Yeah, I used the Pokemon Amie to get Sylveon and then pretty much never touched it again. The EV training was something I used a little bit of but was more like an annoying minigame I felt obligated to play to have a competitive(-ish) team than anything.

I think they've released exclusivity lists, in which case you could probably find it on serebii. I'm not sure though because I deliberately try to stay as in-the-dark as possible about new releases until about a week before release. I get more excited for it that way.

I actually never played Ruby or Sapphire, but I easily logged several hundred hours and multiple playthroughs of Emerald. I hope it lives up to the nostalgia.

Oh hey, by the way, I have an unused demo code up for grabs if anyone still needs one. Totally forgot about it until now. I know the game comes out real soon, but apparently you can get some small goodies from the demo if you play it for a couple hours.

Yes and no. The core mechanics are essentially the same. I would describe it as the same core but with so many small innovations here and there over the years that it's a much more complex game now. Lots of new pokemon (we're at almost 800 now), some new types, some new mechanics, new ways to battle (2v2, 1v5, etc)... But the great thing is, if you want it to be simple, the main story will still be about as simple to get through as it was in the older games. You don't need to master every little thing to do well. But if you want to beat harder stuff later (like human opponents, or difficult post-game battles) you can definitely sink a lot of time into learning all the little things and min-maxing your team.

If you really want to examine all the changes for yourself, bulbapedia is a great resource and can probably explain things better than I can. These pages can give you an overview of some of the biggest changes from generation to generation.

It was made a lot easier in X/Y (Gen 6), so I imagine it won't be too difficult in ORAS either. It's not instantaneous like (I think) Smogon is, but it's a lot less of a pain than it used to be. There's an item (Destiny Knot) that allows for 5 of the parents' 12 IVs to be passed down, making breeding much less time consuming. EV training can be done quickly with either a training minigame or with horde (1v5) battling, as of X/Y. Depending on how complicated your breeding is (do you want it in a certain ball? Do you want egg moves? How hard is it to get those egg moves? Do you already have high IV parent(s)? Do you want it to be shiny?) breeding and training one pokemon could take anywhere from maybe an hour (for relatively uncomplicated ones) to many, many hours (if you want a competitive shiny in a special ball with egg moves that require what's called chain breeding). But shiny pokemon are also easier to get now, so there's that.

Pie might also have something to contribute on this topic when he sees this, as he's more into the competitive stuff than I am.

Seriously, X/Y is probably my second favorite installment, after RSE (so you can imagine the level of hype I have for ORAS). It's pretty awesome.

I'm really loving actually getting to see other people's secret bases, since I didn't have anyone to play with back when I played Emerald. Having built in wi-fi makes everything better!

For anyone else also into the secret base stuff, here are some useful links:

Secret Base Info and Features
Secret Base Decorations List
Secret Base Locations and Layouts

I'll also add these to the OP, I guess.

Feel free to link any other useful guides or anything you've found, and I can put those in the first post, too.

Also I'm not sure but I don't think you automatically get the bases of someone you're friends with? I guess we'll find out.

Eon Ticket allows you to go back to the island and get the other Lati@s. Only a few people started out with it and it is spread via Streetpass.

Awesome! I would have liked to have it in a Dive or Great Ball (to match the colors) but after a few hours of that nonsense, I'm ready to move on.

Pie likes resetting for good IVs/EVs/Nature and all that for the legendaries and I just don't even have the patience for that.

Just a tip if you didn't already know that you should recruit anyone to your base that has more than maybe ~20 or so flags, the more the better. If you visit them in your base there is a chance those people will dump some extra flags on you and then you can kick them out again if you want -- between this method and individually visiting a fuckton of bases today I've gotten maybe 75 flags today alone. (That's an unusually good day though, it normally won't be that good.)

I'm not exactly sure what the permutation is that makes them give you flags but I've heard that they're supposed to give you however many flags that they've collected that day up to the point at which you streetpassed them (which is why you only recruit the people with a bunch of flags already as they're more likely to have actually collected something that day).

That was my method of trying to preemptively kick out anyone who would come in just to say "I hate Pokemon and so should you, whine whine wharrgarbl nonsense"

And to be fair, not being able to afford a video game is a pretty 1st world problem. When you're just worried about keeping a roof over your head and the electricity running and enough food in your belly, that's kiiiiind of more important. As big of a Pokemon fan as I am, I didn't play 4th gen until last year (it came out in 2007!) because I was just so poor from then all the way through pretty much the end of 2011. And that was
with
the bare minimum of help from family to keep me off the streets -- otherwise, I could have easily been homeless even though I was working for most of that time. So I've been there.

So maybe you can chill the fuck out, deal with whatever problems are in your real life first, and come back to Pokemon when the time is right. The games will still be around, I promise.

@Maestro: They're probably from the lilycove sale, yes. This is the full list of decorations, including locations.

It's not just this thread, though, Psyche. The vast majority of your recent posts on this site have shown that you're just here to rain on everyone else's parade and I don't have any sympathy for that. We all have our problems and yours are not important enough to warrant you being a gigantic sourpuss everywhere.

Mega stones are not consumable (infinite use).

I think mega pokemon are just yet another way to explain new evolutions on old pokemon. In previous gens there has usually been some "newly discovered" way to do this, whether it was breeding to get pre-evolutions, incense holding, location-specific evolving (i.e. Leafeon, Glaceon, Magnezone, Rhyperior), etc. Also I guess for the competitive scene it's another way to add choice to the meta game -- do I use mega Sharpedo, or would I rather give it a Rocky Helmet so any physical attacks on it hurt even more? (That is probably a bad example that no competitive player would actually do, but you get the idea.)

I've heard rumors that the Battle Frontier is time locked (meaning it would be released at a later time, perhaps in a patch). Evidence supporting this mainly seems to be a few little quips that devs have made (can't recall anything exact) and the fact that the demo had time locked elements.

Eventually someone will data mine the game and we'll have a better idea, but that's the most I've heard for now. Also a possibility is a "Pokemon Z" combining parts of ORAS and X/Y, but as for emerald specifically? I think it's unlikely, personally.
