If you're a little tech savvy you could try Audacity. That's what I used. I captured my desktop audio for the song, and then recorded myself a few times singing, and then used the best portions for the final mix.

if u import the original song into audacity in the "effects" tab there's one that's p decent for vocal removal too so you can have just a backing but without it being weird or in the wrong key like karaoke versions

To everyone responding to me exiting: thanks for the heartwarming messages! I'm struggling to believe them (that's what low self-esteem is for ya) but I'll take it for what it's worth.

I mean, I could record a few more songs if you'd like that, but I don't think the whole contest part of it isn't reserved for me, as I'm afraid to 'underperform' or 'not show up'. It's restricting me a lot to sing more freely, if you look at it that way. I don't want to sing while being under pressure - the pressure that I put myself under.
Then again, I don't want the same thing to happen like what happened to me in Song Contest; I shared songs and people criticized me for doing that while not voting. So I'll come back later and see if you guys would want this or not. I'm ok with whatever's being said from hereon.

P.S. I am going to quit participating in the contest but if you guys really think my voice is great I might record another song or two for you, but not as part of the competition.

That's why I grab instrumentals instead.

I've used Audacity before but I'm a fan of how SingSnap allows me to be very lazy. I also was not aware that it can take vocals out of a song, that's neat-o

I went back and forth between submitting and not submitting my song for a while. This sort of thing absolutely terrifies me
Ultimately I think it's good, and I need to practice working on my self-confidence. The worst that can happen is a few people think I sound a bit funny.

I definitely get that a competitive environment isn't for everyone though. Thank you for trying

The not sounding good and being self-conscious of that is why I changed my song selection. My original song was just going to have a piano accompaniment, but then I felt like by poor singing was even more exposed that way.

Hello everyone,

vizIIsto has withdrawn from the competition. We are sad to see him go, but are thrilled that he participated. I wanted to give you all kudos for just how awesome you all are being and how supportive you are being to one another. It warms my heart to see <3

Since viz has withdrawn, I am only eliminating one person this round. Let me know if you have any questions :)

If it makes you feel any better, I did the same thing! :(

Also, should there be any restrictions on editing/audio effects we use? I sort of thought it had to be a "live" performance. Otherwise, we could record each line several times and edit them together, then add reverb or pitch correcting. (Or the people with music editing skills could, anyway.)

thank you for the suggestion!

@Malkon, can you let me know what your ruling on this is? If rock operas/rock musicals count then I am 100% singing phantom of the opera (edit: can’t actually tell if this counts as a rock musical..)

Also I remembered that evanescence exists and I think that falls under rock? so I will probably sing an evanescence song, if rock operas don’t count.

too much effort to figure out what is and isn’t a rock opera so evanescence it is!

Same here!

I also assumed we weren’t really supposed to be editing, since the real show is all live, right?

The only editing I'm doing is layering the voices on top of each other.

I did live takes and took the best one. And then I recorded the backing vocals.

i added a very small amount of reverb/delay because the microphone I am using is designed to be extremely dry, so the sound would be a little uncanny without it. I also did several live takes like TBone, but I punched a single part where my laptop glitched out. I didn't do any automation/pitch correcting/time shifting etc to hide mistakes.

I can switch over to cell phone recordings if that would make everyone more comfortable

That all sounds fine/fair to me, I think my biggest issue would be with like corrections of pitch etc. I guess haschel just sounds really barbershop quartet-y naturally!

I was going to suggedt Evanescence, Lilith! Have fun with it!

Going to listen to these submissions as soon as I get home! Very excited :)

The only "edit" I did was recording with the music only in my ear and synching it afterwards, for the record.
