irc/chat mafia
Has anyone played this before? If so, does it work? What is the effective maximum number of players? What roles work well, what roles don't work?
Thanks! Two smallish lynch mobs formed up, but, feeling rather apathetic about the whole thing, just went home. --SpicyJ, in Mafia4, on the Brunchma board-

Hy had one mafia bot set up.
The 5 player games were fun, especially when the mod did something insane like 5 insane cops or an all-insane town. It's not the same game as mafia, but it's also fun.

Hmmm, well, at brunchma we've started irc mafia games. The smallest it apparently works well with is about six players, only one mafia, no other special roles, and it is fun.
We like irc because we have our own server. And no, I'm not going to tell you where it is.
I'm just considering putting together a 15-person irc game with lotsa fun roles, and wanted to figure out 1. if it would work and 2. if anyone from here might be interested in playing.
That is all.Two smallish lynch mobs formed up, but, feeling rather apathetic about the whole thing, just went home. --SpicyJ, in Mafia4, on the Brunchma board-

I definitely like the idea.
I was going to say that I don't think it works with a cop, but that's probably because she came out and said I was mafia, and got my lynched. But I'm sure a cop can be good in a smallish mafia game, and the game seemed to work pretty well with nine people (two mafiosi, two masons, a cop, and possibly a protector), but not perfectly. We ended up with three mafia wins and one town win in the games I played, which seems to favour the mafia. Then again, it usually came about because of someone being more swayed by a mafioso's pleas than a fellow townsperson's, so maybe it was just skill or lack of it on the part of the players which made the mafia win so often.-

Why don't you wrap the I/O? It shouldn't be too hard to modularize it so that it will run on either IRC or AIM. I'm sure there are perl modules that will handle the IRC 'protocol' stuff for you also. You shouldn't trust the livelyhood of your program to that bulging mass of indecisive, unprofitable, gellatinous goo that is AOL/TimeWarner. :-)-

after playing irc mafia, i've come to the conclusion that it's too confusing...every two seconds, you have to vhange your nick name..which is fun at first, but then gets old, and stupid after a vew nights...
and i believe it was mole, who tried to kill me...that made me sad...well, not really...but oh so very hurt:p
besides the supposed to have died in the first night-thing, and the couldn't type fast to keep up with the nick name changes-thing, it was still, all in all confusing...
the one thingk that i really liked, though, was that the people who dies could write thier own death scene...i thought thst was lots of fun! maybe we could try to have a brunch-style game here...not on aim, but here in general...i'd like to participate where they can't reveal thier roles and the dead cna talk ...it's be a nice change of pace....sorry i got off topic...but i still think it would be fun.
