Del: "I have to protect my city. I cannot suffer them to live anywhere near here. If they do survive, they will grow up like their parents and take the lives of caravaners who travel to and from the city. There is evil in their hearts. May I destroy them to put them out of their misery, or would you like them to starve, or are you planning on taking them on as a pet?" Del laughs at the thought of that last suggestion.

Cassius: "Del, maybe try not being so rigid here. It clearly matters to the elf what happens to the pups."

Del: "I will kill them or let them starve, but I cannot suffer them to live. What say the rest of you?"

you have some options left, you can make persuasion check on Del, you can use animal handling to nurse them back to health, you can chalk this up as a tragedy and vow never to let a beast like this die again on your watch

"If we aren't going to be able to protect them, then we might as well kill them. Letting them starve seems cruel."

Cael walks towards the puppies while reciting a prayer to Shigane, the Goddess of Death.

"Welcome these creatures in your realm, oh Goddess of Death, Shigane,
for they were born from and marked by the devil,
purify their souls if any,
give them the haven that we cannot afford to give them today".

Then Cael attempts to kill the puppies with Chill Touch.

"It's a good thing we're doing here, elf. Please don't get in the way. These are no ordinary puppies. And they will die on their own."

Cael: "Elf, what you think it's kindness right now, it is not. It is actually cruelty, leaving them to fend for themselves and die of hunger is a worse fate than dying to our hands. Plus these are no ordinary animals, they are monsters, not worse than humans but monsters nonetheless".

"What am I thinking? I am thinking that we are considering our options and you decided to just go ahead and end a helpless life. Do not pretend to be shocked I would try to defend these creatures unless you wish to claim your ears do not work. There may have been another way, but evidently you have such a lust for blood that you cannot wait even a few minutes to begin butchering."

Seeing that he is outnumbered, the elf looks at the rest of the party. "Have none of you a care for any creature save yourselves? Will you just stand there? I think little of your kind, but these two are showing that even my suspicion that you possess hearts at all is too optimistic."

I'll use Druidcraft to manifest a weather prediction in front of Del's face in the hopes of distracting him.

well, they're probably all dead, so i guess i won't have to propose anything

"You are naive if you think those monsters will not harm anyone when they grow big like their parents did! They all do!

If you are asking me if I'm choosing between them and us, then yes! I'm absolutely choosing us! It is not a matter of heart, it is a matter of survival and in this world, people that think with their heart instead of their head do not survive long.

a dozen heads = 6 pups. the pups are all dead.

Cassius steps in between the Elf and the gnome.

"Alright, enough! What's done is done. Elf, if you get in a fight here and die, think of all the animals you won't be able to help in the future. And gnome, if you aim is to work with people, perhaps not being so hasty is the key? Can we make amends and recognize that we all are alive now?

That death dog was a threat to creatures everywhere. We have slain it."

Del shakes his head. "Simpering fool. There is only a right side and a wrong side here." He glares at the elf before sighing and moving towards the entrance of the cave. "My job is done here, if you want to loot amongst the remains, be my guest. I will see you back at the guardhouse." Del exits the cave.
