At the very beginning of this brutal conflict, a battle-scarred, formidable alien sped out to the middle of the battlefield and challenged all comers. Although some were distracted by other, minor skirmishes, most of the lanterns in the area accepted his challenge. And while he was able to wound a few, he was soon overwhelmed by sheer numbers. For this impressive red-clad being, the fight was over almost before it began.

The hazy morning sunshine filters through the foggy expanse covering the city, and though the birds chirp in their respective trees, all is not right in the world. For last night, evil struck, and lives were lost. If one were to read the obituaries (a dull and depressing task, but some exist who derive some brand of fulfillment from it), one might read the following:

She never saw it coming. One moment everything was going just fine, and she was strolling down the sidewalk on the way to meet with her new boss. And then the next moment, there was a large-caliber "bullet" in her head, made of pure energy. She pitched over to the right and hit a wall, bouncing off and landing lifelessly on the sidewalk, nearly rolling into the gutter. As onlookers gathered, the girl's soul was already gone from her conscious mind. Her attacker was only visible for a split second, but then faded back into the shadows. If only she'd been wearing her helmet. She had never stopped beforehand to think about something like this happening; and now, after the fact, it was a sad impossibility for her to do so.

On the way to recruit someone, she heard a noise. She stopped for a moment and listened. After a few tense seconds, she continued on, for this mission must be accomplished in due haste if it is to be completed by morning! She was there to talk someone else into joining the Star Sapphire Corps. But just as she rapped her knuckles softly on the glass of her potential recruit's bedroom window, she felt a hand clamp over her mouth. She tried to scream, but it was utterly futile. She heard a voice whisper in her ear, "Not so smart now...

As she struggled for breath to scream for help, she felt freshly oxygenated blood choke up from her throat, and as she expired, bright red spattered the ground around her. She slid to the pavement, clutching her neck. By now her attacker was long gone.

Depending on one's outlook on life (or, in this case, the inconvenient lack thereof), one might either tremble in fear, or strengthen in resolve. And within each of the somber readers, they all determined in themselves which it would be. Meanwhile, on the other side of the psychological universe, the ones who had perpetrated these crimes raised their glasses to each other, laughing maniacally and planning their next strike. But time grew short, and as the sun rose, each went back into hiding as a normal citizen.

Unreportedly, a third body was found, and its remains were so badly mutilated and burned that no scraps of colored clothing could be found. The devastation went through and through, and those who saw the "body" turned away out of revulsion. The only identifying element of the body was the hands, which were covered in blood. You believe it to be the blood of another being. Surely this was no innocent person.
