monday, 7am. still half-asleep, you clock into work at Datisi's Café. it wasn't a great job, but it had its perks: you could have as much coffee as you wanted, you got to yell at a rude customer every once in a while, and you were pretty sure your manager did not actually care about the amount of work you all were doing.

the sound of a nearby door opening interrupted you from your thoughts. through them, you saw the manager himself, Datisi. as usual for him at this time of day, he was holding a huge mug of coffee and he looked like he had slept less than 3 hours last night. he lazily waved his free hand towards the break room, signaling you all to follow him.

"right, so," he started once everyone had gathered inside, "you're all aware of that lawsuit we had to face recently?"

"the one where we almost killed 3 people due to serving coffee with spoiled milk?" was heard from somewhere in the room.

"no, the other one."

"the one where one of the waiters got into a physical fight with a customer and broke 4 of his bones?" said another worker, which was followed by giggling from a few employees, and a whispered "he deserved it!" from the perpetrator of said bone breakage.

"oh, the one where you got sued for making your employees work 7 days a week, no days off for months, and for below minimum wage?"

"yeah, that one." datisi took a sip of his coffee, hoping his caffeine-withdrawal headache would go away soon. "you know the inspection company that was helping them out in court? well, they're still salty that they lost. and for days now i've been noticing missing documents and items."

he was walking around the room as he spoke, the speech making him feel slightly more alive. "well, they made a mistake last night. and based on the information i've managed to gather from the company network, this is an inside job."

the room fell silent, and soon awkward glances were being exchanged between the employees. "you mean... from here?"

"yes. i don't know how many, but..." he trailed off, before returning his gaze on the workforce, and speaking in a much firmer tone. "here's what we're going to do. due to recent involvements with the law, my powers are currently limited. i can fire one person each day, and i trust that you will be able to figure out who is loyal to this café, and who isn't. so at the end of the workday, let me know who you've decided should be fired."

Datisi was about to leave the break room, thinking that the meeting is over. but just as he was opening the door, petapan interrupted him.

"hold on. so, you're the leader of a workforce that isn't doing its job very well, that has a company that wants to destroy it, and whose members are acting as moles within us.

you're basically forcing us into playing that awful social deduction game?" as petapan was saying that, Malakittens, Lukewarm, Titus, Andresvmb, and fireisredsir all turned their heads towards him, clearly taking interest in what he was saying.

it didn't take long for Datisi to be called back into the break room, his employees signaling that the decision has been made. so much so that he wondering if any of them were actually working. though, he wasn't setting an example on that front today either.

"Ircher, right?"

the atmosphere in the room made him guess they wanted him to fire Ircher. most of the employees were looking at Ircher with a hostile face, and nobody seemed to want to stand close to him. a few of the employees nodded their head in affirmation.

"Ircher, you're fired."

Ircher finally turned to Datisi, a nervous look on his face. "but... i..."

"return the company's belongings, and leave."

Ircher sighed, took his company ID out of his pocket, and handed it to Datisi. "good luck," he said, and without looking at any of his former colleagues, quietly left the break room. if anyone was having doubt about firing Ircher, none of them dared to show it.

Datisi pulled out his phone and opened the Café Management App. after entering the first password, the second password, his birthday, favourite colour, mother's maiden name, his sun, moon, and rising zodiac signs, the three numbers on the back of his credit card, his mafiascum password, and scanning all 10 of his fingers, he went into the "fire an employee" option.

he scanned Ircher's company ID. his phone let out a weird beeping sound, and a red [ERROR] message appeared on the screen.

both seeing Datisi's surprised face and hearing the unusual beep made others even more curious as to what is going on, and they tried to take a peek at the phone screen.

"Ircher's ID," Datisi mumbled, still processing the information, "it's a fake. he's not a true employee here!"

hearing that, the employees started cheering. some of them were laughing, some of them were congratulating each other. two of them even hugged one other. "can you scan more cards?" one of them asked, while handing Datisi their ID.

Datisi tried to select the "fire an employee" option again, but it was of no use. the government had restricted his access, and the app locked itself for the day.

"unfortunately, no," he said while putting his phone away, "in any case, congratulations on finding one of the inspectors," he smiled, which, for some reason, slightly creeped you out.

"now, go back to work."

before you managed to ask him what his internet had to do with his ability to walk to the café, he ushered you to take a seat.

"right, so," he started after practically throwing himself into his chair, "i have to tell--"

"wait," he got interrupted by a few employees, who were awkwardly looking around the room. three people were still not present, and Datisi did not start meetings until everyone was there. "aren't we... gonna wait for..."

