The "making friends and enemies" played in 2018?? I remember nothing about that game

No.

I'm pretty sure she's going to die no matter what I do. Might as well try to learn whatever else I can before that happens.

I am popsofctown. I think I've dug up this game and read some of it before, I'm reading some of it again now. It's kinda funny to read stuff that I believe that I wrote but I have such little memory writing.

I got really emotional in the game which is rare for me

also I used to be good at mafia I'm like 2/4 in the first part of d1 on initial reads

tbh I think I'm in a bit of a reverse movement, I'm probably going to become meaner in exchange for winning games more
at least on this site

the meanness wasn't winning me any games actually though. I was slightly less persuasive and five times as accurate.

I guess it's possible I could read people better while being nasty but I think they're just two independent things

maybe, but I feel like trying to be nice just results in me losing interest in games here, because the games are so impersonal, specifically I used to play for a sense of social connection and belonging, but towards the end of last year I found that in an IRL social group, and I just lost the mojo to play mafia. I tried returning in spring but I misconstrued my issue as playing mafia as an obligation instead of a pastime (which I think was an issue but not the one that killed my motivation to play). I think this time I've actually managed to hit the right nerve in my mentality, because both this time and last time I returned I had something that took a good amount of my time away from mafia suddenly, but I actually managed to bounce back this time.

honestly i don’t know if it’d be worth it for me as a person to like, become meaner. i have fun being nice and social in games and also doing mafia things at the same time.

I think of the situation as a bit like the game of Survivor. You have those that take the game personally and those that recognize it as a game. My idea is that I need to do the latter to actually enjoy mafia and want to keep playing it, and if I'm going to do that I have to accept sometimes I might have to be a little abrasive
I think I'm becoming RadiantCowbells, which is kinda terrifying on some level. He used to be so alien to me, being able to strongly relate to him feels wrong at this point.

See, that sounds to me like an argument to go the other way. Recognizing it as a game means that everyone should walk away feeling more-or-less okay with how it went down, even if the outcome wasn't favorable.

I think it's absolutely important not to take the game personally, but I def don't think that means it's useful to be more mean to people, especially if
they
are taking it personally. The fine line is learning how to stay willing to vote/push somebody and not let yourself get deflected by AtE, while still trying to keep the situation enjoyable for all involved

RC is tremendously effective at pushing people but part of his game also involves taking it really personally as either alignment as defense and I don't think that's really an enjoyable way to play, even if it does work well. Honestly Menalque sometimes goes a bit too far in that direction too, though I do think he's working on it and I don't think I've seen him use it for advantage as scum in the way that RC has, rather he just genuinely gets offended as town.

The problem is if you're getting offended as town all the time then you have to start faking it as scum too, and that's the road that I try not to go too far down

I may be forgetting since I haven't been around that much so far this week - when was this specifically? Are you talking about the pressure over TL's vote on you instead of Dunn?

Well, to go back to Survivor, those who recognize it as a game play harder because they don’t emotionally invest as much and so have less holding them back. Sure it may alienate those who get hurt by it, but the idea isn’t intentionally being mean, just not letting emotions get in the way. Sure I might still take an attack on me personally, but I’ll try not to let that poison my experience.

Good perspective.

AtE is one of those trickier things to deal with, though. And it's not an exclusive strategy to scum.

PEdit: @GuiltyLion - yeah, that's what triggered it.
