Don't suck. But for srs, I know nothing about WoW anymore since Cataclysm apparently changed everything.Sudo_Nym wrote:So I'm a complete newbie who's just downloading the trial now. I wouldn't be adverse to accepting help and advice for these however long it is.

Step 1, make a Horde character (preferably on my server). Alliance is for noobs.Sudo_Nym wrote:So I'm a complete newbie who's just downloading the trial now. I wouldn't be adverse to accepting help and advice for these however long it is.
Okay, serious step one: loot everything, sell it. Kill everything in your path at the beginning of the game. WoW has a questhelper thing built into it now, so if you go to your map you'll see exactly where you need to go for each quest. Do quests in bulk - accept all the ones you see in an area, then go out and do them ALL, then come back and turn them back in.
Once you hit level 15, start using the dungeon finder while you quest. You can queue for a dungeon and while you wait to get into one, do quests/kill shit. It's the quickest way to level.
Another big tip: know what stats are important for your class. If you're a rogue wearing gear with intellect and spirit, you're doing it VERY VERY WRONG.
Not a must-do, but a bit of advice... create a damage-dealing class for your first character instead of a tank or healer. MOST classes are DPS or have the capability to deal damage pretty well, but you have to be careful with which spec you choose. Ask for advice here after you pick your class and have hit level 10.
Do you want to be up-close-and-personal with melee type combat? Do you want to do ranged damage? Do you want a minion/pet who does most of the damage for you?green shirt thursdays-

Out of curiosity, what's the subscription cost? I forgot to look that up, and I can't find it on Blizzard's site.
I really don't have a preference for a class right off, as I don't have much experience. I usually play fighters types in RPGs, though. One time, back in 'nam, Sudo was set upon by an entire squadron of charlies. He challenged them all to a game of Pictionary, which he won resoundingly. The charlies were forced to not only surrender the skirmish, but also their world-famous chili recipe, which Sudo sold to Texas for a hefty profit. Sudo is a master of diplomacy.-

In addition to what Reck said:
Always log out in an inn or a major city, no exceptions. The cost is 15/month, plus any random free time you might get for scheduled downtime (which is basically never now). Give different classes a shot during your decision making, feel free to start another character if you get bored during leveling. All the classes have a leveling talent build, so it really doesn't matter much.
Oh, and minimize downtime. The less time you spend regaining health/mana, the more time you have for gaining experience. This doesn't really come into play until later in the leveling process, you can't avoid eating/drinking in the single digit levels.Defined by who I dislike, not who I like~-

Logging out in an inn/major cities gives you rested (2x) experience while you're logged out. It helps a lot with leveling.
As for class suggestions: Warrior, Rogue, and Druid are all up-in-your-face fighting types. Warrior is...well, warrior. Druid has the ability to shapeshift into different forms (feral cat/panther form for quick damage, feral bear form for tanking/withstanding a lot of damage). Rogue has the ability to creep up behind people and deal quick, fast damage. Also, rogues are the only class that can dual-wield from the start.green shirt thursdays-

And once you make it to a city, buy whatever bags you can afford on the auction house. Nothing is more annoying than being in the middle of a bunch of quests and running out of space to pick up loot.xRECKONERx wrote:Okay, serious step one: loot everything, sell it. Really? I think I had one as a random drop, but I don't think I've got any from quests this time round, and I only started four weeks ago. Must've missed them.
Netherweave are about 15g on my server, but a 8 or 10 or 12 slot is still useful and affordable in early levels, if you have bag spaces available. And you can buy a 16-slot bag now for 1g from the quartermaster in each major city (1 per char) if you have revered rep or above with that city's faction. The reputation is easy to gain by running a couple of dungeons whilst wearing that faction's tabard (also bought from the quartermaster).
I have heaps of cash now anyway, because I took blacksmithing and can craft rods for enchanters, which sell for 10g - 40g on my server. It's criminal.Last edited by Fenchurch on Sun Jan 02, 2011 2:52 am, edited 2 times in total.-

