I am having trouble recalling EVER being in a game where "everyone" thought someone was scum, but we werent going to kill them. If no one thinks they are town, why do we need certainty?

well unless something truly earth shattering happens...this is where my vote is staying.

you ALWAYS kill scum when you got them.

lets say...
we are down to what 2v8 right now?
lets assume we kill town today and the vig also hits town tonight. 2v6
uh oh...but there wasnt a kill? Std comes out and says..I protected X (a scum buddy).
well I guess he and X are town then....Day 3 we kill ANOTHER town...2v5

now, who knows how many kills the vig has...but lets say he has another and kill TOWN AND scum again...doesnt have a kill...2v4 (Std again says he protected X)

that puts us at 2v4 (with Std and X looking town)....given some of the people in the town who are not following...or are just lose cannons...THAT is not a place I want to be. I mean, I wont be here, Scum will definitely kill me off before this point.

I get there are a lot of assumptions in the above scenario...BUT it could happen.

IF I WERE SCUM with StD, I would be an advocate for this route.

it IS RISKY...but they are already down one scum and people clearly think StD is scum...I would try that gambit.

i'd want to consider the options that are in front of us, cause there'll be new flips. however if StD said they protected anyone else that isn't our vig in that scenario i'd want him out.

and if the vig keeps living, that means we get more town-decided kills and the poe gets smaller and smaller. std even if things go perfectly for him will be in that poe, and so we'll have time to kill him.

it essentially works like this: we're putting a gun to StD's head right now, but letting him survive on the condition that our vig survives. the moment that vig dies, we shoot the gun. or, the moment his flip helps solve the game/PoE issues, we shoot the gun.

We could always leave it ambiguous? If StD is lying about doctor and scum kill is mandatory (@mod is this the case or not?), scum will have to try and sink a kill tonight to give StD's claim legitimacy, and thus will have to try and follow Emperor's vig shot. Muddying the waters on who Emperor is shooting might help us out an StD lie.

This ^^, waiting means more vig shots and thus more town-decided kills, or it means StD's flip becomes p much confirmed scum. Those are both outcomes that are good for town. I don't get why people are so desperate to push this kill through when it's clear to me that leaving StD alive for just one more day has the potential to give us an even stronger game state.
