Very occasionally it is correct to play out the broken ladder. In this game Lee Sedol (probably the best player of his generation) forces white to play out the broken ladder to capture all the white stones in the bottom right. It is a famous game because playing out a ladder is so uncommon, especially a broken one.

There are rare situations such as the triple ko bellow that the normal ko rule cannot resolve. Many modern rule sets have

rules that seek to resolve this by disallowing moves that return the board to any previous state but the details of those aren't important the vast majority of the time.

titus did def have the goal of arguing with you and trying to get on the town side of that argument and push you away. i interpreted that as having the selfish goal mostly of trying to appear as the "correct" one and get townread off it, especially to pocket April, which worked btw. but it could have had a dual purpose also of not letting you work together with town
