So, umm, I dream about Mafia sometimes. And a couple of nights ago, I dreamt that izakthegoomba had fakeclaimed the following role:

You are an

Observer

. At the start of the game, you are a hydra, and play in a single slot. At any point, you may start posting from your own accounts; at that point, you become two players and two slots, and can no longer use the hydra account (which will disappear from the game).

No win condition, obviously, because it's based on a fakeclaim rather than an actual role. And as usual in my Mafia dreams, the role name doesn't make any sense. The role itself is quite interesting, though.

In the dream, incidentally, nobody believed Izak because a) he had earlier claimed Cop, and b) we were playing in an Open. (The dream wasn't quite clear on whether the role existed in the Open setup or not, but it was clear that it didn't exist also combined with Cop.) Izak was at L-1, and I was off the wagon, and I was launching into a huge angry tirade about how the claim didn't make any sense at all and how I intended to hammer, when I woke up, so I didn't get to see how it ended. (All I remember about other people's reactions was that Hoopla thought the whole situation was hilarious, but she wasn't a player in the game; she may have been the mod.)

EDIT: Oh, and izak, if I ever have a followup dream and discover you actually weren't scum, I'll be furious.

You're forgetting that it doesn't work. People really don't look into stuff that hard. And if they do, they never draw a real conclusion and end up getting left behind as the bandwagon rolls on.

My personal theory is that you were caught anyway so you decided to go for the "too scummy to be scum" angle.

Actually, claiming a ridiculous and obviously impossible role when caught is up on the wiki as a gambit somewhere, so it can't be a completely unheard-of strategy.

Pretty cool...maybe a scum counterpart would be a role that fuses two players into a hydra...like CyberBob and UberNinja.

it was advertised as "experimental and it is my first time gming". (different site)

it was a fun game to gm what was interesting was how confident scum was at the outset and ruled the game until d4 where reasons for actions and posts deteriorated and scum fell apart. like one scum player voted for a dead player and some such shit.

what is the common accepted use of the term "bastard gming". I thought it meant anything deviating from the original game design but some people seem to push the definition further.

Bastard is essentially anytime the mod lies or does something really unpredictable. A role no one's ever heard of anything similar if the game isn't marked with strange roles could be considered bastard. I really only consider lies to be true bastard though while unpredictable is more fine to me. Cult and jester tend to fall in the unpredictable since it can really screw with how you need to be playing if you don't know they exist. Lynchers I think are just fine (although some hate it since it really comes down to luck in whether your target is easy or tough to lynch) and survivors are awful but not bastard.

Exception being anything notified beforehand is no longer considered bastard since it makes it expected. A semi-open game that says there is a cult isn't bastard (same with pretty much any role if you give advance warning).

Mechanics can also be bastard, but it usually applies to roles simply because roles are used more than mechanics in most games.

I heard of a series of games called "Mind Screw" where they were apparenty roles that relied on others, and just a whole bunch of other mayhem. I don't know if the players knew what coming the first game (check in the completed large them games) but they somewhat knew what to expect in the later games
