Actually, this design will have major issues with lighting in it's most compact state, so I might have to make it three layers per farm, but it will still be pretty effective.

My idea was to keep it in the same format it is now and have any redstone underground. Basically I wanted to do what chesskid has at his house and have sticky pistons under all the dirt blocks were melons/pumpkins might grow. Wire those all up to a button using underground wire, and hit the button to lift the dirt blocks up, destroying the grown stuff on top.

That's the simplest way, but I was thinking of a tower design that pushes all the slices to a single point. Most of us use melons for food, so I'm sure it would be a welcome addition.
If somebody is able to go to town so I can warp back I'll be happy to get some sandstone.

well saturation+hunger combined points the order for bestfood if I remember correctly is mushroomsoop, steak, then bread.
Yeah, but I never really take that into account. I mainly use melons because a single push of a button can get you 100 hunger points worth of food. Everything else takes several times longer, especially animals.

saturation is equal to hunger, and goes down at the same rate as hunger, but is emptied BEFORE hunger
