"Hello my friend. Hope things are going well for you ..." he says with a hint of laughter in his voice.
You quickly realize that this is the infamous CR you have been hunting all along. And even though he left it unsaid - that fact that he's approached you means you have two choices before you; You can either try and make a run for it - but you have a feeling you won't get far; Or you may choose to head what this heathen says. After all, the Seven seem to be powerless these days. Maybe it is time for a new god! Whatever your decision, you knew you had to make it fast..

Hinduragi refuses
Espeonage PoV wrote:You wait for your target a long time. You aren't too worried as your know he will pass through this alley on his way home. After what seems like hours, he enters the narrow passageway ..
You step out of the shadows and announce - "Hello my friend. Hope things are going well for you ..." you say with a hint of laughter in your voice. You watch his reactions as he quickly realizes what is happening. It is left unsaid but the he knows you're the CR he has been hunting all along and that he now has two choices - either trying to make a run for it or joining you.
You know his decision before he even takes the first step. You quickly slit his throat as he is turning to run. He falls with a scream and the blood gushes out. You look at him sadly and realize that he was never meant to know the glory of R'hllor. Suddenly you hear footsteps and flee the scene ..
Mafia - Thor - kills <Hinduragi>
Thor PoV wrote:You spend the better part of the evening standing close to your target and watching him. Most of the time is spent in discussing who the infernal heathen supporting the Lord of the Light were. You laugh at this pathetic attempt at a guise from Hinduragi, since he was the CR and all this discussion was his way of muddying the waters.
When the darkness sets in and the city watch starting lighting the fires, he sets off. You follow him and make sure you have your knife by your side. He seems to be in a hurry and rapidly moves along the various alley ways. Your curse as this was never your favorite part of town. Suddenly you realize you've lost him!
You spend the better part of two minutes retracing other branches - until you hear a scream from your left. You reach the body just in time to see someone fleeing into the shadows. And looking down at Hinduragi at that moment, you realize that he was not the CR. He was a heathen who worshiped the Seven gods. You hear other people arriving behind you due to the scream. You decide that staying here would only implicate you and flee the scene...

Espeonage - <recruits> - Thor (He said it was a toss up between Magua and Thor)
Mafia - Thor - kills <Espeonage>
Espeonage PoV wrote:You decide that you will recruit Thor this night. You start from the temple & quickly walk towards that part of town. It's quite a distance away and you nearly do not take notice of someone else that is walking towards you. You look up and you see Thor right in front of you!
He looks equally startled. You start to think of the words to say when you suddenly glimpse a flash of steal. He pins you down and you struggle to keep him off you. Your quickly fumble for the pendant you wear across your neck; It glows a bright red and that blinds him for a second. It gives you a vital second in which you make a run for it…
After running for sometime, you realize that he is no longer following you. You look at the shattered pendant in your hand and know that while R'hllor protected you tonight, you may not be so lucky in the future ….
Your recruit fails.
You lose your bulletproof protection.
Thor PoV wrote:You and your comrade decide that you will kill Espeonage tonight. You start from the Godswood & quickly walk towards that part of town. He looks equally startled. He starts to say something when your instincts take over - you quickly take out your dagger and pin him down. He struggles to keep you off him - but you know that your strength is no match for his - it is just a matter of time before you overpower him. Suddenly, there is a bright flash and you are blinded. By the time you open your eyes, you notice that he is gone. You curse yourself for letting him distract you and escape.
You vow that he won't escape so easily next time ...

Setup
The major inspiration for this setup came from the discussion after Blackest Night Mafia. The objective was to make a balanced cult game. Some parts of the setup were decided at the very beginning:
- The cult has to be announced beforehand
- There has to be another faction so that the game doesn't stop even if CR is lynched D1
- Cult needed to have daytalk (Given starbuck's problems with being recruited in Walking Dead and not being able to talk to the CR)
The recruitment-mechanic inspiration came when considering what I call the "Andrius" problem. A pro-town person does everything in his power to lynch Mafia and cult and yet, is recruited and now has a different wincon. This can be pretty annoying (and not to mention, IMO, the major cause for recruits turning on CRs).
- So there had to be a buy-in for recruitment i.e You become a recruit only if you want to
- There also had to be a trade off for someone who chooses not to join i.e death
So the entire game revolves around this. The flavor inspiration only came after this since the religious faiths of "A Song of Ice & Fire" lent itself well to this. The game is a literal test of faith for townies when chosen for recruitment - "Do you believe town can win or are you better off joining the other team".
The rest of the roles was more intuitive.
- Mafia got a Watcher which could help them catch the CR. (Initially Mafia were powerless but this was suggested by reviewers). Their kill vs the CR's bulletproof also acted as a pseudo-investigate.
- CR's "Recruit failed" option acted as Mafia & PR indentifier. CR was nearly unchanged from the first draft where he got the 1-shot DK, 1-shot BP. Only thing which changed in review was him being given a full NK instead of one-shot so that he can play it like a SK if needed. (in situations where nobody joins him)
- Town had a Cult Cop specifically for CR-hunting
- Vig, Tracker & JK were duel purpose (i.e both Mafia and Cult).
The only point-of-debate seems to be the daykill power of the CR. A public daykill ability was given to balance the following:
- Delayed recruit start: He had to dodge four shots before even his first recruit opportunity (2 lynches, 1 Mafia kill, 1 cult Investigation)
- Half the game (8/19) was unrecruitable
- N2, had the Tracker, Watcher & cult-cop to deal with again
Two of the ideas which didn't make the cult:
- The "Embodiment of the Maiden" actually being a cult mason group. i.e "Confirmed not be cult and unrecruitable" to each other. One would be Mafia (a fakeclaim) and one would be town.
- The "Embodiment of the Maiden" being backup-neighbour pair. The Mafia-head would get One-shot Cult cop and One-shot JK when the town PRs died and the the town-head would get One-shot Vig and One-shot tracker.
In hindsight, I think it turned out well. All three factions had a chance going into the last day.
But I would like your thoughts on this though. Things you would have tweaked\changed?
Play
I don't I have to tell the town what they already know. I thought the hasdgfas & Benmage lynches were bad in particular because everyone thought they couldn't be CRs. The silver lining in the town play were some excellent night choices. I think BB blocking the CR, the breadcrumbing of the track results, the clearing of two people as CRs made sure town still had a chance at the end.
P.S: @SK, Why didn't you claim the flavor as to why the Vig was delayed and fit with "Embodiment of the Smith"?
Cult's highpoints were
- Espeonage replacing Maemuki: It was incredible how he managed to make everyone think he was town within a couple of posts.
- AGM's recruitment + fakeclaim: I thought the "1-shot which refreshes if it hits cult" was a very good fakeclaim. At around D4 or so, it looked like cult were going to steamroll both the Mafia and the town.
I think cult was undone by the N4 & N5 choices.
- N4: LMP has dropped a lot of PR tells when SK was lynched
- N5: I think at this point Espeonage was fearing scum becoming too powerful and wanted to get a kill in. However, given that he had no recruits, I think killing instead of recruiting was sub-optimal. And why not kill Empking - who had claimed scum watcher in thread?
edit: Although it didn't really affect the game, I would like to have seen Espe using the psychological aspect of his flavor text more. (i.e everything between "Suddenly the figure starts speaking..." & "You quickly realize that you have two choices before you.." was based on what he wanted to tell the recruit.).
The Mafia played a excellent game overall. The play of all four, the timing of the claims & the Thor\SpyreX minibus interaction throughout the game was great. Was a bit surprised that they went PR hunting the first two nights instead of trying to shoot the CR from the get go, though.
Overall, I think the faction that played the best won.
P.S: I'm not sharing the scum & cult QTs. I leave it up to the members.Last edited by ooba on Sun Aug 21, 2011 2:01 am, edited 2 times in total.-