Datisi's face soured. "no," he said as he pulled something out of his pocket, and threw it onto the table. it took you a moment to realize what the items were. three mangled and ripped ID cards. while the text on them was hard to read due to the state they were in, you managed to make out the names of the previous card owners: petapan, BlueBloodedToffee, and Nero Cain.

"i found them this morning. i... i checked the management app, the three of them are deleted from the system, and i wasn't able to add them back in. i couldn't reach them by phone, and i had a hunch they wouldn't come to work today."

after Datisi finished saying that, the whole room was quiet for a while, the employees processing the information they've just been told.

their thoughts were once again interrupted by a pair of footsteps approaching the room. this time, it was the backup manager, GeorgeBailey.

"hey, Datisi, is the meeting over soon?" he said as he awkwardly shifted his weight from one leg to another, careful not to drop any of the numerous papers he was holding. "i need you for some... uh, manager business."

you weren't quite sure, but you thought you saw a faint "bomb defusal manual" title on one of the papers he was holding.

"oh! yeah, manager business," said Datisi as he got up from his chair, suddenly in a better mood. "i need to go do manager business. y'all, do the same thing you did yesterday. i'm counting on you!"

the day seemed to be slow, both on the customers and on the discussion fronts. you were currently taking your 7th scheduled group coffee break of the day, and it seemed like nobody had any new ideas. as most of the employees were mindlessly looking at their phone screens, occasionally saying a word or two.

at one point, the discussion lulled so much that you were able to hear what was going on in the manager office: an explosion, followed by Datisi screeching something about someone not being a gamer. by this point, you knew it was better not to intervene.

"you know what? it's obvious this is not ending any way other than Roden getting fired," Lukewarm said as he put his phone down and got up from his seat, "i'm gonna go let Datisi know."

a few people absent-mindedly nodded in agreement; Roden rolled his eyes and kept staring at his phone.

after a few minutes and just a little bit of yelling and threats, Lukewarm was back in the break room. Datisi walked in right after him, visibly pissed off due to his manager "business" getting interrupted.

"so... Luke told me you want me to fire Roden, right?"

"yeah, yeah, whatever," said Roden as he approached Datisi, "

"am i getting paid, Datisi?" Ausuka asked in a deadpan voice, though Datisi knew she was far from apathetic on the subject.

"okay, you know what? how about we all take the rest of the day off, eh?" said Datisi after clapping hands, in hopes that it would get the employees' attention on him.

"i said, get out," as Datisi was saying that, he opened the door and gestured for them all to leave. the tone of his voice showed that he was on the verge of a breakdown, and since nobody wanted to deal with that, they quietly started leaving the room. after all, they could compare their wages later in the company group chat, which Datisi obviously wasn't a member of.

"GEORGE! WE'RE CLOSING EARLY, GO BE USEFUL FOR ONCE AND CLOSE THE CAFE, I HAVE OTHER WORK TO DO," Datisi yelled out as he headed to his office, already typing "mafiascum.net" into his phone.

"Ausuka and Vivax, huh?" looking around, the two of them were the only ones from yesterday who weren't present. sighing, he put the cup down onto the desk and headed towards the break room. those forum mafia shitposts would have to wait.

the sight in the break room made Datisi wonder if he should've just stayed in bed that day. Ydrasse and Titus were yelling at each other, as were fireisredsir and mastina. most other employees were looking back and forth between the two arguing pairs. one person was even chanting "fight! fight! fight!" at both of them.

"alright, can anyone tell me what is--" Datisi tried to ask, but he got interrupted by an empty glass bottle flying at his face. unfortunately for the employees, he managed to duck in time.

the sound of glass breaking managed to catch their attention, at least. Datisi got back up to his feet, picking the glass shards out of his hair.

"okay," he said in a deadpan voice, "let's try that again. can anyone tell me--"

7:30am. the door of the café was locked, and Datisi was nowhere to be seen. if today hadn't been the first of the month - which was when you get your paycheck, though you were slowly starting to get suspicious of the fact Datisi would always only give you cash - you all would've gone home by now.

the silence was broken by notification sounds from your phones, all of them. a text by Datisi in the company group chat. well, the other one.

"hey friends, sorry, uh... i forgot to pay the rent for the place. we can't use the café until it's covered, and i'm gonna need a few days to... completely ethically get some money from the government, so. take two days off, see ya then."

a collective groan was heard, you all got out of bed for nothing. one person started typing, soon sending another message into the group chat.

