people would play as the second panel because of how absurd it is. Consider the "sex appeal" option on Saints Row 3. Was there a single player who didn't turn that up to the max?

TBF, I would play with that slider all over the place. I love that they even HAVE a "B-cup" option.

Saints Row 3 is free on Steam for the weekend. Also, if you pick it up (or already have it), you can preorder Saints Row 4 this weekend for 10% off. Highly recommend that series - it's fantastic.

Been playing this, originally passed the game off as a GTA clone/parody, but HOLY SHIT IT IS FUN. I get it now, GTA aims to be cool and edgy, SR3 tries to be fun and goofy. Does the game stay this fun after the first hour or two?

3 is kind of gimmicky but it has enough gimmicks to get it through the game. 2 is (in my opinion) a much better game that balances its goofiness out with some reasonably good dramatic elements in its storyline (as opposed to SR3 which is entirely played for comedy purposes) and a minigame in which you literally spray shit at people's houses.

Has 2 aged well? Granted the last game in this genre I played was Mafia: City of Lost Heaven, so anything is likely to look solid to me, but I'm entirely amused by everything I've read this week about SR3.

This would be on PC, not console, if it matters.

I've never played, but it seems like the stable of Pokemon is overgrown as it is. A thousand tiny gradations of Charizard-Prime doesn't seem interesting or useful.

It would seem that adding to/messing with the typing system would be more interesting, but again that probably leads to proliferation of monsters.
