Is it really surprising that a newer player read the six-page thread full of experienced players who are familiar with each other and couldn't come up with anything?
Yep.

It's as much as what they chose to gripe about, as what they chose to not comment on.

This is also a misrepersentation of the thread, there's plenty of content I'd expect a hyperactive town puppy to be barking at, even in the first few pages.

Indeed, Neuter-head is the one playing with Plus Joyed, who is being a minus right now.

Spayhead is off frolicking in the outfield alternating between weeping and swearing murder towards the general direction of all tunnels.

imo
a brief phase of shit/fluff posting to get all of that silliness out followed by discussion of initial impressions to get the game started
Interesting.

You and I see RVS very differently, and as I was just telling spayhalf, I'm not sure that it's alignment indicative instead of play style indicative.

To me, RVS is a means to an end, and exiting it as quickly as possible is the primary goal. The best RVS is one that ends on the first page. You see it more as a way to "Get out the lulz" before srsposting begins.

I really don't see the game as of yet being toxic or very long, and so apathy seems a little pre-mature.

peddit: no i don't like meta research unless I was in that game

If you're scum notsci into this player list.... you need to be planning several days ahead.

Trying to pocket a few players is really your only option.

That actually goes for quite a few players in this game.

There has been one defining thing about our interactions in games since I can remember. That has been your paranoia about me and confessions that you can't read me so you just hope scum-me doesn't take you into elo.

When was the last time we played together and you put out a set of townreads in the early game that didn't have some sort footnote about how you were going to play around me?

I mean, obviously you can't get me and Cabd to read each other for you this time, but there are certainly other options in this game. GiF is scary-good at spotting scum me. zmuffin will probably recover from his awful read, assuming he's town.

I had a talk with bob3141 in another game scum mentality. He introduced me to the concept of give the town something to solve and it actually has worked on one game of mine so far.

I wanted the chance to show up big here.
Huh.
I on the other hand had fever dreams about rolling scum in a game where half the playerlist knew me after not having played for five years

It’s Day 1. To imply that a solve is at all what should be happening here and now is just not the way.

This is where reads start to develop, and I am currently getting a feel for the gamestate, the playerlist, and once I hyperanalyze everyone and the way they speak, the way they react to everyone, which I have already taken in, my analysis will come in.

This is an old school mindset of yours.

This is an alt, I’ve also played off site, I’ve had weekly face to face, sometimes daily, mafia groups, I’m a large theme mod.

So I am here right now to help everyone who doesn’t know me learn the way that I am and help them be able to better read me.
Would you like to start by looking over s_s's iso?

For the record, I don't really feel like there's pressure on me per se. It's more just that I haven't contributed anything yet, and people see that as a less-than-ideal state of affairs.
I felt it like you did post a few times and people didn’t like your “voice”, and went after you.

I confirmed that to myself when i entered today and the same thing happened to me with them coming after me for a second.

I’m just louder and more abrasive than you so they didn’t come after me fully.

Which is also interesting to note.

For what it’s worth, I fuck with Remelia, Morph, and Bell already on a player level, I just don’t think all three of them are town.
Mostly, you're hyperposting and doing what you claim we've been doing: trying to control the conversations. I can either engage you, try to read you, and work with you if you're town.

Or I can go on about my business in this game and ignore you for a while.

It's not entirely my choice. It's not entirely yours.

For now, the balls in your court, though!

Do you mean the gamestate as in the overall trends and major activities of the game? Because it's a pretty unremarkable early game right now.

If you just wanted to hear my thoughts on the game, I don't have any yet that I haven't shared, but I can reread and look for some if you would like.
I'll take anything that helps me see how you're processing this game. Right now, I have what appear to be a few low-key snipes, against the grain comments, and what appears to be some active dislike for the hydrae in the game.

The last time I played with you, you were in a hydra. That was a couple years ago and it seems that your playstyle has changed a little. You're closer to in-the-moment in this game that I remember from that one. And you're a little less heart-on-sleeve earnest looking than you were in the loooooong ago game I modded that you played.

I guess I should assume you have no context on the past playstyles, plusJoyed. Let me very briefly fill you in so you can follow along.

To be clear, if you made a Venn diagram of the games both heads of this hydra (Cabd and Fferyllt) have played that included in some form at least one of Notscience, Borkjerfkin, Guy In Freezer, ZmuffinMan, Innocent Villiager, Prism, Bulge, and maria? It would likely be a single circle.