"we're getting our paycheck then, right?"

the workers finally gathered in the break room, disappointed that there were no envelopes at the table. it didn't take long for Datisi to get there too; you wondered just how much he missed the place, as he looked like an addict going through withdrawal. he was gripping his coffee cup and scanning the room, silently counting the people present.

after taking way more time than he really should have, he approached the table and put something on it. "Lukewarm's ID," he said in a monotone voice, "i found it this morning. i can see that everyone else is present, so... call me when you need me." with that, he turned around and approached the still-open door.

"hold on!" a few of the employees jumped up, "what about our paychecks?"

Datisi sighed, stopping for a second to look back at them. "they'll be in your lockers by the end of the day." and with that, he left the room.

"maybe Malakittens should get fired," said one person, with a bunch of them quickly agreeing. Malakittens was sitting in the corner, typing on her phone; she didn't show any signs of even hearing them.

"Malakittens, do you have anything to say for yourself?" Andresvmb asked her. she didn't take her gaze off her phone screen.

"well, alright then," he said after a moment of silence, "i'll go tell Datisi that we're done here."

shortly after, Andresvmb returned with Datisi. he was complaining about being interrupted in his studies, though the employees knew that probably meant he was losing at online tetris.

"yeah, yeah, here is your ID," she said as she got up, took her ID card, and ripped it in half.

"i found another ripped ID card this morning," he said after everyone had sat down. his voice mostly sounded tired, but you could notice a hint of anguish in it; restaffing would not be cheap. "PenguinPower won't be coming to work anymore."

quiet whispers filled the room. just as Datisi was about to get up and leave his employees for another round of discussion, one of them raised their hand, trying to get his attention. it was Uncrowned, who was awkwardly looking around his colleagues.

"hey, Datisi, you said that you found

"well, i'm not going into his office again," said Andresvmb in a tone that nobody wanted to argue with.

after a moment of uncomfortable silence and avoiding each other's gazes, jjh927 got up. "fine, fine, i'll do it."

shortly after, jjh927 was back with annoyed Datisi. it appears that he told him who they were planning to fire, as Datisi approached furtiveglance as soon as he entered the room. "furtiveglance, give me your--"

"are you the manager?"

Datisi fell silent. he was looking at furtiveglance with a puzzled look on his face, internally debating whether he'd just heard something very wrong. "w... what?"

"i said," furtiveglance said as he got up from their chair, a hint of annoyance in their voice, "are you the manager?"

so, he did not mishear. "yes?" he replied in a shaky voice, still unable to comprehend what is going on.

"oh good," furtiveglance smiled, "i've been waiting for my coffee for... six days now. when will i be able to get it?"

Datisi blinked. he could feel the beginning of a migraine coming on.

"fine!" furtiveglance yelled, an appalled look on their face, "expect a bad review! the service in this place is atrocious!" they screamed out as they slammed the door behind them.

for a moment, nobody was saying anything. Datisi looked furious; if he hadn't been violating worker rights for the last few years, his employees probably would've been worried about him.

he took a deep breath. then another one.

"right. now that that NONSENSE is dealt with, i will see the rest of you tom--"

he got interrupted by the door of the break room suddenly being forcefully opened. a breathless backup manager, GeorgeBailey, ran into the room.

"DATISI!" he yelled out while still trying to catch his breath, "Datisi, i just got the word... the... the inspection company HQ... it's on fire!"

a collective "WHAT!?" was heard form both Datisi and the employees.

"a fire broke out," he continued, finally able to talk a bit more normally, "the whole building is burning! they're evacuating the neighbourhood, the fire department thinks they can stop the spread, but the building is beyond repair!"

on one hand, Datisi did not want to feel joy about a fire breaking out and people possibly being injured. but this meant the pesky inspection company would have to relocate. and, to the misfortune of the remaining employees, the café would continue to operate.

Datisi couldn't help but let out a smirk as he said, "let's all take the rest of the day off, see y'all tomorrow."

he decided to take the longer way home; it passed next to the inspection company HQ, and he wanted to see what was going on.

GeorgeBailey was telling the truth, the building was on fire. he couldn't get very close as the area was restricted for civilians' safety, but it looked like it was going to collapse sooner or later. just as he expected, he saw a bunch of firetrucks around, a good number of cop cars, and a few ambulances on standby.

he was about to head home, when he saw another vehicle approach the restricted zone. it was a van from the local news station. in of itself, that wasn't anything unusual, but seeing it made him realize something else:

that was the first news reporters vehicle on the scene.

as he was walking away from the fire and towards his house, he did a cursory google search on his phone. and just as he suspected, there were no reports yet about the fire online either.

upon making sure he wasn't standing in the middle of the road, he stopped walking. smiling to himself, he closed the google search, opened the discord app, went into his DMs with GeorgeBailey, and sent him a short message.
