If he knew it was fake, he wouldve either called it out, or faked a townie reaction.

I don't agree with this.

Mafia lynches outside of specific circumstances are likely to have mafia manipulation behind them. I've seen plenty of games where town reaches incorrect conclusions from an early mafia lynch, and the opportunity cost of information from one less mafia being present (and the day one mafia lynches trend towards being on the weakest mafia, which lowers the potential information further) means that there's generally low information from the lynch as a result.

Town lynches, however, are more difficult for mafia to look good from, since it's significantly more difficult to look like you're defending the lynch while also still allowing it to go through as well as the increased risk that if you fail in this, it's more likely that the lynch will be pushed onto you or your partner instead.

I'm also of the mind that mafia are generally easier to catch if you know what you're looking for when they're ahead early on in the game, but that's a discussion for another time.
