I'll be off-line 28 Dec until 1 Jan. I expect not much action on this board during that time anyway....

I wont be here much during the vacation. But I will try and make it in on Thursday. After that...extremely sporadic

Take care!

I will be at Boy Scout camp from 12/26 through 12/31. No access then, and limited access 12/24 to 1/5.

I will be teaching (counseling) the dentistry merit badge, if anyone is interested. Of course, getting boys to sign up for that one is like pulling teeth.

Leaving for tomorrow for home. Though I'll remain active in all my games, I just won't be my usual self. :(

My participation will be down over Christmas, I'll probably only get online maybe once every other day for the next week or so. Don't replace me in any of the games I'm in, I'll be back.

Did you see that story yesterday about some scout who got killed lighting a mis-taken-care-of cannon at scout camp last week? I briefly worried it was you.

Cam- I missed that story. I would have been listed as a late leader, but I usually try to stand clear when teenagers are messing with gunpowder.

Access time will be limited during "oud en nieuw", mostly because of a huge party :D, and corresponding huge hangover :(.

Note: I'm too lazy to look up the english translation of "oud en nieuw" , but I guess you can figure it out. (it has something to do with a new year....)

Nope, the translation of that would be "oudejaarsavond" ;).

I guess there is no real translation for "oud en nieuw". It basically is a combination of new year's eve and new years day.

~~ picks up dictionary ~~

If you take it literally you're right, but the usual meaning of "oud en nieuw" is the evening of the 31st. Meaning new year's eve. :P

What is "oliebol" in english :D.

Since I like to be right, I'd say "oliebol" translated into english is "oilsphere".

For those who are wondering, it's something the Dutch eat around "oud en nieuw". Here's more info (you should try them, Sugar ;)):
Dutch Apple and Raisin Oilballs - Oliebollen met Appel en Rozijnen
Raisins
Apples
Egg
Flour
Milk
Salt
Butter
Yeast
Sugar
Vegetable oil

Take 0.45 liter milk and mix as much as necessary through 500 g flour, binding the flour into a dough while making sure it doesn't go lumpy. Mix one egg, 10 g salt and 35 g soft butter into the dough. Heat the rest of the milk until barely warm. Mix 30 g yeast and 30 g sugar into this milk, then mix with the dough. Wash 100 g raisins; core and finely grate two apple; and mix into the dough. Let the dough sit covered for one hour in a warm place, giving it time to rise well. Meanwhile, heat vegetable oil in a large pan. Roll the dough into little balls and drop into the oil, immersing completely. Leave for 5-7 minutes until the outside turns golden. The oil needs to be hot; the heat expands the carbon dioxide given off by the yeast, leaving the balls light inside but crisp on the outside. Don't drop all the balls into the oil together: make them in batches. Eat covered with powdered sugar, preferably while still warm.

In the way they form their words, the Dutch are not a poetic race: oliebollen simply means "oil balls". (I was charmed however, reading an oliebol recipe, to discover that the Dutch for apple core is "clock house".) But despite the unpromising translation, oliebollen are delicious, and oliebollen vans are as common in the Netherlands as kebab vans in Oxford. The basic recipe omits the fruit; other variations add custard, cream, or fruit jam. This version was sent to me by Hans van Oostrom of Gainsville some years ago, when I needed oliebollen for a party; I've adapted it to use the apples which are sure to be around in the autumn.
