I don't like that starter kit. When you said starter kit I imagined maybe a tool or two and some food and really that's it. I think as it is you're giving people too much.-

It'd be optional, of course. The items we chose were meant to give people a little push in some of the more interesting Mods, but nothing that could be considered OP by any standards. But definitely, we'd like some input. Our idea was "starter kit for Vanilla Server = Vanilla stuff, starter kit for Modded Server = Modded Stuff".-

Vanilla - 1 Stone Sword, 1 Stone Pickaxe, 1 Stone Shovel, 1 Stone Axe, 8 Bread
Mystcraft - 1 Notebook (empty)
Thaumcraft3 - 2 Tables, 1 Scribing Tools
Twilight Forest - 6 Roses, 6 Flowers, 2 Water Buckets, 1 Diamond
at the very least I agree with this the rest idrc one way or the other.
the OP Starter kit will be a bit more advanced so the non-op starter kit is flexible.ShowReturning to modding after a nearly two year hiatus!

Part of the fun of Twilight forest was scrounging to build that first portal. When Klaz and I did it I had a single diamond so it was tense.-

We spent a couple of days in the overworld before Klaz suggested "hey lets Twilight". Then we realized Twilight was awesome and decided to move there.-

Like I said: it's optional. There will be an option to start playing without a starter kit.
But whatever, a twilight portal isn't expensive anyway. We can knock it off the list.(Mostly) on hiatus until further notice. Planet MafiaScum 2 will be modded by Inspi and JDGA - go check it out!-

Vanilla - 1 Stone Sword, 1 Stone Pickaxe, 1 Stone Shovel, 1 Stone Axe, 8 BreadAbsolutely.
CompactSolars - 1 LV Solar ArrayNope. This isn't early game stuff.
EnderStorage - Ender Chest (all white)Nope. This isn't early game stuff.
IC2 - 1 Treetap, 8 Sticky Resin, 1 CF Sprayer, 64 CF Pellets (seriously, you guys will not believe how much fun those are...)I don't know what these are, but I'm guessing you should only be giving the earliest item, meaning probably the treetap. Giving some of the product of that item takes out the work involved in using it and the part where people have to figure out the mod.
Iron Chests - 1 Diamond ChestThis is pushing it, in my opinion, but I would say this is fine.
Mystcraft - 1 Notebook (empty), 1 Descriptive Book (empty, unused)Definitely not. Mystcraft will lag the server to a degree because it creates new realms. If people want to use it, that should be encouraged because it's cool as shit, but you shouldn't do the grunt-work for them. You have to make it at least a LITTLE difficult to get into this mod so that everyone doesn't just run around creating realms and then quit the server, leaving us with lag.
OmniTools - 1 OmniWrench, 1 Forge Lexicon (both for convenience and satisfaction of OCD)Don't know enough about this mod to comment, but I would default to no.
Soul Shards - 1 Soul CageThis works.
Thaumcraft3 - 2 Tables, 1 Scribing ToolsYes, because of how easy these are to make and how it will encourage people to check out Thaumcraft. I would even add the first wand, probably.
Twilight Forest - 6 Roses, 6 Flowers, 2 Water Buckets, 1 DiamondAbsolutely ABSOLUTELY not. Seriously, what is this nonsense? You're GIVING people roses and flowers? They can go collect that shit themselves! We should make a solitary TF portal at spawn and then you can go find the materials if you want to build another. You should still have to work for stuff in the new server...
Bolded above are my thoughts on each component.

This does not address the concerns that starting with a starter kit causes problems by eliminating the early game. All this means is that the people who elect to actually play the game as intended will be left gathering stuff while watching others do really cool things. They'll always be a step behind.
Frankly, as it stands, I would not come over to the new server with this starter kit, most likely.-

I have no reason to. Too much leanring to play for 5 minutes.ShowI definitely did NOT just lose the game.

Rob, I completely agree with you on basically everything you said - in fact, I'd rather start with nothing. But I'm trying to strike a balance here - there's people who want to start withQuantumgear, for heaven's sake. What I'm suggesting is really very mild by comparison.(Mostly) on hiatus until further notice. Planet MafiaScum 2 will be modded by Inspi and JDGA - go check it out!-

To be fair we did OP the Solar Helmets...
I guess my Batbox days are over...
Starter kit should be some stone weapons and maybe a bit of food. I could be okay with like an Ironchest if we want to give people a taste of what the mods have to offer.-

I'm fine with starting with nothing. However,I want my thaumcraft stuff. There is no reason to hold that back to anyone who has completed it. The whole point in finding stuff and getting research is to learn about it. I already know everything about it, even the new research that was recently added. Klaz, Implosion, and I have already done all the work necessary. I honestly would be perfectly fine with just getting my wand of the thaumaturge and all my discoveries + a thaumonomicon. There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.

Do you have any idea how hard this would be to do? We'd need to creative in an infinite amount of every aspect needed for every research, and you'd have to get them again. There's no feasible way to "Creative In" specific discoveries or anything like that.
P-Edit: Sortof what izak said. It's still a matter of something that you gathered resources to be able to do/make. What's the difference?-

I do believe there is a way to edit the thaumcraft.cfg file to allow discoveries being spawned in. I'll check, but I'm almost positive I saw it.There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.

...and I should think you haven't completely finished it, so a Cheat Sheet is out of the question.
Also, the last time I actually tried to set that up so Maru could use a full Thaumo, it didn't work. It might be an SMP bug, but either way I'm all for redoing the Discoveries.
I'll be completely honest and say that I got all of my Thaumcraft Discoveries legitimately and I will do so again - the only things I spawned in were MASSIVE amounts of Warded Stone and a Nether Star. I believe Rob's issue with eliminating the early-game applies to all things early game, and Thaumcraft Discoveries are no different then the Machines you need to make to make the Materials you need to get to make the endgame stuff.
It's all a process, it's all work. There's no difference.
You guys have several options: hotbar (2-3 items), starter kit, or fresh.
There doesn't (IMO) need to be this much rehashing of the issue.-