My advice is this. Play on your own, not next to a friend. Pick a race/class who's story you enjoy or which would play the way you want to. If you don't want to read the lore, at least read this. Then I'd recommend going slow. Read the quest text, and look around the world. My biggest regret was that my first time was a race to 60.
When Catacalysm came out I took the time on my next one. I talked to NPCs, listened to stories, and read quest text. I loved it so much more. If you have a friend, talk to him, or play alongside them, but only if you can still move at your own pace.
I disagree with Reck's advice to create a DPS class as your first. I honestly believe that you can play anything so long as you enjoy it. Healing and tanking at lower levels isn't hard, and with Dual Talent Specialisation (which you'll understand when you come across it at level 30) it's very easy for a DPS class to also heal, or also tank.
My biggest sadness for you is that people are so intent on rushing through content now that you may lose a lot of certain instances. When you can, draw from the stories within it, and if your group rushes too fast that you want more, look it up on WoWwiki.com.
But play the game as you enjoy it, it's built for that. It's unfortunate that good oral sex excuses bad chemistry. - Korts-

There's nothing to gain from raiding, if you ever get to that level. Nothing. Except to do it once.
It's just a really boring grind once you know the story, complete with people yelling at you for four hours straight.-

That was definitely an objective assessment and not a bitter personal anecdote.DemonHybrid wrote:There's nothing to gain from raiding, if you ever get to that level. Nothing. Except to do it once.

Tell me what there is to gain, lorewise, from raiding 2-3 times a week 3-4 hours per raid.Nightson wrote:

"Gear" and "teamwork" both don't count, because gear doesn't really enhance the enjoyment of the game and the amount of stress outweighs the teamwork and good times.-

God forbid people enjoy the challenge of it all. If we go by that logic then there is no gain to hitting the level cap, and no gain in pvp, no gain to playing an alt, etc. You play the game for fun, and if endgame progression meets your fun expectations, that's what one would do...

DemonHybrid, your experience is nottheexperience. I enjoyed raiding immensely Vanilla WoW raiding with <Centrelink> was one of the greatest times I've ever had. Teamwork, new content, success, community. Our first run into MC we started drinking on Vent and laughing at each other, and ended up doing pretty well for a first run. If you're being yelled at, then you need a better guild, or a better group.
We weren't the most leet, but we enjoyed ourselves and achieved as a team. In terms of Lore, there isn't much, but that is why RPers rarely become the primary raiding members (not that they haven't). In terms of completionism, or the sense of achievement in taking your friends into something difficult and beating it, and downing one of the "baddies" of a universe. I did not enjoy having bosses on "farm" nearly as much as I enjoyed the first time, but that doesn't mean I hated it.
Just saying that your experience is not the only one, but it is avoidable, and if you got locked into it, then that was a choice you made. It's unfortunate that good oral sex excuses bad chemistry. - Korts-

I suppose so. What Oman said.
I mean, not all raid experiences suck, but there's a lot of drama even if you do an okay job most of the time, just be careful with it.-

So, it turns out using Stealth so I can backstab stuff is all sorts of fun. What does that say about me as a person, though?
I appreciate a lot of the feedback, but it seems to be higher level stuff; as a man with a 9th level rogue, I'm more about the here and now, at the moment. Right now, I'm mostly concerned about how I should be leveling up my character, since I'll be entering the world of talents soon. Also, I took Skinning and Leatherworking as my professions, so comments about that would be helpful.

RE: Skinning and Leatherworking, I'd just say don't buy anything on the auction house if you don't have to. The prices are inflated for people with level 85 sugar-daddies more than for the lowbies just leveling in.
The best leveling talent ideas that I've seen. The biggest thing about talents is to choose the line that gives you the best specialisation (both the special attack, and the boosts to stats and damage). It's unfortunate that good oral sex excuses bad chemistry. - Korts-
