To mine obsidian you need a diamond pick (also in case you don't know yet, obsidian can be made when you put water over a lava source block (so not flowing but standing still basically). The only boss right now is the Enderdragon, but in 1.4 there will be a new boss mob called the Wither boss (or something like that).

I could not figure out how to generate obsidian. It just kept turning into stone

The dynamics of water and obsidian follow some rules:

Liquids, in Minecraft (lava and water) come as two kinds of blocks: Source blocks, and Flow blocks.

Source blocks are the ACTUAL lava/water blocks, the blocks that you can pick up and place with a bucket.
Flow blocks are the blocks that are generated by source blocks. You cannot pick up Flow blocks with a bucket.

When any water (source or flow) touches a lava SOURCE block, obsidian is generated.
When any water (source or flow) touches a lava FLOW block, stone or cobblestone is generated (depending on the position of the water and lava).

Note that whether water or lava is "moving" or not makes NO DIFFERENCE. Source blocks may appear moving under certain conditions.

I would only need about 10 or 12 ayers but of course I would need to set EVERYTHING up and get my own server. Just wondering if there is any intrest for this type of thing.

That's a lot of work. Like once I tried for giggles to make a sort of setup in Creative superflat and it's just crazy. But if that's your type of challenge, go for it!

My current challenge is building a new house! I spent so much time on it I now feel as though there are giant spiders on the roof of my real house. :/

Also, when a lava flow block falls on top of a water source block, the water is turned to stone.

And the two data values in the code for each block (8 and 9 for water, 10 and 11 for lava) don't correspond to whether the block is a source or not, they note whether the block should try to spread on a game tick. If it can't spread for a few ticks, it becomes "still" and won't try to flow until it's updated.

So, I just found out about a neat cool program for people who want to be spoiled a bit, but not too much: AMIDST

Amidst will generate a minecraft biome map from a seed or save game, so that you can see landmasses, biomes and villages without generating those chunks. It is very handy for exploration, so you don't get lost at sea lookign for a new landmass, or to find where is the nearest large desert. Worth checking out!

(PS: the biome generation varies widely between minecraft versions, but the landmass generation has stayed constant for a while -- biomes shown by amiss might be different from those in older chunks in our world, but the continents are quite accurate)

It's the first day of October, which means it's time for the announcement of:

THE FIRST ANNUAL MAFIASCUM MINECRAFT SERVER

PUMPKIN PALOOZA FESTIVAL AND CONTEST

Sponsored by Empress Chevre

The task is simple. Build a super-cool Halloween/autumn display! Whether you want to present a happy harvest hoohah, or a horrific haunted house, the choice is yours! Be festive! Be creative! Have fun!

Rules:

- You have almost all of October to build your display. You may place it wherever you wish, as long as it is fairly easy to access and doesn't encroach on someone else's space.
- When finished, PM me the coordinates and I will write them down for when I judge. Like I said above, the easier it is to get to, the easier it will be for me to judge. If you know my Minecraft play, I'm not very good at getting around.
- Starting on Monday the 29th, I will begin judging. I will judge on adherence to the theme of Halloween and fall and how you mix it with MafiaScum/Minecraft, creative use of supplies, and general aesthetic beauty. The three best displays will get prizes, as listed below:

First Place:

a Super Pumpkin Palooza Pack, filled with jack-o-lanterns, pumpkins, wheat, cookies, and (if released in time) pumpkin pie! Oh, and maybe a few diamonds Plus, a celebratory plaque to be placed in front of your abode.

Second Place:

a Pumpkin Palooza Pack, with some jack-o-lanterns, pumpkins, wheat, and maybe a pumpkin pie or two. Plus, a sign that says you got second place.

Third Place:

a few pumpkins and a jack-o-lantern, plus a sign that says you got third place.

A few tips and guidelines:

- Don't make it huge. from my really basic testing I did yesterday, you can only see about fifteen blocks wide, so I'm suggesting a 15x15x15 limit. Of course, you can build bigger, but I'd much prefer a display which I can get a view at least most of it without moving around too much.
- Design from all sides! In Minecraft, you have stuff approaching from you left and right, behind you and in front of you. Take into account all views. Of course, one side will probably be the prettiest, but that doesn't mean all the other sides have to be the ugliest.
