Usually when someone declares intent it is an invitation to claim. Removing your vote makes the subject no longer @L-1 and thus is not required to claim.

Also, I'm not fond of suddenly jumping off a wagon you've pushed when it's close to elimination. Seems like trying to avoid being in the vote count for it.