We have tens of games with each other, and Meta is playing an outsized role in some of our interactions.

Better would be if you could select a specific issue you either have an opinion on, or think I might have an opinion on, and we can discuss that issue relatively in-depth.

I mean that we're using reads and tells that are player-specific built up over the past 8 years or so.

For example, this game: viewtopic.php?f=56&t=37614

I like the idea of seeing scum play in a gamestate where that is presumed the case. Does this make sense?
Sure. But in that case, it's almost certainly Muffin and two others. And that would break my heart. We'd probably win, but it'd break my heart. In like... 49 different fractures.

In post 454, Prism wrote:So I've had thoughts since Page 13 but wanted to give more time to see if I could get some more votes on me for reaction. 6 more pages and more than half the playerlist, it looks like this won't happen unless I just want to AFK even now that I have things to say. Kind of disappointing but there's a limit to how self-indulgent I can be. My thinking was that if I'm not going to be useful any other way, I might as well just see what happens if I played openly dismissive. Of the playerlist, I've only played with FL and I barely noticed him either time, meaning I couldn't really open the way I like to. I was really disappointed Morph didn't tag onto the vote given their previous interest, then realized they apparently want to sync their vote, but then still didn't swing it even when the other came around so alas.

Both Bulge and Ffery misinterpreted those posts, by the way. I was never bored/apathetic of the game. I was extremely interested and eager to see what would result.

I really didn't like this. There's a really clear town incentive to pressure players-even easy targets. Why is this scummy from Bulge?

This slot feels town because of the off the cuff/immediate response style but I'm having a hard time coming to terms with the reads: I did like that they immediately elaborated on 310 in 311. I also liked the response in 337

P-Edit: Good fucking lord the pace of this game is insane
What vote did you want us to tag on to?

Cabd knows he can move our vote wherever he wishes. My mental vote will be on Secret Tunnels until I see something more troubling in the game than they are.

I don't think it's fair to SR prism yet, you look like your just looking for an easy target here without explaining your process much
UNVOTE:
VOTE: bulge
I really didn't like this. There's a really clear town incentive to pressure players-even easy targets. Why is this scummy from Bulge?

? Timing on this really confuses me. You just took issue with two different reads/reactions of theirs in #303.

Assuming Prism meant that we didn't vote her makes her sad.

But that wasn't going to happen, notsci is the fish to fry before anything else at that point in the game. You're a side dish at best.

Especially when there's other posts onsite to make that are less fraught with danger at every turn.
The real reason they're afraid is because I'm holding them hostage to release those Scumsman PTs, I'm not giving up on this

I had hoped fakegod would end up in the player list (he might as a replacement) so I could votepark on him until he tells me who the hell was playing as guy the third in dancegame. Alas, we exist in this reality and not that one.

Have you played much with them? My experience with them is as a mod in two towngames.
Prism's comment about having no thoughts on the game is a towntell that I like to use. But, this seems like the kind of game where that would be an easy thing to do as scum who's not part of the meta circle, so I'm hesitant to assign townpoints to it. (And I'm not really sure how much of a towntell it actually is, though I have seen it be right in the past.)

Other than that Prism seems pretty unwilling to do anything at all to avoid pressure. I would suspect that that's just a Prism MO, but it's possibly a towntell.

I haven't played with Prism, discounting a game that was abandoned immediately after I replaced into it. I modded a game where they had a deadbeat scumteam and pulled off an extremely impressive scum win (in what was probably a somewhat townsided setup). I don't recall exactly why they got so townread but I think it had to do with faking really genuine-looking actions such as a self-vote. So that's probably a good sign since they seem the polar opposite of that here, but it was a long time ago.
My impression of their townplay in the games I modded was that they were intense, focused and passionate about getting things right.

That kind of intensity does seem to burn off with a few years' play.

I'm not scumreading them. I'm just a little disappointed atm.

When was the last time we played together and you put out a set of townreads in the early game that didn't have some sort footnote about how you were going to play around me?

I do want to challenge the morph townread. Taking a strong scum presence is likely to be extremely important this game-you can't just sit on the backfoot. Ffery might legitimately be excited to get to play with me, but the motivational "Shine!" stuff feels a bit off to me. I definitely started off a bit more confident in Dystopia but the focused, obsessive play came much later. In Midscummer Night's Dream it never really happened at all, though it's hard to separate mine and nancy's effort because we didn't really sign. I can see why they probably liked my Dystopia play, but honestly that game is more vivid to me because I
singlehandedly lost my team the game
with my intensity.