Bollocks.
Good game Spy and Thor. You had me utterly convinced. I genuinely would've lynched Magua tomorrow if we hadn't been endgamed.
Town: I apologise for being fucking terrible. I think I'm going to have to stop playing Large Themes for a while, because I get too overwhelmed and suck. Although, I was right when I got into the argument with Spyrex about me posting elsewhere and him being scummy for pointing it out . Nonetheless, I was unable to really get into it and go on the attack, which cost me any town points and stuff.
At least cult didn't win.Trans rights are human rights.-

Well hey look ... Vezok was scum and 66% of the remaining scum was on the early SaintK wagon .... just like I suggested.
Told You So!
Good game scum.
Good game ooba (as always)."I am a leaf on the wind ... watch how I soar!"
Pretty much Geriatric game restricted at this point ... unless there are players I REALLY want to play with.-

YOU COULD'VE CLAIMED LIKE THE EIGHTY THOUSAND TIMES YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO.
But, no.
Thor did a great job. I was thinking SpyreX could be scum or cult somewhere around D5 and that kept growing, but I kept slotting Thor into a townslot. That was a good job on their part.
Don't understand why they shot Espeonage the final Night instead of shooting anyone else and winning. Guess they were scared he was going to shoot them, going by SpyreX's posts.
I definitely don't begrudge mafia their win here. They did the best job of the factions.-

Was right on cult recruiter being able to kill or recruit.
Was right that LB was targetted N2.
Was wrong that the cult recruiter wouldn't be able to dayvig. =P
Didn't expect that recruitment could be refused. That seems like a *really* bad idea, balance-wise, as you're almost always better off rejecting recruitment. Yeah, Andrius problem, but that's part of being in a cult-game.-

Since I had seen someone "kill" when I came to kill Hinduragi we were convinced he was a regular SK with full kill power and recruitment protection.
So we thought we were heading into 2 cult/2 scum/1 SK lylo. If he didn't have kill protection we would then have won flat out, if he did have kill protection we figured (I figured) we could sweet talk him for the Kingmaker. Meanwhile, if he was NK immune and we killed cult then we would have been setting ourselves up for a lot of fail depending on his NKs - we really just wanted to know what we were dealing with...and were mostly frothing around in confused confusion at the time.
I'm at least happy I kept being weirded out because of all the town reads I was getting off you My Magua gut remains happy and accurate.
@Scum - I support release of our QT. (besides, it's mostly one post of me going 'coordinate for quickhammer?' and then three pages of SPyrex chanting how much I suck about once every five minutes till I showed up again-

Yeah, maybe just daytalk is the viable solution so people don't feel in the dark with their new evil buddies? When you join a cult game you're accepting that your wincon may change - any whining about that is sillysauce.-

Hey, if you refuse - you die as town meaning your wincon as town just got a bit harder. To put it into perspective .. I'll show you AGM's PoV ..
- Town Vig lynched Day 2
- Town Cult Cop lynched Day 3
- To top it off, two townies dead and the town JK was killed night 2.
- So that's 5 town dead, of which 3 are power-roles and no scum have been lynched as of now
- You know cult can recruit from N2 so you're mostly looking at 9-10 Town, 2 Cult, 3-4 Mafia. Even with perfect lynching from there it looks difficult with a cult around so you choose to join.-

Cult game..lol everyone was afraid of the boogyman! Scum did do a good job maintaining that fear for wayyy to long. Tsk tsk.
Why did Magua vote confirmed nonscum Espe and hand scum the win?
Why didn't Espe NK Empking the claimed scum watcher?
