@Porochaz, was there gas mains in the basement. If so you might just have to do this in a specific order so as not to cause a gas leak or to accidently ignite any gas:
1. Shut off gas.
2. Fix pipes using pipe and wrench
3. Turn off the power to the first generator
4. Turn on gas.
5. Use basement water on pipes to check for gas leaks. (You should be able to see any gas escaping through the water, but you might need a flashlight to see if anyone has one)
6. Seal gas leaks
7. Turn on both generators.
I might be overcomplicating it, but safety first, last thing anyone wants is a earth shattering kaboom from the basement.