Do they actually want me to shine or are they just saying it? I don't really know. I think the pressure for content is okay but perhaps overwrought.
Prism, I want to play with that person. You were impressive despite the loss. You went up against scum-Jingle in an anonymous alt, which I wouldn't wish on anyone, and you came that little bit short mostly due to a town that flaked way more than you deserved.

Though modding that game did help me eventually see scum-Jingle in a different anonymous alt in an anon game I played a few weeks later. Mostly because the play was identifiable Jingle as well as scum-Jingle after having a ringside seat for a few weeks.

It's not so much that I thought scum-you would, as I thought that in this game the sheer burning happiness at getting a town role pm after days of fearful anticipation would be readily apparent to town-you.

That's the stuff that town-notsci used to spot easily, even if he didn't always trust he'd gotten it right.

Seriously, Nacho launching the game super late derailed my entire awesome plan.

1: Propose to muffin that we all massclaim
2: Muffin goes first
3: We decide it's a bad idea after muffin claims
4: We policy muffin for anti-town claiming
5: ???
6: Town wins (Unless we're mafia then mafia wins)

It's amazing that you've played a few games with me and notsci and not noticed how he reads me and how I read him. I'm trying to put my head around the possibility that it's a channel of data that you just don't pay attention to because in your mafia calculus it's not alignment indicative stuff or something. From that interview we did a while back I definitely learned some differences in how we approach the game. In general I think you're approach is better. I wish it was stuff I could weld onto my game.

I don't remember saying that you being on the list was not part of the problem. In fact I remember saying that you being on the list and me not being in that post even as a footnote (which is usually how I appear in early notsci reads) was part of the problem because he expresses paranoia about us both. But the main part of the problem was STUFF THAT WAS MISSING in his early play with respect to me.

And no, I'm not townreading him. I think you understand exactly what I meant in my reference to Nacho's treatment of scumreads, and so you know that my read hadn't softened at all.

It freaks me out a little that he's defending me to you.

That's because the context of 154 is from earlier posts.

Notsci rvs-voted me.

I joked back at him a la Mini 1699 viewtopic.php?f=53&t=62686

He changed his vote, with no actual acknowledgement of my bussing comment.

I care that I get it right.

@bork "this shit" was specifically about seeing a vote on zmuffin, and seeing that there was a sudden (to me, who had my head buried in a partial reads list) shift of suspicion in bell's direction.

I don't like anything about where this game is currently headed.

Cabd had to drop out a few minutes ago to go tend a game he's modding.

I really need to do the same, but I want some clear air here first.

As to off base, it's more just wanting to argue this out with zmuffin without players taking sides midway through.

Though I'm starting to accept that I'm not breaking through the brick wall, and I kinda want to go back 4-5 pages and see what the hell happened to kick off reactions to bell and midwaybear.

Looks like it's done for now. I don't want to lose sight of the whole game, especially today. And I do want to get my thoughts into a concise form for Maria, because Gent 6 is fond of Lady 1.

Cut them some slack. It's incredibly hard to plan your entrance into the main thread when several slots you fear drew town and you didn't.

Especially when there's other posts onsite to make that are less fraught with danger at every turn.
This has gotten a little more concerning given the elapsed time.

because, like, it'd be pretty easy for me to just agree with general consensus about you and ignore you if i'm scum rofl

or serenade you with compliments so you ignore me

on the other hand, i don't understand what gave you the impression that i'd think you're town if i'm town? because that's clearly not meta-based, even ignoring the fact that we're both coming back from like a 2-year hiatus
The scumclaim post was about 30% joke and 70% wanting to see how you would react. This post I'm responding to is more in the line of what I expected from you.

My expectations are not so much meta-based as they are how I've interpreted your scumreads in the past. And how you've expressed them. This is way more of push than you've ever sent my way (even that one time when I actually was scum). When you've scumread me, it was desultory and you had bigger fish to fry in the moment. And we eventually got pretty right with each other. I'd like to trust that will happen again, but the ridicule and shutting me down is new. I've seen it directed at others and I've understood why you thought they were being stupid, or scum, or stupid scum. So my conclusion should be?

I want to get current on the stuff that surprised me to read the last few pages. I've gone back 20 pages to try and figure out wtf happened to this game and it's going to be a while before I'm completely back in the present.

Your "lol scumreading notsci" shit is not helping me sort him. I haven't written him off and I hope there's something in the next few pages that will make sense of how he's approached me so far. I've given you both a roadmap of why such an early post clanged for me. He needs to explain where his head was at.

