I have had people tell me to dps before as a warrior though - the warriortankitis as you so put it dissipated an expansion or two ago

For reference, I have tanked and only tanked from Day one of my play on vanilla WoW. There was a spell of DPSing of about a week, but it was so tedious and unfun that it doesn't count.
So onto my points: Prot warriors are great, they're a lot of fun, but they are no longer the primary tank of choice. Thanks to Blizzard fixing pallys (and then over-fixing them) Paladin tanks (tankadin, if you will) are so excellent that they're become primary. Then Blood DKs became awesome, so now it's leveling off. All of the tanks bring different things now, and it's very very rare to see "Lawl, warrior DPS. Learn to roll a rogue" as you used to. Nowadays fury warriors can do hefty DPS, and it's often the Retribution (DPS) paladins - "retadins" - that get laughed at.
Warriors are a blast, I'd recommend them. Not to mention they really do cover the whole "valiant hero" feeling. Nothing beats the feeling of being smashed by a boss and watching your health bar rise with the heals. For someone like me, it's a great feeling, the protector and all that.
More than just damage, look at utility too. Hunters have the ability to trap. As a tank, I find that invaluable. Silencing shot rocks too. Utility is greater than DPS for almost all fights.
