The books are awesome, definatly.
But, yeah, the television adaptation is better then I expected. The acting was really good, as was the choice of who to play what character. There just aren't that many television shows or movies where you see people able to convincingly play a "flawed hero" in the old Shakespearean sense, and that's pretty much every character in the books; and yet the actors generally managed to really sell the story.I want us to win just for Yos' inevitable rant alone. -CrashTextDummie-

Yeah, I was very impressed with a lot of the casting actually. Cersei for example felt much more sympathetic in the tv show, than the novel.Mafiascum Fantasy Camp 2 - Day 7 ongoing-

Oh, I always thought Cersei was a sympathetic character. She has always tried to to the right thing, to be a "good girl" in the way her society has taught her to be. She's not a bad person at all, she's just a person who would have been the hero if she lived in a different kind of novel.
In fact, you could say that about most of the characters in the book.
Symbolically, it's probably a really bad sign thatshe lost her wolf, though. But even with that, I don't think that any of the Starks are bad people.I want us to win just for Yos' inevitable rant alone. -CrashTextDummie-

I knew about it; I just didn't care for it. Not enough to get past a few chapters in at least.
But the show is A++.-

I think this is partly because show!Catelyn is kinda annoying, so her rival!foil looks better by comparison. I hear she's less annoying in the books.-

(sigh) Yeah, my bad.
Yeah, I can see what you mean about Cersei seeming somewhat more sympathtic in the show. The actress really portrayed the relationship between her and Robert well.
That whole conversation they had together, where they make the (very prophetic, actually) comment that the only thing that was holding the whole relm together was their marriage was really pretty powerful. I mean, she's evil as hell, and probably always was, but still, you get a glimmer that things could have been different.I want us to win just for Yos' inevitable rant alone. -CrashTextDummie-

Yeah, you know its a good series when if the series had started from another point of view (lannisters, or others) you would have been much more attached to them.
I loved the TV show, its basically the only thing I watch on tv if I have a chance (daily show exempt). The characters are done very well, as is the scenery, which I love in fantasy movies/tv. It reminds me of Lord of the rings, with that indescribe-able 'epic' feeling.-

Really? Gosh. She must be a pretty annoying character in the novel. O_O
My friends who like the book series say that her portrayal is their least favorite, though they don't have particularly negative feelings about anyone.-

Just finished A Clash of Kings and will get my hands on a copy of A Storm of Swords soon.
Love it.

I knew about the books but hadn't read them yet (most of my family loves fantasy). Game of Thrones, in my opinion, proves that fantasy adaptations work better as series than as movies. Lord of the Rings was cool and all, but this series just works wonders. The characters are all pretty much spot on and deliciously morally grey. I especially like Littlefinger and Varys.ShowFinished: 159 (120 Town, 33 Mafia, 5 Other, 1 Cult, 4 Cultivated)

TSQ does not like gratuitous boobies and blood apparently.
Not being a fantasy hipstar, I picked up the books because I find the television series enthralling. I am on Clash of Kings now.I believe the loss of the wolf means Sansa is never going to rejoin the rest of the Starks, such as they are.but I love you still

I ignore GD and then I miss shit like this.
This is the series that brought Faraday and I together so of course it must be awesome!
The TV series also omitted my favourite dialogue in the series, so reading the first book is essential. Also, the ages of the children differ dramatically, because I suppose it's okay to have a 14 year old girl raped in text, but less cool to show it on prime time.
As for the separateness of the stories, there are actual interactions, even in the first book. There's a lot of discussion, some people try to leave where they are to go other places due to what they've heard, other people send assassins, etc.
Although at this point I've been waiting 7 odd years to find out what's happening to Dany and Tyrion, so GAH! Bring on next week! My kindle is primed to download it as soon as it's available.-

I didn't like Catelyn in the books, I find it hard to say why, but she's pretty annoying. Herdislikehatred of Jon and her bouts between hysteria and strength are probably key components though.
I hate Sansa in both adaptations, which means that actress is doing her job. I don't care about her upbringing or her contexts, she deserves everything she gets and there's a hell of a lot of blood on her hands.
I think the reason why Cersei is more sympathetic in TV show is that we get to see her on her own, or at least through a neutral observer (the camera). The books are all told through POV, so all the information you are given is tainted truth. I used to hate Jamie (although he was still cool) but then I learned about his POV. In Feast you read as Cersei and you get a little bit more sympathy for her (although not much). I think POV is used amazingly to this effect. There are limited 'Evil' characters, they're all just horribly flawed, some more than others.
Then there are other characters who you gain less sympathy for through their POV chapters. Theon, I'm looking in your direction, you asshat.Last edited by Seacore on Mon Jul 04, 2011 6:45 pm, edited 1 time in total.-

When is the next new large theme Game of Thrones coming? I read those games, they were awesome!
Faraday and I are going to read Dance first, given that the book is set simultaneously to Feast, and then we'll work out what we're going to do.
So one head of Eddard Stark will start planning the next game the day after the book comes out and the head who has a 38week pregnant wife will probably join the planning some time after that.-

I think the Sansa actress is pretty awful. Her only facial expression is "pout," and it's always obvious when they have to edit her correcting her lines into all of her scenes.
Arya's actress is AWEEEEEEEESOME even though she's like 10. Helps that the character is A++, though. She also reminds me of my little cousin.-

Yeah, I'm debating either savoring the book for weeks or just blowing it apart in days. It's going to be a weird experience.
Hey no rush on the game. Its always best done slowly and methodically. If you need help creating it as well, I'd be happy to help. Aussies stick together!

Arya is awesome as well. My favorite character from the TV series, by far. I like her storyline a lot.-