I am halfway through a glass of wine but I am here now

I think its a little unfair to be expecting that level of interaction when we havent played in so long. As I said before (and even in the queue) I was excited to play with everyone!

Mala actually called me out before I started doing my tunneling in 2148 and I broke it and sat back and actually got a townread on her while sitting back and not engaging super hard. I suppose you can ask bulge if our engagements in game have felt different since before too?

(unrelated- I also looked in that game for unrelated reasons and my favorite us interaction was at the start of D2/3 where we were agreeing that if nacho and pie were scum they would be strongarming their way through the game. And they proceeded to do that.)
That was one of the games I read leading up to deciding to play again. I basically froze in elo of that game and losing in that way was why I decided to take my first hiatus. I needed to get away from games for a while and see if I could come back and play with some degree of conviction again.

My favorite moment in a game we shared involved a bear. I reread it last month, too.

So, yeah, I have some pretty reinforced expectations of how we'd interact in our first game back. This wasn't it.

I don't get why you didn't react at all to my bussing post.

Somebody set up us the town

Bell - the easy, almost free-association posting at the start of the game felt really town to both of us. Followed by an insane number of "thinking what we're thinking when we're thinking it" moments. Like more than I've ever run into with an unknown player before. When he gets down into the reasoning behind those moments, we find that reasoning solid and consistent.

midwaybear - this is primarily a meta dive read and we're not interested in giving him a roadmap of the differences in his town and scum play. Subtracting that stuff out, the things that stand out are the in-the-moment nitpickiness, grabbing at strings and yanking them to see where they go.

Are you a bad enough dude to town read the president?

The Bulge- This read is almost strong enough to go into the next tier up, but we need to see more from him. It's similar to our Bell read, but not as frequent posting has meant a lot fewer "thinking what we're thinking" moments, but the few we've seen were salient, and near instantaneous with our own reactions. Ffery is aware that this kind of read doesn't always pan out, but she still likes them when they happen

PlusJoy - This read took a lot of questioning to understand his approach to mafia. Given that approach his play is pretty consistent and understandable.

Your townread might be in another castle

something_smart - He's moved up considerably for ffery from when we were poking at him earlier in the game. she really likes that he asked for a point of discussion, and that since that interaction he's been more stuck in the game, if that makes sense

Prism - Ffery did some hard-buddying, and she likes the echoes of cautious wtf that she got back. Need a better understanding of how they're processing the game.

I wish to high hell that we could townread these players but we can't yet

Giffybork- GiF was hitting the tonal stuff beautifully while he was here this morning, but there was no hard analytical edge or squinty eyes in ffery's direction and that worries her a little. Yeah we were all still having fun, but there was stuff to react to and it didn't happen. Bork in a lot of ways is oozing town. ffery is grumpy about lines of questioning getting tromped (not just at bork) and knows she shouldn't be taking it personally but she is. On pure objective grounds Remilia should be higher. ffery has liked bork's recent questions, especially his trying to nail us down on a zmuffin read. that's classic townbork and the beauty of it is that he doesn't really show his hand in terms of using that info to form a read of us. ffery's always surprised to find out she was being weighed in the balance. It's less surprising when she's doing some weighing herself.

Muffin - We're not going to try to read here yet. Cooldown needs to happen because ffery is all over the place about zmuffin's push.

Tunneling the Tunnel

Secret Tunnels - not townreading here. it's probably not fair to expect our games to pick up right where they left off, but that's where ffery is at. If you guys are town it's going to take a different way of processing your play for me to see it.

Leftovers for dinner

The rest of you lot. Special shout out to Alisae for avoiding game thread or something. Maria's fate will be tied to mine yet again this game, so sorting her is a whenever sort of thing.

No I didn't realize that. I'm still trying to get my head into the current gamestate. I have never gotten so out of phase with a game in my life as I have the last few hours. I haven't seen anything at all I dislike so far from Bulge, and I see that he's posted a lot more since the read formed. My main hold back was just needing to have a better feel for where his head is in the game. I think the info is there now, but I haven't absorbed it all yet.

The Secret Tunnels dial hasn't swung all the way to town. I'm starting to think we'll get there.

@PlusJoyed my 3 am brain was, without actually looking at the thread, thinking very similar thoughts about a fairly wide swath of game stuff that zmuffin hasn't posted about, while spending most of his time negging us.

Bork you want to talk about how terrible our read of you and GiF is?
