You can find strongholds with Eyes of Ender. But there's no reliable way of finding nether fortresses, which you need for Blaze rods.

1) How did it get in? We fenced it off.

2) Spawn is protected; only OPs/admins can place blocks there.

I might take up minecraft as a hobby over Uni holidays (4 months!!! I thought 6 weeks was great as a kid.). Is it worth it?

I like playing Sims 3, but the only part I like is designing and creating the buildings (and killing people in a variety of new ways), not the actual playing part. Will I get the same thing without the controlling people thing, from Minecraft?

what aren't we supposed to dig branch mines out? like straight out from the hole you started?

Yeah, but I was keeping them to five blocks long. That way the light from the tunnel is enough to stop mobs spawning. Also, you can mine an entire branch without moving like that.
