Monopoly is all well and good but I'm here to post about hobbyist board games because I'm a nerd. Settlers of Catan is a classic of the genre and is considered to have popularised the Eurogame, which is characterised by mostly indirect player interaction, no player elimination, catch up mechanics and a decent amount of abstraction in game pieces. Amongst a lot of hobbyists it's thought of as fun but not necessarily having aged as well as some, but for the top level competitors it has become an aggressively social game, where manipulating other players to get the most out of the trading mechanic is a big key to victory.

1. Avalon maybe, or Risk or Diplomacy?
2. Playing monopoly by myself as a kid to see if i just kept going round the board, which property i'd land on the most, to work out probabilities.

1) My absolute favorite boardgame is Dominion
2) Playing Power Grid with Mith & Meme at MemeMeet and falling asleep during the game multiple times.
3) Race for the Galaxy - I love future Sci Fi stuff
4) Betrayal - The countless different haunt scenarios make for a lot of replayability
5) Monopoly - I've done terrible things in this game that I kind of regret
