to answer the other question, i don't really have a read on varsoon yet. i've played one game with him before where he was scum, although i don't really see any meaningful comparisons to draw so far. i don't really think he's done anything alignment-indicative yet – from memory, at least.

I'm at a point where I can buy a saw cleaver but I've been using the Hunter Axe to great success

use what you like.
axe is fine.
Playstyle is a bit different but it follows a lot of the same principles, just
Saw does serrated damage, which does extra to beasts, which are most enemies in the game.
Saw also attacks fast in wide arcs that staggerlocks most weaker foes.
Saw also has a good trick form
Saw's just good.

I earnestly suggest trying every weapon and finding what you like the most.
Again, don't dump levels into a stat unless it is to meet a weapon requirement. Once you find a weapon you like, raise the stat for it to 40 or so.
